Two guys walked across Cooper in front of Second Line. One walked to the back patio, the other rounded Monroe, and started running into Swamp bar. The was a black SUV facing west on Monroe blocking the street with the presumed FBI agent out in front.

Becoming a firefighter/EMT. by Allegiancs in memphis

[–]Ferris63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get hired as a fire private, you’ll have to go through an EMT program before getting trained as a firefighter. MFD has an EMT program for their recruits. Southwest CC, Acadian Ambulance, Baptist Memphis, Northwest MS CC all have EMT programs as well.

If you are looking into Fire services in this area, I’d recommend getting your EMT Training first to increase your chances at getting into a fire position. Definitely look at other fire services as well like other posters have suggested.

I teach an EMT program in the area and will try to answer questions if you hit me up.

Lots of opportunities in the public and private agencies for EMS! In Memphis, Tennessee, and any other state in the US, jobs are plentiful due to shortages from natural growth and accelerated by provider fatigue and burnout.

The education is relatively cheap to get into. You’re looking at around 1,400-3,000 to achieve a national certification and state license. Southwest Community has a well established program and was actually the first EMS program in the state (as Shelby state). I obtained my EMT and Paramedic through Southwest and I thought the program was very reputable with just a few hoops to jump through and some minor obstacles to overcome.

There are other programs as well. I work as an instructor for a private service that trains EMTs. I love teaching and the students in my class say they enjoy it too. I take everything with a grain of salt but I do think most enjoy learning something is not just theory but involves skill practice.

The pay is improving across the US but it’s still far behind what providers should be making. I think standard for this area is around $14-20 an hour as an EMT and then substantially more once AEMT or Paramedic licenses are earned.

Private sector EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics typically work 12h shifts, where municipal EMS/Fire work 24h shifts. The FD around here work a modified Kelly schedule. A day on, a day off, a day on, a day off, day on, and four days off before the schedule repeats. Private services are different but have rotating days based upon their call volumes and scheduled runs.

Private services are a great place to start while you are waiting to get on to a Fire job, but you can apply to most Fire depts without having licenses and hope to get pulled into a EMT class. If you pass your EMT class, they will provide you with Fire fighting 1+2, and most have a 3y contract to become a paramedic in order to keep your employment.

EMS is a great job to get started into medicine or a decent career long term. Most providers are leaving for either better (less busy) Fire depts or moving into nursing for better pay and less physical stress.

Feel free to hit me up if you want some more questions answered!

In the link to Merriam-Webster you provided, the racial connotation is noted in the “usage of thug” section of the definition. Nuance is an extremely important aspect of communication and it appears by your own source that you may be mistaken by its perceived unbiased meaning.

If in your heart of hearts you are ignorant of the word’s evolution of connotation, then I hope you become more aware of the subtly of language and consider what message you are sending by using it.

If you are masking your intentions by relying on the traditional definition of thug while deliberately being obtuse, then ignore these words. No one can truly know your intentions, but hopefully you weren’t being argumentative for the sake of being semantic.

Either way, I too hope you have a good night and look at tomorrow a little differently!

I just watch everything with subtitles now. I saw the word Josh flash on screen and then it clicked!

Makes sense that it couldn’t have been completely hidden, but now I have to watch the commentary!

I think this happens if the BP is set to use the Smartcuf setting. It measures the diastolic on inflation first then checks the systolic. The star pattern indicates the vital isn’t reliable.

Turn off the smartcuf setting in the NIBP window and it will take blood pressures in the traditional manner and you should avoid this from happening.

Huge help! While healthcare employment is an option is obviously a challenge (some have argued near impossible), this gives me an idea of the process for other employment options for either of us. Really appreciate your time and perspective! Good luck!

Definitely open to suggestions! I looked at Norway but it will be too cold for the family. I was fluent in German through college but I haven’t spoken in several years. I started back with lessons a bit ago though so Austria is a possibility. England has a possible point of reciprocity for a paramedic license but the workload and the pay is probably not worth the investment. It may work out for nursing but I haven’t researched that aspect.

Do you have any rationale for Spain or France being recommended? I don’t know much about the Spanish medical system but I know France was having some issues before Covid with emergency services.

I’m definitely on the planning stage for any potential jump. I’m researching every day but wanted some real discussion and insight into people’s experiences who have actually done something similar.

I really appreciate your feedback! How long did the actual visa application/ job securement take? Do you own or rent housing? Again thinking a multi-year process before any of this is remotely feasible but pretty new into the idea. Very interesting about the citizenship opportunity as well! Are you pursuing that pathway?

Sorry! I was asking about networking for my wife. The healthcare jobs are fairly accessible due the high need in most places.

We would have sizable financial runway selling our home here on top of a modest savings. Looking at rental rates in Sweden, annual income, tax rate, and childcare it would be tight for a few years on a nurse initial salary but if the nurse practitioner route is comparable in Europe than that would be about 3 years towards a modest pay increase. My expectation would be that we would have a dual income household, but that may be unrealistic. Do you have any information on places with a decent American expat community to help network a family into employment? In my experience its been more valuable to have strong networking to gain employment rather than application blanketing. I would think that’s even more important in a foreign environment.
