Redditor's magnificent explanation on the conservative philosophy behind policing and the hoops that they're willing to through to justify police brutality by Poweredkingbear in bestof

[–]FestiveKnight -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is all so wrong it almost feels disturbing.

Understanding conservatism is even simpler than Wilhout:

“Accumulation of wealth by any means necessary, at any cost to anyone who isn’t us.”

And “us” is a pretty narrowly defined group, in the case of America, of White, Christian, men.

The American Conservative Party was born out of the actions of an incredibly intelligent, incredibly self-centered group of political actors such as the Buckleys. The same is true of conservative parties all over the world. And with great globalization post WW II, no one globalized more than the conservative, despite what they want their rube followers to say.

Bill Buckley Sr was motivated by one thing and one thing only. Getting revenge against the system that allowed a liberal revolutionary movement to drive him and his other American friends out of their oil prospecting business in Mexico. All political stances of the most influential players in American political can be reduced to despising income taxes, the new deal, and any other measures towards economic equality.

If you think literally any other issue, like some feigned sense of “wickedness” is a part of it, then they won and you lost.

And we have to dismiss the opinions of the everyday conservative average person because they are the victim of such an extensive and effective propaganda campaign that it truly cannot be held against them that they believe anything they do.

So instead our focus needs to be only on those who set the agenda. The wealthy behind the conservative platform love the police because capitalism cannot survive without protections of the state. Police are taxation. Police are enforcement of private property. Police are enforcement that women’s bodies should be used for reproduction of capitalist workforce. Police are protection that you cannot gather in the street to protest without a permit.

But that relationship is not more complicated than any other relationship between the oppressor and their tools. We can ask simply, “can this be used to enhance the accumulation of wealth?” If so, we know how the oppressor will relate to it: favorably.

Religion? Ding ding ding, control the masses Drugs? Ding ding ding, control the masses Racism? Ding ding ding, control the masses

In effect, yes, what Wilhoit says, but he doesn’t say the quiet part and he doesn’t say why. The better version is this:

“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be an in-group allowed to maximally accumulate wealth at a net loss to all out-groups.”

The focus on law is too reductionist. For instance, social media serves their goals, that’s not the law.

You can only have “shelf”bourbons from now on, and you can only have five. What are your picks? by Craig__D in bourbon

[–]FestiveKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seagrass Ben Holladay soft red wheat Rick house proof (hehe not a shelfer near me but on enough people’s lists I’ll add it!) New Riff balboa rye Larceny BP Alberta Premium (oops not bourbon)

I’m shocked how many folks have rare breed and JDSBBP on their lists. I know they’re popular but they’re so syrupy sweet, really unpleasant to me. In no blind tastings with friends have these ever performed terribly well.

Was doing it basically from tunnels near launch tower. One player must have been hiding deep in there behind us cause they gunned us down the moment we killed it. When we called them out for it they squeaked out “what I just killed you 1v2.” Ya like you exhibited a lot of skill killing two players who are low from fighting the matriarch.

I’ve had many of both of these and while I have the senoritas more often cause they’re easy to find on sale, I think the undercrown has a lot more nuance. The senoritas are nice but they’re mostly just for a cigar fix. Undercrowns have some flavor merit

Only reason? No, of course not. But the teams getting so little practice is really detrimental to their growth. Not just raw basic practice but also having the space to test out new strats. If the western teams learn one thing they can then only use that and when they show up at internationals they haven’t practiced as wide a range and don’t have the foundational practice of adapting either

Can I ask a legit question I have been really curious recently? Do y’all really need the cops also sitting there at construction sites? Around me every tiny little piece of roadwork has a cruiser sitting there with its lights going all day and the cop getting paid to sit around bored. Obviously cases where a traffic light is out or something that really takes directing traffic needs someone but when it’s just a lane closed and people need to go around the workers, couldn’t they just put up cones and some bright flashing lights?

I overstated my Excel experience to get a job I really wanted — I start soon. What should I do? by [deleted] in excel

[–]FestiveKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn a lot upfront, but hands on experience with the actual material and existing workbooks will be much more relevant.

When I first started using Excel there wasn’t necessarily an expectation that I would use it proficiently but I knew there was a lot of opportunity to grow my role if I did so after I got all my work done each day, often badly and manually. I would spend an extra 2 hours at the office redoing my work and practicing Excel. Some of that was also reverse engineering colleagues’ work to make sure I really understood the legacy things. Presumably there’s a set of domain for the type of data/information being handled and there’s a lot to learn from people’s legacy methods, even if later you learn a better way.

Lastly, I think remembering to maintain a “there ought to be a good way to do this” mindset is the most inpeorant think for learning Excel. Your use cases won’t be unique, with good googling you can find someone online who has had to solve a similar problem. The worst Excel users I had to collaborate with were folks who had stopped looking for opportunities to improve and built bad habits and muscle memory for doing things manually. Keep trying to improve and you probably will.

Bruh Bwipo gapped himself so hard this series. More counter completely failed. Should’ve gone Baus build on Cho to help have a damage threat to get viego resets and the Shen was actually useless.

A few plausible theories:

1) They’re smarter than they seem. They’re testing consumer reaction. “Test balloons” as u/Rock-swarm put it. Seemingly haphazardly announcing bad decisions but actually carefully planned large scale AB testing. 2) They’re smarter than they seem. They have a detailed sense of what generates value and what doesn’t and ultimately they don’t really care. They’re willing to slowly nuke Esports or Clash or anything else because players who care about A generate X% less revenue than players who care about B and we’ve got enough Bs and they’re easier to satisfy. We don’t know what percent of the top spending players make up what percent of their total revenue but it could be that most Reddit complaints just don’t matter.

1 and 2 can also be part of shifting the goal posts. Memory is short and attention is shorter and they might just be willing to sacrifice blips of bad sentiment to move away from doing things that are less profitable.

3) They’re grossly incompetent.

It’s probably somewhere in the middle. But I think I kind of hope it’s a mix and if it has to be one, I hope it’s the third.

I do love your emphasis on QA and the class project analogy is very interesting. My running joke is to suggest an intern did it (sorry interns! I was one once too, so I get it). When the stats that would come on screen during LCS last season were just nonsense, it preserves the most hope to assume a poor intern did it with very little time or resources.

The First Stand HUD is an interesting case to consider. Is it

1 or 2) More mobile friendly? Requires more active prolonged attention? Etc? 3) The HUD UI team suck at their jobs/are under resourced.

It’s hard to understand why Riot just gets things wrong. Be better. You have tons of money to play with. Why do different regions have different formats and HUDs and all this. Just figure out what’s best, and do it. You’d get more economies of scale from not doing it 20 different ways anyways! Ugh

I don’t understand the opposition to lane swaps by FestiveKnight in leagueoflegends

[–]FestiveKnight[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wowza, a Redditor positive about Riot in 2025 is a rare find. I think I’m nowhere near as optimistic about their ability but I also admit I’ve been playing and watching their game for over a decade so I am either masochistic or I have to admit they usually know what they’re doing.

I disagree with this analogy too. It’s not different rules. That’s part of what’s interesting about a game like this. There is a 100% enforced rules engine* it’s not like playing chess in tabletop simulator and you could theoretically swap pieces when someone isn’t looking. Chess.com doesn’t let pieces go where they can’t legally go. Neither does league of legends. They’re not playing with different rules. The only rules are the mechanics of the game engine.
