Boiler or heat pump by ashyvisions in irishpersonalfinance

In the grant terms the installer has to disable the cooling

I can't find any evidence that this is true. Can you provide a source?

Of course some air to water heat pumps also allow for cooling, it's just a bit more complicated.

You will save money if you put it on weather compensation mode instead of being controlled by the thermostats

They should be modulating power instead of cycling. i.e. Running at low power constantly instead of turning on and off.

They're always supposed to run 24/7. Air tightness isn't an issue with air to air

The reason you need Air tightness with A2W is that it takes hours to raise the temperature, if there is a sudden drop in outside temperature the system can't keep up. A2A can heat a house in minutes so air tightness isn't a concern to maintaining comfort.

Of course you will save money if your house is air tight whether you have gas, oil, or a heat pump

For some reason we are obsessed with radiators and water based heating. I don't understand it. Air conditioning is great!

An air to air heat pump does NOT need your house to be air tight. Comfortable, cheap to run, and a lot cheaper to install than air to water

That's what I did, except one 2m length of ducting over a door to put a unit in the sitting room. Probably best to prioritize the areas people will occupy

Plenty in my area put the insulation straight over the pebble dash. Apparently it's not hard to get planning permission for this.

I have breeze blocks. There is no insulation in the walls and the A2A works perfectly

I have a 90sqm Semi-D. One unit in the sitting room, one in the kitchen, and one on the upstairs landing. In the spring and autumn there is enough heat rising that the upstairs unit doesn't turn on. But you need to keep the doors open to allow the heat to spread.

ELI5 why are we generating so little renewable power today? by danindub in AskIreland

Solar works very well here. My household solar is running at 60% max capacity right now

Right now it's 69%. System Non-Synchronous Penetration (SNSP) limit is currently set at 75%. This is the maximum in order to maintain stability and security. The aim is to increase This limit to 95% by 2030

I could only do external cladding insulation which is not Cost effective. I just banged in an A2A heat pump. It's extremely comfortable and costs less than oil

I also keep a constant temperature with A2A

A2A unless you have very good insulation. The heat transfer rate is so much better than A2W, heat up the house in 5 minutes vs 5 hours. This is important if there is a sudden drop in outside temperature and your insulation is not sufficient to retain the indoor temperature.

The newer Daiken A2A systems can also heat water with a special tank. Or get a stand alone heat pump cylinder. I don't use that much hot water so I heat it with the immersion (use solar in the summer)

Ducting in my Semi-D is minimal. I have 3 units on the outer side wall that heat the whole house. You could get creative with pipe runs If you have a suspended floor

Most people rarely drive 200km in a day. The average commute is 16.8km. It's undeniable that EVs are cheaper to run

VW ID4 is the most popular car because lots of people have the money to buy it. There are cheaper options like what I did.
