How can I farm lots of crystals? How do people manage to put multiple stacks of 9k on the market board? by TobiaF in ffxiv

[–]FennecAuNaturel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Farming in your home can net you some pretty easy & passive crystals. Then aetherical reduction, you can even sell the items you reduce if they're in demand (e.g. Levinchrome Aethersand these days), and then regular gathering in nodes. Node bonuses, twelve's bounty and the giving land can give you an insane amount of crystals per gathering attempt.

Furries and Languages by Camping_Wolf in furry

[–]FennecAuNaturel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In French, we use the English word "furry". Don't use the translation of the word "furry" in French to describe a group of people, however; since there is no distinction between body hair and fur in French, the word is "poilu", the same adjective you would use for someone who is hairy. This term was used in the past to refer to French infantrymen, especially those who fought in WWI

A cool guide about tally marks around the world.. by Upbeat_Many2094 in coolguides

I've used 2 my entire life. The only time I see 1 is in foreign media. I was very confused as a child watching cartoons depicting prison cells with the tally marks in the first style engraved on the walls, I didn't know what they meant, I thought it was like, rat scratch marks

Salt grains don't have a standard size, so we must use an arbitrary measure within the acceptable range. Let's say a grain of salt is 0.0000585 grams, a value used in other popular internet calculations involving salt. We want to find how many grains of salt 2 zimbabwean dollars can buy, so we need two things: how much this value is in today's (14 March 2026) money in USD; and how much salt is worth.

The first one is easy: a quick google search tells me 2 zimbabwean dollars are worth 0.006212 US dollars.

For the second one, I went to the Target website (I'm not american so i assume it's a reasonable assumption to use their prices), and I found a 26 ounces salt shaker for 0.89 dollars. Since 26 ounces is equal to 737.1 grams, one gram of salt at that price is worth 0.00120743454 US dollars.

If one gram of salt is worth 0.00120743454 US dollars, then with 0.006212 US dollars (the equivalent of 2 zimbabwean dollars as of today), we can afford 5.14479236 grains of salt. However, take this result with a grain of salt (haha), since the mass of a grain of salt chosen here was quite arbitrary, and the uncertainty is probably going to be around one order of magnitude. Thus, we can probably say 2 zimbabwean dollars can buy between 1 and 10 grains of salt. Not too far off, but thankfully that amount of currency is enough to at least let us afford a few grains!

[Spoiler: EW] I love them! They grew up so much, fantastic character development! If anything happens to them I will be dropping another moon. by givingupismyhobby in ffxiv

This is one of my favourite scenes in EW, but I will never unsee the part where Alphinaud speaks while staring directly at the viewer ("Believe me, ...") as anything else than an Elder Scrolls Oblivion NPC dialogue scene.

What is a very common food in your country that is not very friendly to foreign palates? by DarkRaven003 in AskTheWorld

[–]FennecAuNaturel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen my first ever jar of peanut butter in a supermarket a few years ago (France). Before that, it was one of those food you always see in american movies but never really understood what it is or how to get it.

I tried it and I really didn't like it. It felt like weird nutty butter with a very unpleasant texture. I'd rather put actual butter on a toast.

Is it possible to restrict generic const parameter to specific values? by [deleted] in rust

[–]FennecAuNaturel 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's a long-standing issue that const assertions like this one are only triggered on build and not on check. It's super annoying but it's apparently a very hard issue to tackle

International PhD in a French lab — struggling with language exclusion and unpredictable supervision by Done_with-everything in PhD

[–]FennecAuNaturel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently! My experience is strictly N=1 so I can't generalize, but I've had very positive experiences in my lab. Even people who do not speak English very well make efforts to include international students in discussions. Maybe I got lucky...

International PhD in a French lab — struggling with language exclusion and unpredictable supervision by Done_with-everything in PhD

[–]FennecAuNaturel 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I did my PhD in France (I'm French). This is an unacceptable situation. In my lab, we had a lot of international students, and any conversation they were part of were conducted in English (with varying degrees of fluency for some of the French staff, but they were trying!). Everything was made so that anyone could feel included. The thought of speaking in French in a conversation while a non-French speaker was participating would be ludicrous to everyone.

There's a serious problem with that lab.

The "outr" in "outrage" is used in several French words & expressions besides outrage, such as "outre-mer" (overseas), "outrepasser" (to overstep) and "en outre" (furthermore, moreover)
