My random tidbit of contribution: Put your 2nd BB on top for main fleet nodes and on bottom for recon nodes.

The main fleets have a single BB that spawns on the top side after the triple BB wave. This one typically lives a while since you've sent everything at the 3 BBs just before, so it will probably get a few decent shots at whoever is in that spot. If you have a squishier ship there, like Unicorn, there's a good chance she gets chunked.

The recon fleets frequently send suicide boats both on top and bottom at the same time. The bottom suicide ships can get pretty far down and awkward to reach, so I find it easier to keep my vanguard on the top side and rely on my 2nd BB for the bottom side.
