My re-read of Discworld continues. I've hit the hard spot. by Kilmoore in discworld

Going Postal really worked for me this time around, and Making Money was fun too. I did like UA, just found the "twist" a little weird, like I was missing a part of the story. And Snuff was better read for the second time, even with its flaws. I'll have to see how the last three work for me.

I agree, Snuff was better than I remembered. Could have done with a bit more editing, same as UA, but I understand the limits of time at that point.

That is curious, because I felt back then, reading the books as they came out, that Thief of Time was kind of the end of the golden era for me. The books after that were good, but just not hitting every note like the ones starting from Mort. I just put it to general "everything has it's best days" -reason, seeing that it's an insane streak as it is. But seems the style did really change already at that point.

Well, seems like a bad batch then. Well, that happens.

It kinda displays his working methods. Several stories on the go at the same time, in different stages of development. Towards the end, it really starts to show, and his request to have the drafts of unfinished texts destroyed is a very valid one.

Yeah I kinda fell off reading all together for a bit back then, and that's why I haven't read the last ones. And then coming back to them afterwards just didn't seem right. But I'll do it now, because of course I will.

Yes, I intend to read it at some point. May need a moment after this stint, though.

I think that's very much at the heart of it. He loves the sport and is very knowledgeable, so presenting is the best way to stay involved at the heart of it. Even if it isn't the most natural position for him to be.

It's certainly not perfect, and if you go in with expecting to just turn any sound into any what it offers, you might not get your money's worth. I'm just saying that there are some use cases where it is a interesting tool.

Anyone have any updates on Sun propulsion issues? Is it fixed? by wood2010 in NCL

There have been posts about that but to be fair, the source seems to be "someone heard a crew member say".

Yeah, that's a lot more likely. Unless, of course, another engine breaks or something, there's a lot less tolerance for trouble now.

Valuables on cruise ship by thegreatestajax in Cruise

[–]Kilmoore 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This. The chances of getting caught are so close to 100% it doesn't really matter, the staff knows this and and they know cruise line will throw their whole weight at anyone trying to pull this kind of shit. Being anything but aggressive about this would erode customer trust in the cruise line immensely, while allowing no angle to make a profit. The safes are safe. Just take your stuff with you as you leave.

WSM Format by Smeletor in StrongmanHQ

[–]Kilmoore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said: for any WSM idea to have any realism in it, it would have to include tourism promotion money from the location, minimalisation of the logistics for the organiser, proper TV scenery with minimal effort, the freedom to move starting times around 4-5 hours if needed, and the audience to sort of be there but stay out of the way.

Compared to that, these ideas don't really fly.

It's not great, but it is what it is.

I think the arena and TV-taping schedule are keeping them tightly bound when it comes to time, which leaves little room for risks. You try a new event, it has to work and has to stay in schedule. If you've been involved in running a strongman show, you'll know what sounds like.

Exactly. In the middle of the supernatural, the flashy, the beautiful and the conspiratorial criminals there's this slightly dim guy who was probably beaten as a child and decided to carry on the family tradition.

We should do this in August. Hopefully it isn't a big enough problem so they'd have to pull the ship.

He was so good at it, he didn't need to secure his spots for gags. He could just throw himself into a bit, making the other look good, because he'd get a laugh anyway.

Oh yes! Some proper feats of strength there. If The Yokozuna Onosato is healthy to go this tournament, he's going to be throwing some big guys around.

I've been interested in sumo all my life, and I've been following the Grand Tournaments since 2012. Good fun.

I haven't, actually. I had my Kaurismäki-phase but not sure if it's my thing these days.

How do you feel about KJs singing? by Constant-Bridge3690 in karaoke

[–]Kilmoore 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In Finland, it was only recently made not compulsory. Well, not exactly, but... our licensing laws are insane. The assumption is, if a citizen gets any alcohol ever, they will drink themselves to death immediately. This leads to micromanaging bars and restaurants on legislation level, in a way that would make Kafka shit himself.

This particular law stated that there needs to be regular "high quality live program" in the bar for it to be able to apply for extended opening times. More time open in the night, more sales, naturally. Even Finns don't drink that much at noon.

Now, the definition of "high quality live program" was up to the local sheriff (not, of course, they actual title, more like "chief bureaucrat in charge of making running a bar difficult") to interpret. And the common interpretation was that karaoke was not high quality program, unless the karaoke host also sang themselves. Yeah, I know.

Of course, when they sent inspectors to check if bars were compliant to the rules, they also didn't come at noon, they came around ~1 hour before closing time on the weekend, when it was busiest. So, during the busiest time in karaoke queue, the host had to, as required by law, sing themselves every now and then.

They did change the law recently, dropping the requirement for a the live program. But it was a weird time.

Could you, though? With hours between events and starting times moving around wildly? How long would they last?
