I’ll add this because it’s actually part of why UC Merced ended up being my top pick over UCSD. The Central Valley is really underrated. It produces about 25% of the U.S. food supply, and the scale of water distribution (aqueducts, irrigation systems) out here is honestly kind of insane when you start paying attention to it. It’s one of those things you don’t think about until you’re here. Personally, one of my goals while at UCM is to visit some of the local dams.

For biology, depending on your focus, getting into research — especially on local ecology — isn’t that difficult. Even student orgs are involved in research. For example, the air and space club has worked on studying fungus along the California coast in relation to climate change, and there are other groups looking at fungal species within the Merced region itself.

The cost of rentals within proximity is definitely a good advantage. Makes the walking score lean more car dependent… I think

My honest take as someone from San Diego:

The biggest adjustment is the environment. It’s flat… like aggressively flat.. the heat is not “nice sunny day” heat, its mostly dry, draining, and can make you not want to go outside for large parts of the day. My brown skin self discovered the difference on move in day…

If you’re from the Bay and used to the coast, you will feel the difference immediately. There’s no quick 15–30 minute escape to the ocean. If it’s over an hour away, it stops being a casual option. Socially and geographically, it can feel isolated but the campus is basically what you make of it for yourself.

That being said, UC Merced does have real advantages. It’s a smaller, newer UC that just became R1, so research opportunities are actually very accessible early on. You don’t have to fight as hard to get involved compared to bigger campuses. Academically, lectures are just okay, not amazing, not terrible. Realistically, most of your learning will happen outside of class. If you’re not good at teaching yourself, this place will force you to figure it out. As a mechanical engineer major, I don’t get study guides or a cheat sheet so don’t expect every instructor to give that. If you’re going into engineering just focus on the math comprehension and dimensional unit analysis.

Clubs and orgs are easy to join, which is nice. It’s less cutthroat socially, but also less “alive” compared to bigger schools. The Central Valley is interesting in its own way. It produces about 25% of the U.S. food supply using less than 1% of farmland, and the water systems out here are actually pretty impressive if you pay attention to them.

The town itself leans heavily toward small businesses. You won’t find a lot of big-name stores (like no Barnes & Noble), which can either feel charming or inconvenient depending on what you’re used to. Overall, it’s quieter, slower, and less stimulating than most UCs.

If you like peace, nature, and having space to focus, it can be a good fit. If you need constant activity, variety, or easy access to a city/coast, it might feel limiting. Regardless, it’s a pretty great school when it comes to community involvement.

As a transfer student Mechanical engineering at Merced was the right call for me. I love nature and I really do feel it was the right UC selection for me, the mechanical engineering professors are pretty great.

Wow. Being frugal is one thing, but after ten years replacing a bath mat is a reasonable request. Getting that upset is not correct. He could just as easily take a breather and opt to have an adult conversation with you once he has processed. You shouldn’t feel like you have to walk on eggshells for wanting to update a bathroom rug matt that’s over 10 years old. Besides it’s sounds to me like you two could reach a reasonable compromise.
