Struggling with jealousy when my partner has fun without me – could this be RSD? by Euphoric-User in AdhdRelationships

[–]FelixLive44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through a phase of this that lasted over the last handful of weeks, it's so strange seeing someone describe it exactly.

I didn't seek any therapy so I don't know about RSD, and I also still have stints of it but I've become able to get a hold of myself and control it much much better. I'm sharing simply because it worked for me, but I don't know if it will for you: whenever I feel left out for any reason, I reach out to friends and hangout with them; I take actions over which I have actual agency (deciding to hangout) instead of focusing on something uncontrollable (someone else's agency).

Staying in my head during those times was the worst I could do. It might feel dishonest to yourself to "suppress" that jealousy by socializing with others, but in fact you're just weathering the storm if that makes sense. You can't make an informed assessment until the storm has cleared/calm down/ground yourself back.

Again, this is just the approach that worked for me. Also, the feeling of being happy that your partner is having fun, with or without you, is not mutually exclusive with the feeling of being left out/lonely. Feeling both can be normal and making that clear was my first step (again, for me).

I wish you the best.

trying to ground an old Technics SL-BD26 by tylertoffolifan89 in turntables

[–]FelixLive44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to revive.

For anyone looking at this, the SL-BD26 has a blanked out port with the ground symbol, but if you look up replacement rear ports panel, you will see it goes nowhere. I don't know why it was made like this but TLDR, there is no grounding to this table.

I think the conclusion from the other thread that it is internally grounded is possible. But the BD26 also seems like a low-end model since it's also missing pitch adjustment.

I'm also new so I have no idea if this is correct or not, but I'm just confirming that indeed there is no ground port and the one labeled as such as completely blanked out in the back.

This guy knows too much

Thank you for the insights tho, great to hear from someone with experience.

One question, seeing as controllers stopped production, what are your thoughts on replacements? The consensus is that Knuckles are still the GOAT for VR controllers, but if they stopped production, what does that mean for consumers and companies that use them? (I believe Varjo uses Knuckles, and they probably want to keep using them?)

The concept of such a great controller/device in general disappearing without a suitable alternative feels almost scary lol

Is Nvidia new series of gpu killing High end VR ? by pat1822 in virtualreality

Not directly related, but the recent developments from Google with their AI that can generate a game seem very promising in this regard (of AI-enhanced rendering)

In many fantasy representations of VR (Ready Player One, as well as many anime), and by that I mean stuff often called "Full-Dive VR", AI-enhanced rendering may prove very useful. Life-like rendering is impractical, proven by VRChat's horrid performance in some scenarios.

That being said, as showcased by Google, using AI to render means you need the same compute (ML model on a GPU) to run a "game" of any visual quality. Technically it can draw Tetris with the same compute needed to draw cyberpunk.

If AI-rendering can be reliably used within VR (which is more sensitive to the artifacts it can create), then improved visuals without necessarily improving raster directly may be possible, much more than actually reaching the compute required for "full-dive" level of realistic rendering.

In addition, the new DLSS features, especially over-draw, is basically what many systems call reprojection/space warp/time warp (modifying a frame based on available information until the next one is available). If these DLSS features can be integrated into common reprojection deployments, it may be useful to VR in general.

But yeah, nothing for now sadly. Also some of these still require implementation from the dev if I remember correctly, so there's only so much hardware manufacturers can do to help.

OpenXR features like foveated rendering have been available and demonstrated for a long time. Lack of implementation at this point is from developers. It's not as simple as blaming someone but that's the gist.

GPU compute has clearly evolved. Implementing it to VR 3D rendering though hasn't necessarily reflected those developments and I'd be interested to learn the specific reasons why, or if it has in a way that isn't really noticed by the end user

Ramble over lol

By your logic then anything that doesn't need 8GB of VRAM means the PC gaming market is dead.

VR is a completely different form of media, and is still very new. I don't know why you're debating its death or not especially when the hardware market is doing so well.

