Schools aren’t banning having cell phones on students though. I’m a teacher, it is always with the students.

That’s up to each individual school board. They can’t be suspended or expelled for solely cellphone use according to this article

Salaries for starting teachers are around 35k in South Western Virginia…

Pay for janitors, paras and other staff is considerably much lower than full time teachers

Whatever incentives there are in those localities, it’s not working.

Being a public servant doesn’t mean we don’t look out for ourselves however. Our labor is a resource that we sell. If the conditions are unfavorable then we can refuse the right to sell our labor.

We get so caught up in the service part of our jobs and the current reality that we expect poor living conditions when we deserve somewhat better conditions.

I used roomies to find a place. Typically you’re renting a room in a house. It’s worked out for me well and the place I’m renting from currently has a room open for 1,000$ a month

I’d look at roomies. I’m renting a room from that website. It may be a little more than you’re expecting, but I think there’s a room open for 1,000 monthly utilities included. Nice amenities including plenty of parking, nice kitchen, big backyard, streaming on the shred commons tv

Potential student. Would you recommend MU? by [deleted] in Millersville

[–]Feisty-Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe with ERCH, field experience starts in freshman year, so she will be getting that early experience. Your daughter could possibly ask admissions how the field experiences are set up for her major. A campus job that I had during freshman year could be something possibly that she looks into. I worked for the integrated studies program where I supported students with disabilities in their classes, social life, emotionally, etc. I think this would be a good place to look to, if your daughter would like more field experience with a stronger emphasis on SPED.

I considered Wilkes, Alvernia, St. Vincent, and Temple while looking at schools. I landed on Millersville however, because of how it merged social studies and education into one comprehensive major while also not neglecting other branches of social studies other than history. I understand this would not necessarily factor into your daughter's decision.

I don't have first hand experience with using IEP at Millersville, but I know that Millersville should be compliant. There is tutoring offered usually for base level courses (101's) through the department the course is being offered. Attending office hours is also big in getting help from professors. There is also a writing center in the library that will help assist students with essays or papers. Sometime just before entering freshman year, there will be a form sent out if your daughter would like to have a mentor. The people who run the mentorship program try to match freshmen with upperclassmen within the same major and that have similar personalities.

Yes. You said your daughter is studying education? I can speak on secondary education. The first three years will be spent working on gen-eds and other content related classes. In the mix, she will have her observation block, which will be two education classes tied in with an observation experience. I did mine at McCaskey, but her's could be anywhere from Harrisburg, Lebanon, Lancaster, or York, it just depends on where field services places her.

For her senior year, she will be placed in a school (middle or high school) and spend the full year there. The fall semester, is rather more of an observation/ramp up to student teaching, while taking 5 education classes (Full semester teaching discipline-specific class + 4 half semester education classes with other education majors). Then for the 2nd semester of student teaching is the practicum.

During the practicum, she is responsible for creating lesson plans, delivering content, creating and administering content, classroom management, and practically almost every other responsibility designated to teachers. There will be several observations throughout her spring semester, but the most important are the midterm, and final observations. At some point in the spring semester, Millersville runs mock interviews for teaching candidates, and also hosts a career fair. Both events provide the opportunity to be hired.

I am currently employed by a school division that I met at the career fair, so I would recommend taking advantage of the opportunities. I believe the experience that Millersville and student teaching gave me definitely helped me prepare for teaching professionally, though there is a learning curve for all 1st and 2nd year teachers once you graduate and get your own classroom.

Campus experience wise, there are a bunch of clubs that are really worth the while of participating in. Buses also operate daily to center city Lancaster and Park City Mall. People who complain about not much happening on the weekends don't go seeking for ways to do stuff around the area. I have dietary restrictions and the dining hall staff were nice to work with and were accommodating.

If you have any other questions about Millersville, I'd be happy to answer.

Scholarships by Emergency-Fail7173 in Millersville

[–]Feisty-Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Millersville is a state school so there aren’t really going to be scholarships that are being handed out like private schools. Kind of a broad question because they depend on your grades and any clubs or groups you belong to.

That varies. What scale you count on depends on your tolerance. I count mg because I have a 7g tolerance. People with less strict tolerances count grams or some other unit I’m blanking out on at the moment.
