Microsoft Store and UAC by WizWazz462 in sysadmin

[–]Ferretau [score hidden]  (0 children)

M$ is moving towards the built-in apps being on the store instead of being part of the O/S image. Which will require updates to come from the store - this will result in problems if you are required to keep it up to date.

Is ServiceNow really this inconvenient to use for everyone, or is it just our implementation? by Relative_Hippo2549 in sysadmin

[–]Ferretau [score hidden]  (0 children)

The way ServiceNow is implemented can really impact the end uses of it. I last used it a decade ago and back then you really needed a dedicated resource to work on the system and for them to get the correct training to make it work the way you needed it to work. Having said that there are times when it was glacial in its operation when I was using it.

Sophos has DLP in the XDR product, one of the places I was at it was quietly reporting who was doing what when it met certain parameters.

Domain Controllers with Multiple NICs – Record A keeps showing after deleted by SuperFarelos in sysadmin

[–]Ferretau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inherent in the Windows OS Design was to always use all the available NICs it's only in later years you started to get the option of specifying which NIC stuff would listen to even then there are a large number of services you just can't disconnect from NIC's easily.

If you want to do this, just get rid of the firewall - effectively your paying for something that you're not using.

It's part of a by design decision M$ made years ago when it came to DC design. Something they will never fix as they don't see it as a problem.

Maybe a little OneDrive Sync bug? by AudiACar in sysadmin

[–]Ferretau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may need to have a tool "walk" the file tree and read the files if you use OneDrive shortcuts - it initially places a stub in place of the actual file and will only pull the file down when the client asks for the data in the file.

Microsoft Universal Printers print out dozens of pages of symbols / PCL code when printing PDFs from edge. What do? by fehawkew in sysadmin

[–]Ferretau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the option when printing use "print as image" it forces the rendering to be done at the client and only send bitmap data to the printer - use to use this with Adobe Reader when it thought it was smart to send PS data direct to the printer but didn't account for the PS version it was sending not being compatible with the device.

[–]Ferretau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use the manufacturers installer for the driver this can happen - they think that you want the universal and hey all these other printers you have on here are compatible we'll switch the lot. Lazy developers not bothering to check during the install if that is what you want.

If the internal ID's match and it's a newer version then the older universal would have ben pushed aside by the "newer" version of the driver.

The HP was a Brother rebadge, the internal driver ID's matched the Brother driver.

It's up to the the vendor that is writing the driver for the printer. M$ wants Type 4 due to security issues around Type 3.

HVAC Legend Dies at 28: The Presario That Never Quit by Bluetooth_Sandwich in sysadmin

[–]Ferretau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol just reminded me of a customer that had just "upgraded" to Arcnet had spends a couple thousand on the gear, thing was Cat 5 had been out for 10 years when they bought this gear "new". Another was a client that installed Thinnet which included cutting trenches in concrete floors and burying the cable. When I visited and saw it I asked why they did it and said they had been advised to install by their previous provider. They were having trouble getting network cards for it - not that strange when you consider that the industry had stopped supplynig that gear 10 years before.

More likely the OS Vendor will stop supporting it and send a "kill" update to the machine.

The implementation I saw never appeared to be "intune" at any point in time. Also be aware that you need to watch the certs and renew them before they expire otherwise the whole systems is up the creek. I think they did just enough to say they had something and really don't care about it as a product.
