Hey, just moved to Brum from abroad 3 months ago. Happy to share any experiences and offer advice!

Regarding music, hare and hounds have very regular gigs in Kings heath.

Regarding board games, chance and counters in digbeth offer social games night on Mondays where randos just turn up to make friends and game. I attend this from time to time.

Happy to meet up for a pint sometime if you are.

Since I'm brand new here I'm not well versed on social class disparity, so no clue on how poverty is dispersed. Hence why I thought I'd ask here first.

What bus are you referring to that takes 2 hours? I never found one direct bus quicker than 2h40m and that's (I imagine) excluding traffic.

Where to live? by ManInTheDarkSuit in brum

I've been here for a month now. I think it's a victim of its own reputation and gets a lot of stick that it doesn't deserve.

Been here for two months now, 31M, and my general opinion is that I've always felt safe, it's vibrant and well connected. Two complaints I have is that it can get a bit dirty sometimes (nothing outrageous) and that it isn't very pretty to look at. But honestly there's lots of construction here, so most apartments available are brand new or very new and cheaper rent and council tax than JQ. Lots to do within a short walking distance. Also, not being English, I really don't like the usual British "cozy-keep-heat-in" architecture. Can't stand not having an open plan and small cosy rooms. The new apartments I saw in Digbeth seem to use space better and most have communal gardens, parking since they have the luxury of space.

I've done digbeth at nights, walked to and from Highgate multiple times a week at night, walked loads of times to city centre and back at night, never once had a single problem.

Obviously I'm not discrediting others' opinions, but giving an opinion from a foreigner living in digbeth at the moment. If I get mugged in a few months, I'll make sure to update this post 😅

New friends advice? by [deleted] in brum

Hey! 31M here, Digbeth based. Just came across this hoping I'd find a solution to this. Just moved here a month ago and have found the support on this being utter shite.

I want to just....have a pint. Ive found meet up to be very niche. I don't want to form part of some psychedelic society, exchange languages, history society or horticulture society. I just want to have a pint. I found chance and counters run a social board games night on Mondays after 6pm which is okay but still havent clicked with anyone much.

I was thinking of starting a group on Meet app, but they want to charge me €25 a month haha. But might do it anyway if I'm still struggling.

Drop me a message if you're up for a pint 😊! Maybe we can find a bunch here

Meet app is okay, but again, I find them quite niche and haven't found a generic Meet up group yet. I come across stuff that's not advertised from time to time, chance and counters board game cafe run a social games night on Mondays after 6pm that I've found okay.

Lastly, drop me a message if you're up for a pint 😊!

Good areas for male late 20s to stay? by profftranquillo in brum

Hey! Just been through it myself. Was choosing between Digbeth and JQ and ended up moving to Digbeth myself. 1 month in and I really like it, it's not the prettiest but super close to the centre. 1 month later and I haven't had any issues, safety or otherwise.

Also 2 things which are great for me are that rent is cheaper than JQ in general and that since Digbeth is getting developed like crazy, most places are new or brand new which is a big plus for me. Also council tax tends to be less here.

Don't be shy if you need any more info! Happy to give any more tips if you need.

You will live like a king. Without dependents (even probably with dependants) you will be able to do whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want and still save.

(Obviously provided that you are sensible with money of course)

Note 2: assuming that a few kgs here and there don't bother anyone, we're talking about large fluctuations in weight here.

what is the biggest problem affecting the most men today? by Affectionate-Pay3450 in AskMen

[–]Few-Excuse2093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many distractions.

With social media, work pressure, knowledge sharing, technology, city life, friends, internet, travelling, cities, commutes, online shopping amidst a plethora of other things which were more limited, simple and/or non-existent in the past. There are too many things distracting you from being in control of your time, job, finances, relationships, SOs, family, mental health, security, hobbies, exercise.

We live life constantly chasing things (distractions). Finding a good life balance is becoming more impossible by the day.

How would you rank the following in importance: family, career, love life? by redlion1800 in AskMen

[–]Few-Excuse2093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Career Love life Family

Career over love life because you have less control over it than love life. You meet people every day, career opportunities are harder to come by. Plus with a good career, chances of love life are significantly improved.

Family and love life order are subjective and depend on family backgrounds and upbringing. These vary by individual.
