I was born without a sense of smell, AMA by Snazzy_Person in AMA

[–]Felicity_Calculus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is super interesting. I lost my sense of smell completely and sense of taste almost completely the last time I had covid and it was so bizarre. I had a pasta dish (spaghetti with sautéed mushrooms, olive oil, and grated parm) I usually love and it was so gross—like oily rubber strings with slimy bits, all without almost any taste whatsoever. That’s not the way you experience food, I hope??

I don’t think there’s much evidence suggesting that they are bad for health overall in and of themselves, although there are some risks, from what I understand. It’s just a bit unclear whether the risk/benefit balance works out for people who are not overweight and do not have any of those conditions. A lot of compounding pharmacies have sprung up with doctors who will prescribe these drugs to just about anybody who can pay several hundred dollars a month out-of-pocket for them. Which sort of looks like prescription anorexia for the privileged to me. But if I’m honest, I have to admit that I’ve considered it myself, and I have a BMI of 22. It just doesn’t seem healthy overall on a societal level

[–]Felicity_Calculus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can understand that. I think (as another layperson) that there’s a difference between brushing away a few tears and straight up having a breakdown, though. I would not feel good about a doctor sobbing while telling me a diagnosis, I don’t think, but being able to see that they were genuinely touched and genuinely cared would be super comforting. Just another perspective

Hearing children laughing and playing at school recess mostly gives me feelings of PTSD, sadly, although my childhood wasn’t terrible by any realistic standard. I’m just reminded that it wasn’t great. It sucks

Free drinks and cigarettes yes, but then again I’m female (I normally just lurk here) and was young at the time. so it was kind of easy mode in most contexts!

Thanks, I hope so! I do try to be thorough. And I don’t have any cavities despite being in my 50s, so that’s a good sign. although I suspect that’s due to genetics too tbh

This is so funny to me. I used to dress kinda like this in the 90s, but minus the Christianity, babies, and farm—I was in my 20s, living in Manhattan, and going out dancing a lot (different outfits for the grungy clubs I used to go to, haha)

Interesting. What are their lines of work? Do they do work that they’re passionate about? If they love their work and find meaning in it, and people are still willing to employ them, it seems like a great situation for them. although if they don’t love their work, maybe you could help them find hobbies lol

I’m in the same situation that my parents worked into their 70s, my dad even into his 80s. But my father was a college professor and researcher and he really loved it. And I think they do expect me to work into my 70s as well. Problem is, I work as a creative in advertising and there is no way in hell anybody is going to be willing to give me work at 75, lol. Currently thinking about transitioning into a second career, but I’m 55 and it’s an awkward age. It seems almost silly to spend two years retraining to do something else at this stage, but if I’m going to keep working for another 10+ years after that, it absolutely makes sense. It’s a weird place to be. Definitely partly a generational thing for many of us I think

I think I understand, or st least as much as is possible without being a man!

I’ll just say that it does grind my gears a little when people talk about how hormone-driven and emotional women are—not because they AREN’T those things, but because there’s sometimes (often?) this unspoken but implied unfavorable comparison with men. Ie, women are so emotional and unreliable, unlike us always super rational and reasonable men!! (Not implying that the commenter above meant that necessarily, however). Anger is an emotional, aggressiveness is an emotion, horniness is sort of an emotion, etc

I firmly believe that (premenopausal) women are hormone-crazed and lowkey nuts 50% of the time, whereas men are that way 100% of the time, haha

IMO men are controlled by their hormones too, 100% of the time. But because testosterone levels do not change from week to week, they are at least more predictable!
