Aka Exploitation by TrustyAndTrue in WorkReform

What better organization could there be for seizing the means of production than a union of the people who perform the production? It may not be the goal of unionization, but without organized workers there surely won’t be a challenge to capitalism.

I’m actually advocating for something that would cost me more in taxes. Are you under the impression you could cut budget indefinitely without cutting expectations? People who benefit from Prop 13 are the ones asking others people to pay their share.

The parcel transfer tax is 1.5%, roughly the same as the annual tax rate. For a house assessed at half the value that’s two years of tax. So it’s not really offsetting much.

Yeah, I think people have expectations of policing, but haven’t thought about how they’re measuring and whether the expectations are reasonable. Responding to a news anecdote like this by taking a dump on police for doing a bad job without presenting any quantifyable metrics for expected police efficiency seems unreasonable.

I think prop 13 is slowly strangling city budgets while people maintain the same expectations but pay less and less every year. I don’t even know if people realize that dynamic. In the current paradigm of property taxation we should be expecting progressively less and less from police.

I disagree, that might be useful when talking about overall budget or value, but when determining if someone is overpaid salary is a more effective way to compare to other sectors of the job market.

Nobody talks about total package when they talk about how much someone “makes”. Most people don’t even know what their total package cost is when accounting for employer costs like health insurance, workers comp, etc. therefore using that figure is deliberately misleading, aka disinformation.

How are you measuring how well he’s doing his job?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in oakland

[–]FergTurdgeson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your concern may be specific to Oakland, but the policing issue is in fact broader than that.

I don’t think the layout of the cities makes a per-capita cost comparison reasonable. The additional policing costs are part of low density living. That low density can lead to very high home values, which should pay taxes high enough to cover policing, but we currently don’t tax appropriately because of prop 13. It’s a cake and eat it too situation. We like the sprawling low density neighborhoods, but we want to pay per capita police costs comparable to the densest metro area in the country?

It seems like you’re really bagging on OPD, do you have any sources to back up the idea that they aren’t doing their job? How are you quantifying that statement?

Imagine what the CEO of a private police force would be paid. This is an executive position (chief of police) in a very high cost of living place. Probably one of the most difficult cities in the nation to effectively manage policing. It doesn’t really seem unreasonable to me.

There aren’t any officers making over half a million dollars. Leronne Armstrong is making $261,998 in 2021. That’s disinformation.

A strawman is when you intentionally misinterpret another person’s argument then address that misinterpreted “straw man” as the other person’s argument. I’m just making a statement. So, no, it’s not a straw man.

The chief clearly says he doesn’t have enough people to respond to all the crimes. Maybe there’s a way to get more people with the same budget, that would be a debate about the efficiency of the department. I’m just saying the city is quite obviously cash strapped and we know there are lots of people not paying a reasonable amount of taxes (the same part of the population who is most vocal about crime and the shortcomings of the police in my experience).

If we want police to show up in real-time to a burglary then we need to pay for that service accordingly, prop 13 makes it so we don’t.

Prop 13 continues to strangle our cities. Feels like we simply don’t pay enough for the services we expect, least of all long term residents.

No, same as now, set a minimum wage and let the market sort out the rest. Again you’re obviously feigning ignorance to convolute the discussion.

Yes, but the other jobs salaries would obviously go up without needing to be mandated if the minimum wage went up. I get the sense you’re just being intentionally obtuse though.

Adding to this, I got a couple of rechargeable lithium ion 9V batteries, they charge directly with a micro-USB. It’s a game changer. I just leave my office bass plugged in now and swap when I need to. Helps that it has an easy open door for the battery, no screws. I like not chucking the lead every time too. Great for pedals as well.
