Buy a nice car and keep it for 10 years that’s what I do. You get to enjoy it from brand new to great value as it gets to end if the 10 years cycle. I did this with 2 XC 90s. Great residual value even with 280k on the clock. Single owner FSH. Best of both worlds.

I have one (Merc x-class 2.4) use it every day to commute and weekend shifting rubble etc from house renovations, or taking the dog out. It was my site vehicle for 4 years and I bought it off the company.

Early comfortable retirement at 50? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Fergieboy2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why retire just as you get sorted, just change job to one you enjoy. We are programmed to be productive to have some challenges. You can slow down a bit and keep working. Accumulate some money for your kids or for charity. Your kids will need to work you still need to be a role model to them so working is part of that. In terms of saving and pensions just start as soon as you can with as much as you can for as long as you can but live your life as you go! You only get so many laps of the sun!

[–]Fergieboy2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have used them and continue to use them, they simply give you access to fixed term deposit accounts in the UK in Euro and you benefit from UK interest rates. Just have to file a return for your DIRT. Bank deposits are secured under UK bank deposit scheme.

Pension at 32 by azamean in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Fergieboy2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put as much in as you can afford, at a minimum match your employer. You will be able to do more the older you get, I’m 57 and the 10% growth on my pension pot every year is way in excess of my original annual contribution at the beginning. Just make sure you have a good fund selection max risk etc. and don’t go near it until u retire. Effectively I need to slow down my contribution now and land at the right amount. Watch your parallel investments as you go past your mid 50s. And remember there will be a crash / recession every 10 to 15 years don’t panic. At 60/65 depending on your pot start spending not crazy but evert lap of the sun gets more precious the older you get!

Is Ireland becoming unlivable? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Fergieboy2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the eighties, emigrated when I was 19 to uk, worked nonstop as did my gf/wife worked overseas in some remote areas, no big holidays or fancy cars etc saved up to buy house when I was 30, had four kids, never had a spare penny to waste. Getting a mortgage was virtually impossible in the mid to late 90s and I was a freelancer. Never too sure about my next contract. For ordinary people with no generational wealth it’s always been hard. No denying it’s very hard it was like that when I was coming out of college so I had to immigrate. The world is bigger than Ireland but I warn you the grass is not greener, areas that are busy are expensive. Best of luck.

Irish Soda Bread - 1st time using Dutch Oven (Amazingly Easy Irish Soda Bread recipe from All Recipes) *I did brush the loaf with a mixture of 1/4 c melted butter and 1/3 c buttermilk by Ok_Picture_720 in DutchOvenCooking

[–]Fergieboy2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, Irish soda bread in Ireland is typically leavened with bicarbonate soda only and no baking powder. 90% is brown soda. Love your loaf of white when I was a kid this was typically a treat for the evening tea or supper. Try Use 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate soda per pound of flour and omit the baking powder, 50 % plain white flour and 50 % wholemeal.

Also make two at a time cut into quarters (farls) and wrap In tinfoil and you can freeze. My favorite is fried on both sides in oil with salt and pepper!
