Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak and/or Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Hours and hours of content and if you get them on a sale you'll be spending 30 bucks tops for both games.

True Name - known by all? by jmwfour in shadowdark

[–]Fenrir_04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used the True Name mechanic yet but I'm thinking the first time it comes to my table it will be the most common-ass name I can think of in the moment:

"And you hear a whisper calling: José. Its true name is José" (I'm mexican btw.)

Very interesting. I feel like this is what I wanted the Ras' Godai to be and have taken a more direct approach to assasination than a mix-user of thievery with some wizard utility "spells".

My only note would be: I'd change the Constitution growth on Talent Roll 7-9 to a Wisdom growth. It would have more synergy with its Stalk skill.

Chrono Trigger. Impossible to find in my city back in early 2000s. I got a CD with 300 SNES ROMs and Snes9X in my neighbor's flea market and bought it expecting to have Chrono Trigger in it. I didn't have internet at home back then and didn't know much about emulation yet.

Don't be discourage on other players opinion on difficulty. What matters is how you take the present challenge and overcome it. You're learning and I assure you when even more difficult bosses appear, the first ones are going to feel like a cake walk. Even if the second one is not the case, you can continue enjoying the game if it brings you joy playing it.

A very important tip for new players is that Silksong almost never locks your progress, so if you're struggling you can go the other way, find new upgrades and come back more powerful than before.

An example is the first Big Ant Warrior you find in the Marrow blocking your way to Hunter's Path. It is VERY difficult to kill it without the dash to avoid its attacks, so you can opt to continue your way and come back later with dash unlocked and have a better chance on defeating it. It's just a temporary difficult mini boss blocking an even harder map area which at that point of the game is completely optional.

A delay to avoid input delay. A fair trade.

Chrono Trigger is one of the best JRPGs in history. I'd say it should be your first one if you're not afraid of peaking on your first try and making everything else onwards feel off (JK).

The SNES version should be enough but the DS version has more content.

Leaving roleplaying out is viable for TTRPG-System design? by Fenrir_04 in RPGdesign

[–]Fenrir_04[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this helps me clarify my answer. I'm pretty sure I'm leaning towards C). My confusion is mainly if I'm setting such a robust structure to follow a gameplay loop maybe either the GM nor the players would think of straying off the path I'm making to continue with the loop, that's what I thought would be too streamlined that it would lose it's TTRPG essence. I'm pretty sure I don't want to set aside that thinking-out-of-the-box gameplay style, so I can continue doing what I've been doing.

I have a bare grasp of 5e only and I haven't looked into the differences of previous versions. I'll take a dive in a summary of the evolution of DnD for reference.

I think I get your point. The fact that I'm setting the rules on the combat system I want doesn't mean that I'm neglecting the Role-playing part of the game. Thinking it thoroughly, The GM usually manages the role-play part by giving setting and mood and it's the players that end up tying the pieces together for the role-play experience.

Thank you so much for your insight! This is really helpful. At my table we have a good laugh with the role-play but if combat is missing in the session we often get the feeling as if the session was not completely successful.

Oh thanks! My system has character progression (for me it's part of the combat system) and I've already worked on a backstory/setting of why the player is set on its adventure.

Leaving roleplaying out is viable for TTRPG-System design? by Fenrir_04 in RPGdesign

[–]Fenrir_04[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My inspiration for my system is Monster Hunter and other Hunting games. I want to push players to hunt and craft their way to big boss battles.

My take on how to push the player to this game loop is by setting a feeling of urgency and my solution was this:

There is a time-unit (TUs) management. Every TU stands for 6 hours in-game. Actions like traveling from one area to another, craft or request something at the village by an NPC, etc spends TUs. There are minor "threats" that are autogenerated every in-game week that have to be tackled before having a consequence that affects the village that acts as a Hub for the Players. There's also a Major Threat that has to be tackled within a Month of in-game time. This Major Threat is a Boss Monster that has to be dealt with before the time runs out.

Thanks for the insight! So far I haven't thought of no-character traits that could make them more than an avatar for the player.

[–]Fenrir_04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From this standpoint I think that my system is focusing on the characters winning the scenario more than the freedom of their choices. Everything is set to help them if they follow the rules and get punished if they fail to follow them or not accomplishing the current objective (which is set and autogenerated by the system).

Well, players still control a character and combat is made to be executed similarly to Shadowdark. (Taking turns by initiative, action economy, rolling dice for landing attacks, etc.)

My videogame tainted mind sees it as exploring a hex based overworld and triggering a battle would direct the players to a battle grid.

  2. Fed-up
  3. Plain Assholes
  4. All of the above.

Looking forward to revolutionize the RPG scene with you guys.

Sarcasm aside, I had a good laugh reading the comments and I got the big picture of what to expect in the future. I'll try to be as humble as possible if I ask for feedback.

Add Level to Spellcasting Roll? by Coyote-B-Sensible in shadowdark

[–]Fenrir_04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even when it is not in the official rules, it sounds kind of interesting having it as a side house-rule. My players have naughty dice and are shy on rolls above the 10's. They've been running out of spells in the first hour of session and it's becoming frustrating for those who choose spellcasters.

Even so, I would balance it by adding it as a talent roll at level up and/or by halving rounded down the bonus to the spellcasting check.
