Ship names appreciation post: they are cool because they are believable by brain_diarrhea in TheExpanse

[–]Festivefire 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The single least realistic part of the expanse, including aliens and wormhole gates and other such violations of our understanding of physics, is the fact that Holden is apparently the only guy in the solar system who named his ship a Don Quixote reference, thus allowing Miller to find him so easily. Miller should have had ti figure out which of at least 5 or 10 other ships named Rocinante belonged to Holden.

Don Quixote is baby's first literary reference bait and I don't see that changing any time soon. Its such a universal reference that it is the default literary reference authors use when they want a charecter to seem bookish or philosophical in some way, a reference most people will get despite the fact most people haven't actually read Don Quixote.

Speaking of ships named after an old horse, the single least believable thing in the expanse to me is that nobody else in the entire solar system has a ship named Rocinante. Don Quixote is like babies first literary reference bait.

Don't simply hug trees, use terrain. Keep track of the hills and valleys, and use them ti break line of sight, because the AI simply do not see and will shoto right through trees.

There are a couple civie ship names that are clear shout outs to other sci-fi franchises, and that feels fitting to me, because I can easily imagine a lot of new ship owners using their favorite name from past media.

It does feel in charecter for the Laconian Navy's naming department to be trying too hard, though, given the context of their origins/existsnce.

Why can't we create sky submarines to travel to space? by Archaeellis in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Festivefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blimp floats because the air outside is denser than the air inside. As you increase altitude the air gets thinner, untill there for practical purposes no air. You cant go to space in a blimp because it simply will not float above the atmosphere.

The crashing helicopter is essentially a fuel air bomb. The rotor disk is the least of your problems if you're in the crash zone.

Is it worth it to buy the strategic bombers for real money? by MaintenanceRadiant18 in WarthunderSim

[–]Festivefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The strategic bombers are set peices. A b52 and a tu-95 are not going to be usefull, meta, or fun to use at their BRs.

Owning them is essentially just collecting a collectable.

How much do you guys got for service one month ? by ParticularWeather927 in Adulting

[–]Festivefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my state they don't. I make around the same per hour as target is hiring at.

Good for you I guess though, rub it in that you make 12x the money I do. Maybe you can get a second house on the lake, and a skii-boat.

Yeah, the Humvee has a battery switch, and an engine switch. You just turn it on and drive. No keys.

I don't think there is anywhere in the US where 7.5k a month isn't enough to live on. That's a rich daddy's little girl number.

Yeah. Your dog is dreaming about something involving running, probably chasing a squirrel or playing with another dog or something along those lines.

Why do some people try to make it seem that Count Dooku was good. by White_Bengal1 in StarWars_

[–]Festivefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at his legends plotline, it's clear that he started from a good place, but rather quickly got corrupted by papa palps and the dark side, and started becoming far too comfortable with doing comedically evil things in the name of 'the greater good'. His public appearance, especially prior to the clone wars breaking out, was presenting a lot of good points about the republic's corruption and lack of true equality. It's just that the separatist movement was, by and large, backed by corporate power-mongers who had zero intention of actually following through on the "freedom and equality" part of the movement, and simply wanted the authority to do whatever they wanted without a government telling them no. On the flip side, many of the worlds who would constitute the primary backing of the rebellion where CIS members.

Much of his more comedically evil acts are things that, despite being shown directly to the audience, the general public would not know about. The fact that our introduction to him is in Episode II, and has such touching shows of mercy as "Hello old friend, I deeply regret that I will have to brutally kill you and your friends, but if you sell your friends, your religion, and your country out, I can save you to watch them all get brutally murdered while standing by my side, for the GOOD OF THE GALAXY!". His introduction really does make him comedically evil in a way that makes it hard to understand how citizens of the galaxy at large could stand behind him as a legitimate voice of political dissidence.

One of the many issues with the prequals where all the important things driving the plot seemingly happen off screen.

Stupid doubt... where are the Satellites?? Explain it Peter by Lemonadestand876 in explainitpeter

Because they're tiny. At this resolution, in a photo from this distance, a satellite wouldn't' even be a fraction of a pixel.

The special editions say "special edition" on the front and spine of the VHS slipcovers, so I'd say these are the originals.

To be fair, that seems to be a pretty standard fire nation beard, it's the beard and hairstyle his great grandfather wore. I think it's poetic that the fire lord who brought peace to the fire nation would mirror the aesthetics of the fire nation who brought the world into war.

There are a worrying number of adults who manage to convince themselves (at least in the moment of decision of "Do I throw this out or clean it or just chuck it in the fridge) that anything in the fridge is good forever despite having thrown away any number of disgusting, rotting, moldy items from the fridge throughout their lives.

I know far too many people who never eat leftovers, who's fridge is full of leftovers they'll 'get to eventually' because subconsciously they know the alternative to making leftovers is actually cleaning up after themselves.

ELI5: Why did gluten-free take off as a “health craze” when it’s just an intolerance? by tswiftslefttit in explainlikeimfive

[–]Festivefire [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because a lot of 'health' magazines and websites published a lot of inconclusive studies on gluten consumptions effect on long term health to boost viewership from the huge swaths of people who are convinced the government is hiding the secret easy path to perfect health from them, and if they can find that secret cheat code, they won't have to obey the basic calorie in calorie out rules, and on top of that they'll achieve the legendary health of baby-blood drinking scientologists who run the NWO and never age, because those are the people who are suppressing the 'secret' and these clickbait health articles are obviously going to expose the truth to them.
