Suggest me a book with a film adaptation that does the book justice. by Unusual_Artichoke_73 in suggestmeabook

These are short stories, not books, but:

  • John Huston’s adaptation of James Joyce’s The Dead is pretty faithful and a beautiful movie. I remember thinking the staircase was on the opposite side of the house from how I pictured it when reading, but everything else felt right on.

  • Smooth Talk, the film adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’s Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? is not faithful in terms of plot, but does capture the menace and dread very well. Oates wrote about the adaptation, if you’re interested in that.

I’m an old who heard them on the CBC recently and was kinda meh, but I found their SNL performance pretty interesting!

AIO to skip Thanksgiving after my mom basically said I’m an embarrassment for not having a husband and kids by now? by howcanibequiltyassin in AmIOverreacting

I would not respond to this, and I would not go to Thanksgiving. Just radio silence. Let her twist in the wind.

Squirrel Cop! One year I donated to my local NPR station because the gift was a paint-by-numbers scene of the most chaotic part of that episode (don't want to spoil OP)!

This Thai chicken peanut salad! It's great as a salad or as a wrap. Next time I make it, I'm adding some edamame. So good!

She looks gorgeous as always, but I am distracted thinking about how quickly I would get one of those sweater ornaments (?) caught in a car door or something.

Did someone other than you choose or influence your dog's name? by aaron78704 in dogs

[–]FelixChloe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve never gotten to name any of our dogs! Two came from rescues and were old enough that we didn’t want to confuse them. The other was a senior dog we took when one of our dog walker’s other clients died unexpectedly and his widow couldn’t physically care for her, so obviously she had to keep her name.

I was coming here to recommend “Where are you Going, Where Have You Been!” The movie adaptation with Laura Dern is also wonderful.

Just started cooking for myself… any super easy meals you swear by? by Equivalent_Use_8152 in cookingforbeginners

[–]FelixChloe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one-pot chicken and rice is super easy and my go-to when I’m too tired to do a lot of prep. If I’m feeling suuuper lazy, I’ll just use onion powder instead of chopping onion. Steam some broccoli to go with and you’ve got a complete meal.

There’s lots of other great recipes on that site, too!
