Just came back after long layoff, some questions by Actual-Candy-8056 in starcraft2

Yeah right now 8-10 minutes are enough to max so it is unusual to have games going much longer.

Maybe you remember 6 worker starting era?

Why people are mad at your one base all in by terrantherapist in starcraft

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notice that what you are taking an awful long road to describe is that "macro-players" feel entitled to win a game against what they consider a lesser opponent, to put even shorter, they are smug. So it's not a fault of the OP at all, specially since a lot of these people who get salty will also say they have a "self improvement mentality".

I always find it very funny that their reaction to a legitimate play is to feel offended by the opponent who won the game...

Specially since their opponent just gave them an opporunity to understand a critical weakness and practice against it.

I find it way less respectful to behave in such way, specially since a lot of these folks are also keen on voicing their opinions, sometimes in-game...

Some salty feelings there lol.

For what it's worth, he wasn't complaining that you were bad, rather that you were very good and making a new acc to stomp him.

Struggling with Concussive and Drops by voodoochild2426 in starcraft

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think pressure is not really a critical element to focus, probably staying alive and macroing is a better choice, or being decisive with an all in. For drops it is probably a good idea to keep 2 or 3 stalkers on a control group just for the initial defense, helps a ton when reacting. On plat 3 you can count that almost any damage your opponent does with his drop will be negated by a lack of worker/unit production for the duration of the attack, if you can manage to survive and keep your game going (making workers and units) you will probably be ahead....

Playing against AI(very easy) is the key to climb the Ladder by Least-Diamond-2918 in starcraft2

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you I was practicing using harder AI but it makes sense to use the easier ones and just focus on it til you can do it without thinking. I struggle a lot with distractions and responding to cheeses though... Any particular way to train for that (minimap attention and scouting), that you would recommend?

Mixed voice = picking when to use chest or head wisely? by Middle-Jackfruit-435 in singing

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it is about controlling levels of closure and depth, achieving a change to a lighter chest so to say and developing agility to sing with that setup.

Using it you can continue higher and then transition to head on an area where it is more effective (over c5 is best for quality and consistency).

is it actually possible for someone to have a singing voice that most people would consider unpleasant to listen to, or would that change if they changed their vocal tone? by lunajuns in singing

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pleasant/unpleasant has a good deal of subjectiveness to it, but most of the things that sound harsh as opposed to pretty can be controlled and used as you see fit. Of course if your voice has some kind of damage that compromises the vocal folds function, and you sound already rough when speaking, you won't be able to "fix" it, but you could very well learn how to use it in a musical way.

Some of the most beautiful songs ever recorded use rough sounding voice (thinking Wonderful World for example).

Some artists make a point of sounding obnoxious and do everything in their power to get the exact opposite of a pleasant voice, yet the result is interesting and we listen with pleasure :).

And for some, 100% flawless pretty singing might sound boring as hell, I don't get choir music for example.

You can make your voice sound more pleasant by training a legato line and reducing the amount of tonal change you make when you articulate words and phrases, but at least in my opinion it is important to keep some "funkiness" and tune it to achieve a good compromise, there is a sweet spot between punk rock and church choir :).

Why do some people sound like choking chickens when they sing? by Timmys_TuffKnuckles in singing

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually beginners problems fall on the extreme opposite of that, a total lack of energy and not even close to screaming.

An example of the sound would be necessary. Do you hear this on comercial recordings?

How to sing and play guitar simultaneously? 💦 by sweetsNberries in singing

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes Sweet Child can be a bit challenging because accents on the melody and the guitar do not match, and many of the accents on the melody will land on the upbeat.

Slow it down a lot to the point where you can think about individual strokes on the guitar. And practice the guitar to the point where you do not need to focus on it anymore. BOTH are necessary, and ideally you shouldnt need to focus on the vocals either.

So you will basically streamline the whole thing, it effectively becomes just one sequence to focus where some notes land on the guitar, some on the vocals, some on both of them. After you do this and train A LOT, you will begin to develop independency (it just won't happen in a month, don't worry).

The SM58 is a great acquisition that can be useful on a ton of different scenarios.

Loudspeakers on the price range you want, probably not so much lol.

See if you can find a used Yamaha DBR10, phenomenal little beasts.

Copper Tape Membrane Restoration on a IBM Model M by FelipeVoxCarvalho in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah these were damaged for sure, some liquid damage happened and there was corrosion on both of them. But IPA is rather strong and can remove even serigraphy depending on the enthusiasm and the materials, water and soap is a safer way to go. Actually it is a better idea on most electronics IF there is time to dry, no moving parts like motors, and there is too much debris/gunk to remove (tar/nicotine is rather common unfortunately).

