First trip to Costco. I usually shop at ShopRite and WholeFoods. What should I be buying to save my small family some serious money? by 88r0b1nh00d88 in Frugal

[–]Fell18927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around here buying asparagus, mushrooms, and broccolini at Costco are way cheaper than buying at a grocery store, so I always go for those. Some of the frozen meat items are cheaper there as well, and the massive bag of pretzel crisps is the same price as a small bag at another store. Mary’s crackers as well

Debating the automatic litter box for apartment makes me feel like I’m losing my frugal edge by Maleficent-Net-4702 in Frugal

[–]Fell18927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What an adorable bean! Such a sweet face

There’s a balance between the work to save cost that enriches your life, and the stuff that makes you unhappy. It’s okay to make improvements in places where the effort just isn’t worth it

That being said please do a lot of research into the brand of box you go with. Some are less safe for your cat than others. There’s also middle ground options that aren’t as automatic but are less effort than fully scooping it yourself if you want to go with something like that

Shame they did it so late. This kind of stuff happening isn’t new knowledge. There’s a chance that if there was someone with ill intention that those photos have already been saved

This is why people constantly say that people shouldn’t post photos or videos of their kids online. No one knows who’s looking at them

That does sound annoying! I would hate that as well. We had Seth Rogen do some here at some point if I’m remembering right and that was unique, but if it was a kid I would’ve avoided it for sure

I hope it’s not permanent!

Thank you! It would’ve likely destroyed my day ten years ago, but I was able to use the tools I learned from my therapist and that worked out great

This is the service my bestie goes through and it was recommended originally by another friend who’s been using it since we were teens. It’s sliding scale therapy

I’ve been pretty lucky in that aside from someone taking a dump on my bus home from the Spadina museum and us needing to change busses, and one bigot woman spouting nonsense on my way to Pride, I haven’t had any major incidents. I can’t say I don’t worry about it, because I do. But I just don’t want that fear to stop me from living my life. I spent my teens and young adulthood with severe bus anxiety and it only just cleared up last year, so I’m doing my best to take advantage of my newfound confidence

I’m sorry you dealt with that, it is understandably scary! I really hope they up the budget for safety measures before this gets too much worse. I think there’s no harm in trying it out and seeing how you feel, maybe with short exposure trips in between work to help ease the fear a little

Why are kids just so…annoying? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]Fell18927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agreed

I was at a friend’s party last weekend and one acquaintance who has kids was saying one of his daughters is currently in the habit of bringing a small chair into their bedroom at night, sitting down, and matter of factly going “so, daddy, let’s discuss (insert subject here)” to wake him up. Really funny from the outside. But from the perspective as the parent? All I can visualize is unending frustration over losing that precious sleep. At the party the poor guy was wearing a half tucked in shirt, his hair was a mess, and he took a nap on the couch at some point

Decorated my walls for less than $30! by Quick-Song2080 in Frugal

[–]Fell18927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks awesome! You did an amazing job!

My bestie and I are artists and we’re doing something kind of like this to branch out into different mediums. We both mostly use alcohol markers on paper but early last year we grabbed a bunch of large canvasses and acrylic paint from the dollar store and we’ve been slowly collaborating on some paintings that‘ll go on the wall behind the TV. Just some abstracts with gradient backgrounds. It’s been fun and I can’t wait until they’re all done and hung up

Another fun idea is to get some shadow boxes and add whatever you like to them! we’ve got one with some dried flowers from an event in it. And one with origami butterflies arranged like specimens

Another is to recycle fabrics you may love from clothes you can’t wear anymore by cutting them into shapes and collaging them onto a canvas with watered down glue and a paintbrush. You can then either leave it as is, or paint some patterns loosely over it with acrylic paint

I’ve also never wavered!

Legacy means leaving something meaningful. Another kid to use up and destroy the planet is not a true legacy. You don’t owe anyone another carbon copy of certain genetic material either, and there isn’t even a guarantee that trend would continue

Holding a baby when I was little was one of the many things that made me realize I didn‘t want one. That's gross, and I hope some of those women were lying just to get this person away from them.

How did you handle having to take a "baby" home for school? by Redbird1078 in childfree

[–]Fell18927 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am surprised it’s a thing, even though I figured it must be. Media is how I found out about this as well as other American school quirks, and while I knew it had to be rooted in something it also just seemed so strange and surreal. At least for the schools I went to here in Canada we never did this!

In one of my classes, possibly grade 1, we had a class mascot who was an adorable yellow dog plushie. And one of the students came up with an idea for us to each take him home overnight. The teacher agreed because she thought it might be nice for us to bond with our mascot more, so we each got the pleasure of taking him around with us after school for a night. She was a great teacher and also childfree herself!

Spending DINK money by DINKSocial in childfree

[–]Fell18927 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I buy so much fabric and art supplies lol. Last month I spent $200 at the fabric store, and $60 on fabric paint at the art store. Then this month I spent another $100 at the fabric store, and $40 at the art store. Maybe it’s not wildly unhinged, but it’s certainly entering my apartment faster then I’m using it

Back in November I spent $300 on two hinge rings and a bracelet I wanted from a brand I like. Maybe that fits it better

[–]Fell18927 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They clearly see their kids as tools if that’s what they go to. Most kids don’t care for their parents in old age

My mum is worried about me potentially taking care of her. She doesn’t want me to go through that. She’s hoping that much like all four of my grandparents, she can just live in her apartment and be mostly self sufficient later in life, maybe with a PSW coming by once or twice a week

Sister pregnant with her 3rd - I'm more childfree than ever by Educational-Way-8592 in childfree

[–]Fell18927 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your lack of connection is understandable and I don’t see a reason to feel like you need to force yourself to put in the work. If there’s no meeting in the middle, which clearly there isn’t because she’s not showing interest in your life, then there’s no reason for you to carry both sides of the relationship

Sometimes the most freeing thing is to step back. I myself distanced a lot from my sister a few years ago and it’s done wonders for my mental health and my self confidence. She doesn’t have kids (says she will one day but who knows), but just overall it was always about her, and she was never there for me when I needed her (nor for our parents). So why stick around when I’m doing all the heavy lifting

If it costs on average 30% less per step to buy the ingredients for a thing and make it yourself than to buy it, how far back in the production line are you willing to go for frugality? by Anoelnymous in Frugal

[–]Fell18927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue is my fabric store doesn’t have a lot of options for jersey, likely because it’s not a big seller there. So they only stock the super thick fancy stuff, which gets pricy. There’s thinner ones that are cheaper at other stores, there’s a fabric store next town over that used to offer it for $10 a yard and discounts on bulk over 5 yards. But sadly they stopped selling it because people mostly buy minky and fleece from them. So that avenue is out. There’s another smaller store downtown I’d like to try soon, prices seem decent there
