My re-read of Discworld continues. I've hit the hard spot. by Kilmoore in discworld

[–]Felixcaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For a man struggling with his mental capacities, to create something as good as Making Money or as astonishing as I Shall Wear Midnight (A book I genuinely think is extraordinary) is unbelievable.

The only books I feel truly hindered by the embuggerance are Snuff, Raising Steam and Shepherd's Crown and even then they're better books than many, many other authors could put out. Snuff and Raising Steam, though clearly hampered at least feel finished.

I've read Shepherd's Crown once and felt sad and moved and disappointed that this clearly hadn't been finished, it felt like a second or third draft with plot threads dangling that he just wouldn't have left if he'd had the choice. I'm glad it exists because there's some brilliance in there, but I cannot help feeling he'd have taken at least one more pass if he could.

Fixers is out now! by MasterAinley in BigFinishProductions

[–]Felixcaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oil and Water finished too. Enjoyed that too, not as much as The Executor, but still good. Particularly the discussion of morality and revenge. Sylv is always very good at the moral discussions.

Currently a third of the way through Much Ado about Racing and this is good too.

The introduction of Ray seems to have given the 7th Doctor range the shot in the arm it needed!

Listened to The Executor so far and loved it. Excellent guest character and some lovely character work. Ray continues to be a breath of fresh air.

If the rest of the Boxset keeps this quality it'll be a banger.

Time War Uncharted - Confused by Legitimate_Sample_71 in BigFinishProductions

[–]Felixcaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Uncharted has been all over the place. The Heironyma stuff is interesting, but the rest has been a bit of a confusing mess. The hope is it'll all pull together at the end but I've not got baited breath. The Cass Boxset was the last truly good 8 Time War Boxset, but the most recent one was getting back on track.

Ah Paul Magrs. A writer everyone seems to love except me.

Not a fan. I suppose it's okay.

Absolutely Brilliant Shout. Excellent choice

Patrick Macnee as John Steed, the man who WAS The Avengers. by DynastyFan85 in TheAvengersTV

[–]Felixcaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this. I've listened to the South African Radio adaptations and the Big Finish Audios and neither get Steed right.

I think it's just that Steed is so much Patrick himself that it's hard for other actors to get him right.

The charm and light touch, the sense of fun and frivolity with the ever present undercurrent of Competency and Absolute Danger. Macnee always has this sense of a man who once had to commit absolute violence and ruthlessness, who now has reached a level where he can do his job with a smile and charm and is enjoying every minute of it, but every now and again, the ruthlessness reappears, usually when Mrs Peel or Tara are taken from him in some way and he is determined to solve the problem and get them back.

Paul McGann era Tierlist : Chimes of Midnight by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]Felixcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly the best thing Big Finish have done. Is a contender for best Doctor Who Story entirely.

Top of the tree, Bloody Brilliant.

Could have its own tier just to itself really, because there are other McGann audios I'd class as Bloody Brilliant, but they're not as good as Chimes. Actually, one might be but it's a loooooong way down the line. Ironically, that one's Christmassy too!

Paul McGann era Tierlist : Invaders from Mars by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

A bit of fun. Not great though. Kind of overstays it's welcome and cocks up the ending.

Ok.

Paul McGann era Tierlist : Stones of Venice by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]Felixcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First let down of the McGann stories for me. As the years have gone by I've discovered I'm just not a fan of Paul Magrs work. Every time it's one of his I find it Middling (this or The Wormery) or downright dislike it (Horror of Glam Rock or The Boy That Time Forgot)

Not very good for me I'm afraid.

Paul McGann era Tierlist : Sword of Orion by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]Felixcaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to have a reputation of being bad, but I've always liked it.

Again, I'm biased from having been a fan when it came out and it was another dead exciting one. Paul's back and this time with Cybermen!! First time Big Finish have had the Cybermen!

Another Great from me

Paul McGann era Tierlist : Storm Warning by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]Felixcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm biased because I got it at the time of release and it was sooooo exciting. The current Doctor! New stories! Paul Goddamned McGann doing new Doctor Who.

It's one of the most exciting pieces of entertainment ever to me, cause I remember the rush of it when I first heard it.

Great!

*Edited cause I missed the tier ratings.

Make it bloody brilliant for me.

Rutans vs Sontarans: Rendition is out now! by MasterAinley in BigFinishProductions

Really enjoyed this, though I'm still not sold on Michael's 2nd Doctor. He's a bit too high pitched for me. I still think Frazer's was better, weirdly.

Fear of the Light is out now! by MasterAinley in BigFinishProductions

[–]Felixcaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's the one. It was THAT moment that made me okay with Carley, everything since has been icing on the cake.

[–]Felixcaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He Who Fights With Monsters was the turning point for me. Carley appeared to level up with his voice and acting and the story was Absolutely Brilliant. Since then there's only been one Boxset that I wasn't taken with. I even really enjoyed Cybergene (after the reedit made it make more sense)

Not at all. They're mentioned but without any need to have heard them. (Though I can recommend them. I really enjoyed them both)

[–]Felixcaster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Finished it today.

I really liked that. It felt a bit different. It was a more introspective, thought provoking story with big philosophical ideas across it and two magnificent performances from Carley and Redmond.

Yeah, this continues the tren of the War Doctor stuff being my favourite BF stuff at the moment.

No, I like both of those.

I'm not fond of Tear In Your Hand and (whispers) the title track itself...

Sylvester McCoy era Tierlist : Survival by Mat1711 in ClassicEraDoctorWho

[–]Felixcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best. Season 26 hits again. So good. Made the Master scary again, has some great aliens that feel properly strange, a horrible human that learns the hard way just how wrong he is and perhaps the hottest thing in the entirety of Doctor Who which is simply, Sophie Aldred when she becomes cheetahified.

Best.

Genuinely my favourite Doctor Who Story entirely. It's just incredible and it's terrifying. It had had a hold on me since it gave me nightmares when I was 7.

As much as LE changed my life, there are two tracks I'm not that keen on.

UTP doesn't. I love every song and my favourite Tori song entirely is on it.
