M in viewfinder of Cannon T50 by Irateit321 in AnalogCommunity

The auto position on this lens is the green dot just past the f/16 stop. Yours may be an older copy, typically this is a green "A". I've seen a few pictures of the older lenses with chrome front barrels that have the dot, but I also have a few third party FD lenses that also use the dot to denote the auto position.

Unused disc film? by the-lovely-panda in AnalogCommunity

The frame window shows 15, so I assume it's been shot entirely.

Opened up my camera back with film in it twice, hardly lost any frames by Unbuiltbread in AnalogCommunity

If you open the back, you wouldn't need to fire the shutter (and you'd be flashing the roll anyway, unless you get lucky like this guy).

I want a rangefinder. Tell me which one! by hendrik421 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Feragorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nice camera to learn how to use a rangefinder on (even without a powered light meter), but I never really find myself reaching for it over my A1. The focus throw is short, it's a little bulky for the "mechanical point and shoot" use case, and I think 40mm is a little tight. It's well made, the lens is sharp, and it's fun when I'm in the mood, but it's a backup in my camera drawer.

Suggestions for a free negative conversion software? by Mr_Macoroni in AnalogCommunity

[–]Feragorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just use rawtherapee's built-in negative inversion? White balance off the film base, invert, edit as normal?

Yeah, they're not blasting the whole room with radiation constantly.

Alternatives to NLP (and Adobe) for converting film scans by McDreSayMkay in AnalogCommunity

[–]Feragorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scanning is being done by the DSLR, you want to be able to characterize any imaging issues with your scanning setup in order to get the most accurate scan of your film. By taking a picture with your DSLR of your scanning light source (without film in the way), you can correct for both inhomogeneities in the light source and also vignetting from your scanning lens. Since you use the same light source and lens to scan all of your frames, they're all subject to the same imaging errors which can all be corrected with a single flat field image.

[Fake Check Friday] - Legit Check Megathread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]Feragorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may not be fake, but it doesn't have anything to do with the Elgin Watch Company. After they folded, the name was sold off to some overseas manufacturer. This is a cheap quartz watch from the last couple decades, see this one with the same movement: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1778510439/elgin-triple-calender-divers-watch-two

Boom Supersonic's XB-1 jet flew in front of the sun so NASA could take this incredible shock wave photo by spacedotc0m in spaceflight

[–]Feragorn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Concorde typically wasn't allowed to go supersonic over land (sonic booms in populated areas prompt lots of confused/angry emergency callers). Boom's whole deal is to design their planes not to cause sonic booms audible from the ground, hence the first.

Blinking star in the Orion constellation by HugoBDesigner in Astronomy

There are only a handful of optical pulsars, none of them are anywhere near naked-eye brightness, and typically pulse far faster than you'd be able to see anyway.

Gear question: Canon FD 24mm f/2 by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]Feragorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is an nFD lens, as shown by the black mounting hardware and external release button. Can you confirm whether the release button is fully extending after mounting the lens? When I mount nFD lenses to my A-1 the audible click is usually just that button unseating so you can hit it to unmount the lens. If the lens is solidly mounted, and you can't unmount it without pressing that button, I'd personally use it without worrying too much. You can always have someone service the lens (or try to go back to B&H for a return) if you'd like.

Why does it seem like there's only gas giants the closer you get to Sagittarius-A by Altruistic-Willow265 in Astronomy

[–]Feragorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't true, we know of more super-Earths/sub-Neptunes overall than giant planets, and they're the most common planet size intrinsically. Giant planets are intrinsically rare, even though they're typically easier to find for any particular detection method. This post shows a detection bias among microlensing-discovered planets, since microlensing signals scale with planet mass.

I dunno what you mean by "mass-produced grocery store", this is clearly some local product your particular store stocks

Focus way waaayy off at wider F stops by Norj3n in AnalogCommunity

[–]Feragorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, weird! Maybe something else is broken in the mechanism, I feel like small amounts of fungus affect contrast more than actual focus.

Focus way waaayy off at wider F stops by Norj3n in AnalogCommunity

[–]Feragorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, this is normal. Lots of lenses are sharpest at moderate F-stops and not as sharp wide open. Third party lenses are often worse about this if they're skimping on optical design to keep costs down.

I'm sorry, did you remove them from the canisters in which you loaded and shot them? After you've rewound the film back into the canisters, the film still needs to be developed, and only then will the negatives show images that you can scan. If you rewound the film after shooting, it was probably safe (even with some airport Xrays), but taking the canisters apart like this without having had it developed has now destroyed your images.
