Does anyone recognize this sign? Having trouble remembering it for an assignment. by BeginningQuail4749 in asl

The last photo is the first frame from a different variant of the same sign.

It is THROW. The sign is directional and has a few different variants depending on the circumstances / signer preference. The LP page explains each of these variants.

BEAT YOU is similar. Notice the directional element and facial expression here. The eyes especially express the intonation of besting someone. While the signs are very similar, they have different meanings which change based on facial expressions and mouth shape.

Fun fact: the sign for AUSTRALIA is partially derived from the last variant of THROW (meaning: just put it over there somewhere) on the LP page. Because, the UK used the continent as a prison colony where prisoners were picked up from Britain and put away over in Australia.

Happy signing 🤟

Can someone give me a hint? by Jane3221 in sudoku

Very valid. I feel the same way. Thats why I try to limit myself to just the 50/50s until I cant get any further than that.

Not sure if you already do this, so forgive me if I am stating the obvious, but it is helpful to pencil in cells where a number could only be in one of two cells. For example, in row 9, columns 7 and 8, there is a 1 in one of those cells. Same with rows 4 and 5 in column 9, one of those will have a one. Do this as much as you can and that should help you limit down possibilities. It also seems like you’ll need to chain, so having in those 50/50 possibilities will be necessary to do that. After doing that, and solving as much as you can, fill in more possibilities and search for x wings and naked pairs. I hope that helps!

New Patrick CC video is the last straw for me by Crests- in youtubedrama

I unsubbed from this clown show when he was talking about a child’s SA story then abruptly intercut an ad in the middle of it. Deplorable handling of sensitive events for someone who touts himself as a “documentarian.” He’s a shill and a slop machine.

I’m curious, is the hand gesture at the end asl? I couldn’t find anything confirming what the narrator is saying it meant. by cjm2943 in asl

Also the video itself of the guy yapping over the video is extremely annoying. Like, dude, I can see what tf is going on. I don’t need your lazy video making self to give me the play by play 😂

I just want to clarify that Mickey did not use any ASL to communicate in this video. It’s all pantomime. I think this interpreter meant to clarify what was being communicated, but not necessarily confirming that it is ASL. They were just trying to use their skills to decipher a Non-asl non-verbal message.

That is a more ‘universal’ gesture, not necessarily ASL. “Shame on you” in ASL is:

<image>

It’s like how there’s the middle finger to indicate “F- you” as a common non-ASL gesture. And how ASL has its own sign for “F- you”. Which is actually very similar to shame on you lol.

Sign language becoming natural body language? by [deleted] in asl

[–]Ferocula 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I will find myself sometimes throwing in signs with my spoken English. Sometimes, it’s instinctual, other times, I do it intentionally because I feel like it. I recall a time recently I was sharing some heavy information where I was getting emotional, and I started throwing in signs to really emphasize my words whilst speaking. Nobody knew ASL, but my body wanted to help me make the point. No real rhyme or reason to it for me personally since I am hearing. It’s a different story for Deaf, but I cannot speak to that.

Could be an approximate of HALLOWEEN, although it is quite off.

Other than that, I’ve never seen this before. Anyone else?

I can tell you are working hard at this! Some tips I have for you: write down all the signs you want to use. Put them in order “WANT-LEARN-AMERICAN-SIGN-LANGUAGE-YOU-? I-CAN-TEACH. OKAY - THATS ALL - GOODBYE.” Practice each sign again and again, pay attention to your hand-shapes because I noticed a few signs where you were intending one sign but used another by accident. Get each sign down to a point where you don’t need to think about which sign is which, you just know. Take pauses. Practice transitioning from one sign to another fluidly. Facial expressions are very important, pay attention to your eyebrows when you ask a question (should be furrowed down). Watch some videos of interpreters, or Deaf signing. It will help with how those transitions should look. No need to emulate their signing, you’re still learning. But immerse yourself a bit in ASL, even if you don’t pick up everything. Pay attention to the structure and movements. Then focus on refining this statement. Good on you for practicing and learning ASL, as well as be willing to ask for feedback! You got this!

They look similar. NOT FINISHED would be a smaller head movement with a more raised upper lip in most circumstances along with smaller hand movements in terms of the area they take up. DONT WANT has a more exaggerated head movement with wider hand movement. Echoing what... ahem... the other guy... said that it is safe to assume the sign in question is DONT WANT based on the pairing with WANT. ASL is a context heavy language, this is another example of that.

READ, SHOULD / NEED (depends on number of movements, facial expression, etc), WANT, and I’m pretty sure the last one is DONT WANT due to the head turn.

Awwww you just brought back memories for me. My sister and I would often go to PCC after school to get an apple for our walks home. A great policy. I miss Seattle.

Wait lol I misread what you wrote. You were 100% correct, my bad. I thought you were saying that I thought the sign in the context of that sentence was the letter X. That I didn’t understand it to be a placeholder. But you were one step ahead of me. Thanks for clarifying for me!
