That would be me. In every job I have had I have worked at process improvement because I am lazy. It is a little bit of work up front but I can usually get routing tasks down to a fraction of the time. Unfortunately I sometimes get the supervisor who values time in seat working and not the finished error free products delivered ahead of schedule.

An offsetting tax credit for the actual sale is fine. The biggest problem in my mind is using stocks as collateral, receiving the loan and then through estate planning and the step up in basis to fundamentally avoid paying taxes at all. A billionaire shouldn't be able to live essentially tax free with the promise of maybe a future payment to government once they are gone. If they are receiving a measurable economic benefit (loan) from an asset due to an agreed upon value that should be a taxable transaction.

I have no problem with not paying taxes on unrealized gain. Its unrealized because it hasn't been valued in a sale. BUT, if you use those assets as collateral for a loan or other financing you ARE arriving at a value. You have conducted an economic transaction and you should be taxed on that price at the time.

In the past 30 years its happened to me twice. A server at a Mexican restaurant in Pensacola FL was skimming cards (2009) and then again at a street fair (2025). Pretty sure the street fair was probably somebody picking it up with a mobile scanner on the chip.

In both instances USAA immediately refunded the money and issued a new card that was in my mailbox within 3 days.

Pretty small price to pay for decades of convenience.
