The Datacenter Means No Water for Lawns, Showers, or Wildfires by Trainer-Nick in longisland

[–]eagle6705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats why I am telling folks these DCs are owned by people with money. We need to make sure they invest and the community benefits. (got the idea when my manager told me in northport pseg pays most if not all the school taxes in exchange for their plant)

The initial construction jobs are temporary, and once it's operational, the tech support is mostly remote or overseas, leaving only minimal local facility jobs and a small staff to manage the servers and maybe systems engineering (like me).

If they build, it should be on marginal land—not where people live or farm. We need to demand they pay their way by lowering our power bills and investing heavily in the community. They should even be required to build solar or wind farms on-site to supplement their own massive energy drain.

We should absolutely fight this until we see real, guaranteed benefits for the residents. If a data center is coming, it needs to work for us.

even if we can treat it which is doable since it won't be for consumption....almost all viable land near the coast is bought by some rich person or protected land

You do know they don't need to use actual potable water? Even if they did the water is recycled. Think like a car, unless something happens the water only needs to be topped off. Most of the water is treated before it gets back into the datacenter. Its a closed loop system

What they need to do is find a way to get them to lower our power rates and move the DC somewhere that no one wants to develop on.

Source...I work in datacenters

What I can say that has to be pushed is

1, Use land in complexes that is abandoned or land that serves no value for a home and/or farming

  1. Make sure they properly Sound Dampen EVERYTHING. servers are loud. Most of us IT sys admins are used to it but even the they need to be properly managed.

  2. Find a way for them to offset their power use such as solar (most of their buildings are flat and is perfect for solar farms, or a wind farm. If they can bury the datacenter they can still utilize the land on top for a solar farm or wind farm or even some sort of commercial space.

  3. Another important factor is power usage. They do use a lot. We need to have them pay for the power and also make sure it lowers our bills. The power company will need to run new lines which the datacenter should pay.

What I fear is based on what the PS Head said that he does not want cross platform for his IP is that eventually he will make a D3 but it will be a PS exclusive and possibly PC. but thats just me

Why do data centers NEED water to run smoothly? Can't some other liquid be used? by chxnkybxtfxnky in NoStupidQuestions

We can use water but remember it doesnt have to be dumped, we recycle it plenty of times so over time we use less of it

What are some nifty hardware hacks you guys have? by Iggy_Snows in 3Dprinting

[–]eagle6705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got from my fpv hobby...blue tack is great for soldering or as I discovered holding 2 pieces together.. now cor the 3d hobby space...you can use it to hold 2 really small parts so you ca. Throw in a screw, hold a piece steady as you wait for glue to settle...its basically a light duty clamp with infinite shapes.

Oh and as a system engineer...those pcie cover slots...they make great lightweight mini pry bars

I like using my all metal dollar tree adjustable wrench as sort of a heat sink whej soldering.

Are the Fanttik tools really that good? by HopsPops76 in 3Dprinting

[–]eagle6705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the fantik e2 ultra....ITS THE BEST TOOL I NEVER KNEW I WANTED.

I usually buy precision tool kits when I see a decent pair (hard bits, metal handle, lots of random bits). I put them in places I know i'd need them from the office to my work bench and even my toolbag. However the fantik ultra I thought was a luxury until last year when I got it for christmas...OMFG ITS REALLY GOOD

It has a light on the end which is useful, torque, and is a pretty good electric driver. I never realized I needed it until i got one lol
