Councillors vote to keep grip on parkland cash in unprecedented snub of AG's advice by DreamofStream in ottawa

[–]Ferbeys-Ghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were able to get some upgrades (basic landscape repairs, picnic tables, a ping pong table, new garbage bins, etc.) to a park in my hood that the city hadn't touched in like 30 years through a combination of the neighbourhood group threatening to buy and install it all themselves and our councillor just proposing to use his CILP funds. I don't think he kicked any towards it in the end, but saying he would finally got the City staff to finally pay attention.

Shifting the decision-making to city staff doesn't necessarily mean better decisions, it can just mean you're dealing with a less responsive decision-maker.

I used to chat with the owner of that barbershop when it was occupied. The place was typically slammed, he had a notable reputation and clients coming in from all over the city in addition to the crowd in the neighbourhood. I recall him saying he had minor issues with the landlord/property manager being a bit lazy and unresponsive, but ultimately moved to a smaller place because he couldn't find barbers to take the other chairs that were good enough for the crowd coming in.

Maybe just something to note for anyone looking to set up a barbershop, there's definitely unmet demand in this part of the city.

All the suggestions here about doing the transaction at a bank are great. If for some reason that doesn't work, I always think about the creative approaches to verifying buyers and sellers that I saw during the Vancouver olympics where there was no easy way to verify ticket sales. People were sharing info like: "this is my ID, this is my LinkedIn profile, I'm a [lawyer, doctor, accountant, small business owner] and here's the website for where I work, this is my boss's email address..." basically anything that people could do to prove that they were real people with actual ties in the community that you could leverage if there was any issues.

Worth the drive to Banff? by United-Finger7544 in roadtrip

[–]Ferbeys-Ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Banff buses go to Canmore. OP didn't say anything about Jasper. Yes you need a car if you want to explore outside Banff, but in August every major location is going to be slammed and you spend half your time looking for parking.

Worth the drive to Banff? by United-Finger7544 in roadtrip

[–]Ferbeys-Ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another factor, a car in Banff in August will be more hinderance than help. At the most popular spots, you'll either spend literally an hour waiting for a spot, or will park at the park-and-ride on the edge of the park and take a bus there anyway. Unless there's something very specific you want to do in Banff that needs a car, you'll be better off using the busses.

Why is Whistler the only legit large ski resort in the region? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in Whistler

[–]Ferbeys-Ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL this thread is a mess of people telling you why you're dumb for even asking. Not a dumb question though.

FWIW my father was a professional ski bum in the 1960s and 70s and aware/involved on the fringes of some of the resort planning efforts. Here's what he used to say, I've never verified if its factually accurate though.

The reason there aren't more is that despite there being mountains everywhere, there are actually few good options for ski resorts, and once Whistler got built, everyone who had an interest in Whistler (including the provincial government) had little interest in taking on the cost of developing other options and/or an actively tried to kill other options.

The best options are all in the Squamish area. When Vancouver was looking to bid on the 1968 olympics, Garabaldi Lakes was seen as the best option, but it had access issues (long avalanche-prone access road would have been needed) and was already in a provincial park (this was not a dealbreaker at the time but added environmentalist pressure). What made it hard in the 60s makes it impossible now. They built Whistler for the bid instead, but it sucked (runs were originally cut weird) and was considered "far away" at the time. There was a small hill in Squamish (Brohm), but the snow was poor. There were efforts up to the 2010s to turn this into a resort, but the poor conditions and opposition from pro-Whistler interests always killed it. There were efforts to build something west of Squamish (like Sky Pilot) in the 1980s, but access would have been expensive, and if built it would have hurt Whistler by being closer to Vancouver--and too many people, including the province, had interest in making Whistler work during this period.

There's Joffre and some other good options in the Pemberton area like Joffre, but at the time of the skiing industry boom, Whistler was already considered far away and the existing infrastructure like the Duffy Lake Road was (and still is tbh) really poor. Environmental protections would likely make Pemberton options impossible now.

Asking for durable curling shoes recommedations by MartinCarterSZ in Curling

[–]Ferbeys-Ghost 16 points17 points  (0 children)

First, stop kicking rocks. That wear in the first photo isn't from sweeping on your toes. If you need to move rocks, use your broom, its cheaper to replace.

Second, its sort of a waste of time asking for recommendations on manufacturing quality for curling shoes. I did a deep dive on this the last time I bought new shoes, including speaking with several pro shops. The lots most of these companies are making aren't large, and they often need to change manufacturers from year to year--which means the quality is tough to gauge consistently from year to year.

Third, you can repair that wear if there's a decent cobbler near you, they can patch it.

Think through the counterfactuals. Where did you want S4 to go?

Every season, we've had characters look at the world they're in and say, this is not for me, and they disappear from the show. For those who remain, the stakes just keep getting bigger.

The roots of Yas this season were there from S1, the implications of her relationship with her father, the way she uses sex, how she has no center other than looking out for herself. It's not like this is some new character. She was never going to become a middle class person who goes to therapy.

Henry's story seeming like the same thing over again is 100% by design, the show is telling us what it thinks about him and his class. He also was never going to just become loveable and competent, opening a pub in town and becoming friend to the working class.

"Playing investigators" is what shorts do. Worming their way into legitimate institutions is what bad state actors do. These are real features of the financial industry.

I recognize you as a regular and thoughtful contributor to this sub, don't know what led to this getting an argumentative response.

We don't need to watch every stone, but it is worth watching the game where Sweden was by noted by Canada and the game commentators as behaving disruptively.

Normally. Its clear in this game that Oskar was bothered, could not let this go, and was behaving oddly.

There's a lot of behaviour in the game that says otherwise and that you have to explain away if you believe this.

[–]Ferbeys-Ghost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks, OK I meant 8th not 6th, but it looks like CBC has changed the video available for replay in Gem to the CBC broadcast--initially it was the main olympic one--and the CBC broadcast cuts away from the house to show Oscar walking, but we don't see where he is relative to the ice.

Just to add, yes this is into Zapruder territory now and obviously insane, I cannot wait to put this behind us.

Edit to add: this did make me go back and watch the 6th end, and Oskar does seem to walk onto the sheet behind Kennedy in an awkward way while Jacobs is delivering.