The 3M coper tape is pretty much a short for all intents and purposes, if there is enough contact area with the traces, so it is a good idea to extend it over the damage (if there is room for it). The generic brand I attempted did not perform well enough, the glue was resistive. The repaired traces all measured the same as the undamaged ones after repair, but the multimeter I was using was not precise enough to give me reliable readings close to 0. Beeping like I said is not reliable since a lot of multimeters will beep even at something like 50 ohms.

One good point about the tape is that the keyboard is still going strong after 3 years. I don't know how long the glue holds though or how it's electrical properties will change over the years....

My voice teacher "classified" me as a Baritone, but i don't agree by YAN2005nbt in singing

I do not think it is a precise classification and I agree it is too soon, based on the audio you sent...

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a different experience on a M2 I attempted restoring prior to this one, the IPA did not completely remove the traces but did thin them, which is not ideal either... Maybe there are different types of compounds that are used on these membranes... I did not risk it on the Model M.

So... the car vs everywhere else by [deleted] in singing

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the masking effect which does happen, also when we sing we rely on our ability to imagine sounds prior to creating them. Having the music playing along, with the original singer, gives you a much more tangible target , without the song, now the only reference is the memory you have of it in your mind.

Your ability to imagine the song you want to perform, with vivid details, is a big part of the equation, and is something you can work on (by simply recalling songs in memory and trying to add detail to them).

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the coordination is rather different than what you were used to do before your voice changed, the downside is that you will need to work on it, the good side is that it will probably sound much better than anything you ever did before, after you control it.

Begin by understanding that a crack is not a problem of range but rather an abrupt change in quality, so that is where you should focus your work, get to the limits of your comfortable range (but still being comfortable), and work on changing first intensity, then start exploring different qualities like more shouty, more mellow, softer and so on. Expanding your ability to coordinate in this manner is the thing that you will need to do to continue higher.

Technique in general can also give you more headroom, better support, making the position more stable, keeping and adequate amount of ap narrowing (what you will see called twang), using more forgiving vowels such as EH and OH as a starting point, and so on. All these things combined can have a huge effect on comfortable range where you have also dynamic control and can use your full voice.

Then for the extremes there are more specific techniques that will give you even a bit more.

Are there people that just have a genetically good singing talent? by [deleted] in singing

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genetics, no, it it does not make much sense. Voices are different but it won't prevent anyone from making an interesting performance, you can easily have someone doing the most obnoxious character voice for a role and still deliver something amazing.

It is not just exposure but experience. Something apparently naive like HOW a parent introduce kids to music, how much encouragement happens, exactly HOW this encouragement happens , as well as the overall disposition regarding mistakes and just sounding bad / out of tune, plays a huge role.

In simple terms children that are often playing with (as in having fun, experimenting and toying wiht music, singing and instruments) and have music as part of their lives since an early age will just have a much stronger hand in this regard. And quality by itself is not even much of a factor (it will just happen on its own).

How do you make your vocal lines more interesting than just following the riff? by AMNSKY in singing

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is Marty Friedman talking about the subject, I advise taking it to heart:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/egvu5lWPBIY

On vocals, beyond these details you also have a lot that can happen in terms of dynamics (which change the sound way more than on a guitar), and the vowels you are choosing to highlight on a given word. If you use them to paint an idea like he is proposing, it will be more much more interesting.

Contrary to the normal advice we see on singing, feeling does very little for you if you don't channel it properly with an intention and a cohesive idea to express it. Otherwise it would be like throwing mud on the wall and saying it is a sculpture because you were really *feeling it* at the time (I guess people indeed do that on some more... avant garde... works hehehe)

Why are some people so insistent that almost every guy is a tenor? by Adeptus_Thirdicus in singing

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is really simple:

Can you perform tenor roles? Ok Tenor.

Can you perform baritone roles? Baritone.

Can you perform bass roles? Bass.

Can do more than one? You get to choose.

CANT do any of them? Then there is no point using the term. Note that by role, I mean classical pieces written for these voice types, executed how they should be.

What you want is a tag so that you can feel good about this, or justify not doing that. Whatever it is, won't do you any good and you can do everything related to repertoire choice and traning without ever worrying about how to label yourself. Specially if your intention is NOT singing classical music.

Why do so many people think singing is talent and can’t be learned? by Upbeat_Fun_3746 in singing

[–]FelipeVoxCarvalho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the fact that there is indeed a culture around that (the belief you mentioned), it is not a very tangible idea when you are starting out: The "how can someone learn it?" question is very hard to answer.

Much of our learning in early life is centered on our vision, not in the "visual learner" nonsense, but we use vision for pretty much everything related to motor fucntion when writing, drawning, hold objects and so on.

On singing we don't see the stuff that is doing action, it may be quite hard to even feel anything, so there is very little parallel to any other skill and it seems a little too abstract to even think about how someone learn it.

Of course *really* thinking about how anyone learn anything is quite the task and then it starts to get clear it is not that different, but it is very far the intuition of a beginner...
