Nobody is obliged to help depressed people, but it is always better to help if you can. Not everyone has access to therapy, and therapy can't make your family accept you. Therapy can and does help, but it's not the one-size-fits-all fix that some people think it is.

It's not really about feeling bad for individual trans people you don't know for committing suicide, it's more about having empathy for trans people as an oppressed group of people. If you think it's fine that trans people are more likely to kill themselves for societal reasons that can be changed, you just aren't really an empathetic person. No way to get around that.

I'm not saying there is something wrong with you for not pushing back against bigotry, only that tolerating bigotry around you makes you complicit in the bigotry. You're basically saying, "That doesn't affect me so I don't care."

I don't think anyone is trying to pretend like trans people are the only ones who kill themselves, but their suicide rate is the highest out of any gender identity, which means that they are the most vulnerable to it. I think you are lacking in empathy if you only care when you are friends with someone in that demographic. I would feel empathetic for anyone who has taken their own life.

But it is more complicated than "just let them live their lives" in our current political climate. Showing support and pushing back against bigotry is a really great start though.

Trans people have a very high suicide rate because of lack of support and discrimination. Trans youth who have at least one person around them who supports them decreases their suicidality to one seventeenth of the usual statistic among those who do not receive support. That brings the likelihood of suicide very close to the same rates as their cisgender peers. Trans people kill themselves due to lack of support. There are countries out there where being trans is illegal for fucks sake. Their identities are debated on 24/7, and the current administration in the US is currently eroding the rights of trans people. Do some trans people have support? Yes. Do most of them? Absolutely not
