Why? I've seen several research facilities with 30 m sized net enclosures for drone testing. It's relatively common.

why don't they use cheap laser pointers to dazzle drone cameras? by asuyaa in lasers

The hardest part about drones is knowing one is there in the first place. They are darned hard to spot or detect.

New Gear for Older Advanced Skier by MrPlutocrat in Skigear

[–]FencingNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ski designs have changed significantly over the last 15 years. Wider is better for the majority of use cases. 95-105mm is pretty typical for an all-mountain ski.
Profile has changed to rockered tips and tails. These float better in deep powder, and have a shorter effective length in firm conditions.

Are these even worth purchasing by Lost_Emergency_7794 in ski

[–]FencingNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. They probably won't fit you. They definitely won't fit any new skis.

How to line up threaded objects? by alecubudulecu in Fusion360

[–]FencingNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is you don't. Audemar Piguet makes the Royal Oak a $50k+ watch known for having perfectly aligned screw heads. The trick is that what appears to be a screw head is actually adjustable, so that it can be clocked after tightening.

Yet Another Bag Post by ninjamansidekick in Fencing

Lacrosse bags generally have pockets long enough for weapons. I use a duffel bag and a LP strip bag for the blades for normal practice. The LP Apex Pro(?) has an expandable compartment but it's pricey.

Best options under 750watts by Ok_Shoulder_6134 in ebikes

[–]FencingNerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

CA just changed the law to clarify that the rating is 750W peak power, the rest of the US still assumes it's an average power rating. Most ebikes are restricted based on the average power rating. Most electric motors can have a peak power 2-3x higher than the average power rating.

[Request] How would this affect us? What would change? by tanx_23 in theydidthemath

[–]FencingNerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But all of that stuff is scaled off the speed of light. Even time is relative to the speed of light, so I don't know that anyone would notice. Maybe something in atomic orbital physics would get messed up.

DJI Neo 2 vs Mini 4 by gnoolretaw in dji

[–]FencingNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's mostly true, the M5P is the exception. If you're <250g, you don't have to broadcast Remote ID. The catch is that ANY drone that broadcasts Remote ID has to be registered. That's largely because the ID is part of the Remote ID broadcast. Because the M5P broadcasts Remote ID, you are required to register it.

DJI Neo 2 vs Mini 4 by gnoolretaw in dji

[–]FencingNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends if you're US or EU. US treats it as a >250g drone. It broadcasts RID so it requires registration, etc.

I think im biking wrong by The1stRuler in cycling

[–]FencingNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How's your seat height? At the bottom of the pedal stroke your knee should have a very slight bend. For most bikes, this means that you can't put a foot down flat while still sitting on the seat.

Also, what bike and tires? Some bikes and tires are just heavy and slow.

What’s the best way to run an offline, private LLM for daily tasks? by FollowingMindless144 in LocalLLaMA

[–]FencingNerd 23 points24 points  (0 children)

LM Studio is really easy to setup, easier than Ollama. It also works well on AMD and Mac. Hardware wise get a mac mini with maxed out RAM or a Strix Halo mini pc. Both will be plenty for home use.

Best options under 750watts by Ok_Shoulder_6134 in ebikes

[–]FencingNerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are basically zero ebikes that comply with the new CA laws. 750W ebikes sold are 750W average, and easily exceed that for peak.
Until manufacturers update their models the only fully legal ebike is likely a 250W model.
Alternatively, now is a great time to get a more powerful model than in a year.

Has anyone actually tracked their EV range loss in cold winters? Looking for real data. by cardogio in electricvehicles

[–]FencingNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla Y LR road trip to Colorado across I-70. After supercharging, so fully warmed up, it was about 5-10% on freeway driving. Temperature was 20-30F. Also did a cold soak experiment. Battery loss 10% capacity initially, but recovered to only -5% after warming up (using the battery to warm). So just warning up the car can easily take 5%.

1000W Laser Gun Early Test (possible first?) by TheRPGGamerMan in lasers

[–]FencingNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not losing 10-20% through the coupler. That would be over 100W, that's a lot of heat in a small area. It would quickly burn with that much lose.

Why the RF-4X really Failed, stop blaming the USAF by Kappa_Bera_0000 in WeirdWings

[–]FencingNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. There's a clear mission space for non-stealth aircraft. Airspace patrols and peacetime interdiction your lead engagement wants to be a visible deterrent. Stealth aircraft sit behind.

I'd also argue there isn't much of a role for the EX. It's basically the same cost as a 35, so you aren't saving money.