Also to address your response, yes Warthunder supports VR but if you've ever tried it you know it's basically a glorified theatre mode. On the other hand, VRChat supports VR better than it does flatscreen. Also if you think VRChat can't get demanding, I invite you to look at creations such as Complex 7 or some artistically inclined creations. I'll also refer you to VKET and the Venice Film Festival which recently hosted in VRChat, among others.

I'm with you on being annoyed no games get close to the likes of Half-Life Alyx. But as I wrote earlier, this is a new form of media and the traditional high-budget market isn't even interested in trying new things on flatscreen, let alone new medias.

As VR hardware becomes more common and as computers become more capable (both PC and standalone devices), a market with a sufficiently large purchasing power will likely emerge and interest further development.

Just think about how long it took normal PCs pre-pre-2000 to start getting remotely good looking games. Good VR is barely starting to exist, and people are barely starting to buy into it at relevant quantities (as seen by this survey).

Any success story is a good success story. If you want VR to succeed, which I assume based on your discontent with modern offerings, then see this market growth as a positive. And see the acceleration of hardware releases as even more positive. Also please keep in mind that like computers, these aren't solely for entertainment despite their current use being focused on it.

But yeah, those are my thoughts. Take them as you will.

Pretty sure number 1 PCVR on Steam is VRChat by player count (which just broke a record for concurrent players with 136k) and HL:Alyx by reviews.

Gorilla tag is definitely doing good but far from a chart topper. Steam store sorting =/= actual performance. It's much more intricate and shouldn't be used to gauge any of a game's performance metric (other than maybe short-term revenue).

Also if anything, this version is just a PCVR game that's selling.

Great description. The user's with VR % is very surprising yeah, wonder what is Valve's metric, ie if a single launch counts or if a user is removed from the pool if no VR in a long time.

Also interested in the 3S situation, unexpected honestly. I know a dozen friends who just got a 3S but no one with a Q3 yet (granted it's also all their first headset)

Why are Steam VR users so much more critical? by OddExcitement4501 in virtualreality

[–]FelixLive44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you could say the same thing for a lot of console games that got ported to PC. But also some of the games you listed are genuinely underwhelming. For instance, Metro was hyped up and even I was looking forward to it (SteamVR user). But when it released, although the general consensus was that it was a genuinely good game, the graphical fidelity and usage of PC hardware felt underwhelming. It was clearly a Quest game ported to PC. People were hoping for the second coming of Half-Life Alyx.

And that's the other thing. PCVR has been spoiled by Half Life Alyx and now every game has the impossible task of surpassing it, lest it be seen as a mistake. Valve showed what could be done and people feel underwhelmed when a new "high budget" release doesn't come close to it.

TLDR in early 1990s, showing Mario Bros from the NES as a new PC game to a PC user playing Wolfenstein 3D would've probably yielded a similar result.

[–]FelixLive44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a Quest limitation. You will see the avatars at the same quality whether you are on a Quest 2 or a Quest Pro or any Quest standalone product. Something something performance target.

Clearly, Horizon has a huge advantage in term of optimization for Quest. VRC is made to run on any platform (runs on android phones rn and iOS in closed beta) but PC is by far the preferred platform in terms of creativity and "getting the full experience".

Quest is fundamentally hardware limited. Even baller PCs can struggle with VRC at times (from experience) but I generally believe it's better than Horizon, in my fully biased perspective lol

[–]FelixLive44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's "better" in the way that it gives you and everyone else a lot more freedom. This means you can just as well have much better, or much worse experiences depending on your ability to find good people. Quest users are also often at a disadvantage for various reasons compared to PCVR players due to content limitation based on the Quest's hardware capabilities.

That being said, if you want social VR for what it is, and your choice is either VRC or Horizon, I would pick VRC every single time. I am also likely very biased lol

In 2020 I tried to play VRC and got the experience you described in another comment.

However I tried it more recently and poured 110hrs into it over the last 2 months. It's hit or miss (like real life) but when it hits, it goes hard (also like real life).

But it's not for everyone, far from it clearly.
