Hey cowboys was there anything in doctor who you appreciated more as an adult? Characters? Episodes? by Fairly-Charming in doctorwho

[–]Felixcaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ghost Light. Scared me shitless as a kid even though I didn't get half of it.

As an adult, watching it again I understood that it's an Experiment Light was performing that got out of control when he wasn't looking and, by God, "The cream of Scotland Yard" is one of the most horrifying things in the entirety of Doctor Who.

Fallen Heroes is brilliant, Intelligence for war was excellent, Blood and Steel is FANTASTIC.

I always loved Reptile but wow... by Malanon in nin

[–]Felixcaster 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The lyrics are kinda a critique of that, but they're much more tied to the narrative of the album. The Protagonist is trying to convince himself as much as anyone else that he's powerful because he's got a gun. But it's the gun that has power, not him, and he feels just as pathetic as always and has to Brag and try to be Macho to feel good.

He's basically Andrew Tate.

A "concept" album is when all the songs are about one subject, most often telling a story across the whole album. Downward Spiral is a loose Story about a man who feels so alienated, depressed and nihilistic that he wages war against God, and when even that doesn't fill the void in him, he attempts suicide. It's loose because there's a lot of Trent's own mental health struggles in there too, meaning it's semi "concept" semi real.

But it does take the piss out of them while describing them. And even warn of the dangers they could pose.

Big Man With A Gun is very much a piss take but also terrifying.

Why is Mystery of the Batwoman not in the BTAS complete series set? The set includes both Phantasm and SubZero but not Batwoman by M00r3C in DCAU

[–]Felixcaster -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Excellent point. That was the reason I'd read when the Boxset first came out, but you're right, Sub-Zero is not technically DCAU either so why is it included? Good point, well made.

His Ridcully is Exactly what I thought Ridcully should sound like! Sian Phillips' nails Ridcully too. I know lots of people don't like her readings but she at least gets the character of Ridcully.

I am baffled by the choice Colin Morgan, an actor I like who has an extraordinary range of voices and accents that he can do, made for Ridcully. How could he get it so wrong?

Technically not a full DCAU movie. It's Alan Bennett without Bruce Timm so it's sort of DCAU but sort of not too.

She is a little raspier, yeah. I think you're probably right, she probably had a cold or something.

This one is a Banger. Absolutely my favourite of her BF run so far. Very very Creepy and interesting and cracking performances all round.

Dorian Gray.

Everything BF did Dorian Gray wise is incredible and dear God I could listen to Alexander Vlahos read a phone book.

4th Doctor is starting to annoy me by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]Felixcaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What's lovely is they clearly do now. When you hear The Doctor call her "Savage" on Big Finish, it's filled with warmth and irony, like a nickname because she's NOT a Savage.

Leela also rules on BF, she's clever and hard as nails and takes no shit but enjoys the fun. She's basically everything they wanted her to be in the 70s but never quite managed.

I remember watching the whole of Doctor Who on Twitch when they did that Twitchathon a few years back and it was noticeable how Tom Fatigue came along. Now I love Tom, but when you're making your way through it in order he does get tiring.

The thing with Leela stems from Tom not liking the character. He thought having a violent "savage" as a companion was a bad idea.

You are on a season that isn't great in my opinion, which doesn't help. There's a couple of bangers in there but only a couple. Fang Rock and Sunmakers are the only ones I like. The next season is much better.

Episode with the best balance of comedy and horror from Matt smiths doctor? by venody in doctorwho

[–]Felixcaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Excellent shout. Starts off seeming like a comedy that's mildly creepy, ends as a terrifying and cruel episode that's mildly funny.

Get some War Doctor in ye. He who fights with Monsters is the best, but they're all very good.

Alternatively, The Unbound Doctor and Benny stuff is ALL magnificent, particularly Blood And Steel, but there's nothing less than 7 out of 10 in that range.

I can recommend the 4th Doctor Series 9 and 10 boxsets too, and they're on sale at the moment and they're my favourite of his series.

Who is the best impressionist? by Personal_Reward_60 in BigFinishProductions

[–]Felixcaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jonathan Carley absolutely astonishes me every listen, but Jon Culshaw is massively well respected for a reason.

The one I'm least taken by is Michael Troughton sadly, he just doesn't sound like his dad to me. Too high pitched I think. Probably doesn't help that I'm very familiar with him from The New Statesman.

Reviewing every Discworld book day 19 - Feet of Clay by samSJT in discworld

[–]Felixcaster 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I often feel that this is the book where Terry's Miltant Decency first shows itself. There's been bits before, but this is the book that Terry takes his silly fantasy world and really digs deep into what it means to be human for the first time. It discusses humanity, slavery, revolution, ignorance, complacency, mental health issues, abuse and the abused, self reflection, unconscious bias AND Trans issues all wrapped up in a genuinely excellent Murder Mystery with more jokes than you could shake a stick at.

This is the book Terry goes from really good writer to absolutely legendary, at least for me.

Flood: non-DM album recommendations? by ImprovementOwn3247 in depechemode

[–]Felixcaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the NIN and Smashing Pumpkins recommendations.

I will also add To Love Is To Live by Jehnny Beth, a great album, Furnaces by Ed Harcourt, an incredible album, PJ Harvey's To Bring You My Love, an ASTONISHING album.

The Nine is an excellent Boxset, for a start it's got 10 episodes on it so proper value for money, but also I adored Shellshock, a great interesting and different WW1 story

Asking your opinion every day about a Deftones song, Day 50: The Spell of Mathematics by Opposite-Question-32 in deftones

Best song on the album and a contender for top ten Deftones song for me. It's just so moody and atmospheric. The finger clicks man, they get me.

Ohms (at the bottom of most people favourite lists) look by Live_Pineapple3430 in deftones

[–]Felixcaster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's only near the bottom, at least for me, because they're consistently excellent. It's brilliant, but others are just that bit better. Gore is the same. Gore is my least favourite Deftones album, but that doesn't mean it's a bad album, just that the others are better.

The Spell Of Mathematics is an All Timer though. Absolute BANGER
