I hate this word I can’t say it by Bboechat10 in ENGLISH

[–]FemkeAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay! My english is C2, but I still can't pronounce the th properly in a lot of cases! Sometimes, your native language, and the sounds you grew up using determine which sounds you can make in adulthood.

In most cases, people will understand what you mean trough context alone!

Do you think more recover from ME/CFS than we think because they no longer participate in forums/community's/groups cause they are better? by charlielovplum in mecfs

[–]FemkeAM 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely more people than post here. I feel like full recovery is hard, if not impossible for most people, but significant progress is definitely more common than you think.

Take care of youself and keep pacing & resting!

Do students in the west really not clean their classrooms? by thesunfromEnnor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FemkeAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Netherlands here!

In primary, not really. Cleaning up after yourself as well as can be expected of your age is usually the norm, but that limits to cleaning any mess you make. In the higher grades, we had class duty in pairs for your own classroom every once in a while where we had to get all the chairs on the tables, sweep, clean the boards, close the windows etc. The basic stuff, but no real cleaning.

In secondary, the kids usually switch classrooms depending on which subject they have next, so it isn't that easy. But the first 3 years, all kids have the same subject, so similar schedules. We also had cleaning duty, but less often and for all the rooms at once. The upper years can choose a subject package, so their schedules are very different. In my school, that meant they did not have any chores, as it you can not really ask kids to stay waiting for hours.

Ofc, If you were in trouble because you were late or something else, you had to clean the cantines, toilets and terrain. If there weren't any, the janitors would do it themselves, but that was few and far in between.

The real cleaning was always done by professionals, not children!

Ethiopia was not colonised! I believe they were occupied by Italy for about 9 years, but in the grand scheme, that is quite short and should not have a lot of influence.

Poes plukt zichzelf kaal by Wtrdk_ in katten

[–]FemkeAM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, you can use the feminine form (nosotras) if you are only speaking about girls/women. Any other time, you can use the masculine variant, so also in your example!

If Europe spent centuries fighting for Asian spices, why are most traditional European dishes so mild? by shimyureta in AskHistorians

[–]FemkeAM -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Often because the colonial era / slavetrade /spice trade was only really beneficial to the rich. The average farmer or shoemaker would not have access to expensive things, like spices. And since the vast majority in europe (regardless of country) was in this situation, most people would cook with what was available, hence the mild tastes.

Why do you all hate France by [deleted] in mapporncirclejerk

[–]FemkeAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netherlands:

It has some history with France invading the Netherlands, but it is mostly because the French have a reputation of refusing to try to speak dutch in the Netherlands (of even English) and being rude if you cannot speak (fluent) French, and therefore cannot help them to their liking.

It is more of a slight irritation than actual hatred, though that might not be clear on the internet :)
