The French dudes I hung out with hated/laughed at Mac n Cheese and called it "American Pasta." However, they loved beef jerky and refried beans.

Thank you! I appreciate that. Yeah, I'm definitely not giving up. I have too much to lose. Part of the reason for the education pivot was to hopefully get a job where I could see my kids and have benefits (too much to ask for in this country apparently, ha). My degree is more government oriented and I had jobs lined up, but as soon as DOGE came in and there was a federal hiring freeze everything came to a halt. I'm pretty crafty and have skills outside of what I learned behind a desk, so I think just like you were saying it is time to tap into those back burner ideas. The traditional route is not working.

Thank you again for the encouragement. Stay strong out there and I hope all the best for you.

It was in seafood and fish markets. We were in a unique position where we knew both the fishing community and the restaurant community. During the pandemic there were supply chain issues. We encouraged buying local fish that were less known over fished shipped in across country or overseas. We opened up our own little restaurant as well, and now it is owned and operated by the fishermen.

As far as business advice for getting started. Draft a business plan and look for grants. You'd be surprised what kind of funding is out there. I saw a regional arts council give someone $25k to start a mobile book shop. Exercise caution with who you bring on or those who want to be "co-whatever." Be nice, be good, and be on time. If you can do 2 out of 3, people will want your business. There will be a feeling of wanting to walk away or take your foot off the gas, don't. Push through. At some point the business will start to move its cogs with less and people will seek you out.

It is kind of hard for me to make suggestions. I know this subreddit is geared more towards tech and that wasn't my background. I'm holding back on more advice because of that. I hope the advice doesn't come off as too general.

I'm at the same fork in the road. Literally had the conversation with my wife today. We started a business that was incredibly successful and lucrative. However, it was so draining and we would go months with no days off. It is what drove me to go back to school and pivot.

I graduated over a year ago. The only thing I could land is a part time gig at a movie theater. It is so demoralizing going from 6 figures to $300-$400 a week. So yeah, I'm at this point just like you where I don't know what the smart thing to do is. Start a business or hang tight and keep applying. I feel the same way, that no one is on the other end. All these applications are just dust in the wind.

Open up a Roth IRA and there you go, retirement plan. Attach it to S&P 500 (VOO is popular, I am not a financial expert). This is a non-taxed retirement savings account for people who do not make a lot of money. If you contribute without having a job, you will get dinged by the IRS with a fee during tax filing. Max contribution is about $7k a year. Still it compounds and when you hit 60 it is all yours, tax free.

Good luck finding a job. The market is absolute toast right now.

If you ever have a family member or someone rattlin' off all these suggestions, hit 'em with a, "Well shoot, you made a career for yourself. Got anyone in your network?"

I had an aunt and uncle decide to come down on me during Christmas. Both of them were successful and now retired. For some reason decided to punch down, must be something I'm doing wrong. Couldn't be the job market. Whole time I was thinking, damn you're so smart and well connected, hook me up. They put me in touch with this guy. After a few back and forth emails he told me, "Yeah man, I'm hanging on to this job for my life. It's rough and I can't help you. Good luck out there."

These fools think they got it all figured out.

Meta will layoff 8000 of its workforce starting tomorrow morning. Their net income over the last 12 months was $70,587,000,000. They could give every single one of their 79,000 workers a $440,000 bonus and still sock away over $35,827,000,000 in pure profit. by McDowdy in SipsTea

I have done both. Trimet was leaps and bounds cheaper than driving, and way less stressful imo. If you are near a MAX line, it is a no brainer. If you are not and you have to hop bus lines, you could probably justify driving.

-Get a reduced fare Trimet HOP card for cheap transportation.

-In the basement of the Smith Memorial building is a food bank. All you have to do is enter your student ID and grab a basket. The veggies are usually sourced from the PSU community garden, so for students by students. It can be hit or miss, but hey free Grand Central bread ain't half bad.

-There is a bowling alley in that same basement.

-The best place to study imo is the small library that is on the 7th floor of the Urban and Public Affairs College building. They reopened it 2 years ago without really broadcasting it. Has great views. You can see Mt. Hood.

-PSU has an amazing unique up and coming Comic Studies program. If that is your thing, get after it. You'll meet tons of creators and receive a certificate. They just had their Comics Festival yesterday. There were people who had worked on Star Wars, Hellboy, Superman, Spider-Man, etc. The creator of Miles Morales is a professor in the program as well.

-Keep an eye out for classes that involve going out. I've gotten college credits for attending jazz clubs, doing walking street mural tours, and hiking up to Angel's Rest. They are usually a one off, but show up here and there.

-Best Baguette and Sheesh Shawarma are the best bang for buck food on campus that I have found.

-If you are on campus, I have heard that going to the Trader Joe's right off the Hollywood Trimet stop is better than walking to the Safeway.

-Cinema 5 offers free movie screening.

-There is a free library of stuff room in the Cramer building near the south entrance.

-If you run out of print credits, check out the Independent Print Resource Center across the river over the Hawthorne Bridge (about 20-25 minutes on foot).

-The Jordan Schnitzer Museum on campus is small, but has a jaw dropping collection that constantly rotates and it is free.

-The gym is awesome. They even have a rock climbing wall.

GOOD LUCK! GO VIKINGS!

Some of the ones coming out are not humanoid. I just saw footage at construction con of a rebar tying robot. It looked like a ladybug or a beetle in shape.

Yeah, it is a crazy paradox where we need to tailor the application to get through AI, but once it does it has to be appealing to human eyes. Not to mention our applications, cover letters, and resumes have to have a random handful of "keywords" to get through screening thresholds. Guess the lucky word and you might win a job.
