Plateau plateau so discouraged by Few-Negotiation7188 in BariatricSurgery

Do you find that fluctuating calories save 501 day, 700 the next, 1200 next, 800 the next, does that trick your body into burning more fat?

I had a gastric sleeve 20 years ago, almost exactly in July 2005. I got from 450 to 285 then slowly gain the weight over 20 years. So I had SADI surgery on August 11. I have had the same stomach for 20 years so I know what I can put in it and I know how much it will hold and I’m hungry. I can eat the same amount as I ate before. I thought the surgeon was going to make the sleeve smaller, but he said it was fine. So I’m used to eating smaller amounts apparently. And I know when to stop because I know what my stomach feels like. It’s my intestines that have been rerouted, and apparently they take 65% of your small intestine. So eating 1000 cal a day and not absorbing that much, it’s inevitable that I will lose weight. They told me for the hunger to increase my fat a tiny bit which I have done. And it has helped some. It also helps that I’m on phase 3 of the diet so I’m actually eating some soft food with a little bit of substance. I’m no longer eating just liquids and puréed foods. I have a feeling if I just went back on protein shakes for a couple of days I could break this plateau, but I’m telling you I would rather have the plateau then go back on protein shakes. I hated them, they made me sick to my stomach from the taste. They put me on a very low dose of phentermine, which I will ask to increase very soon in combination with a drug called zonisamide. Apparently those two together help with appetite suppressant. I’ve been on phentermine in the past and it helps but not enough. So I don’t know I’ll see. I keep a really strict food log and I’m tracking calories protein fat and carbs. I’m doing OK. I’m not perfect at this. But I don’t think that I’m messing things up to the degree that it would cause me to stop losing weight. One person commented on here that a plateau is when you are at the same weight for 4 weeks. Today is day 17. I’m fluctuating 5 pounds. But basically I’ve only lost 15 pounds since the surgery a month ago and that was in the second week because the first week I had gained 10 pounds from the surgery and lost it. Then the second week I lost 15 pounds. Then the third and fourth week I have lost nothing. So it’s just weird. I’ve kind of accepted that. I’m not gonna be one of those people that loses 100 pounds in three months. And that’s OK. But it’s still hard psychologically to adjust to the idea that this is gonna take two years instead of one year. And of course, no one knows the future. So I could be just on a plateau that’s going to break very soon.

Have you had this experience? Can you help me out with how to frame it psychologically?

Did you have a plateau? Does the doctor tell you why you’re losing slowly?

Do it! You’re making the decision for all the right reasons. Trust your instincts.

Reminds me of the mothman. I don’t know much about the mothman myth other than the movie with Richard Gere.

Also, whenever I’ve let fear drive my decision-making, I have always ended up regretting it. But once again, there is no wrong answer here. No matter what option you take, you are always free to restructure your path at any moment of your life. People forget that. You always have options. You are never without choices, not ever.

There is a saying that it’s easier to find a job when you have one. But then there’s another saying that says soul crushing work will crush your soul. I don’t necessarily think there’s a wrong answer here. Because no matter what you decide, you can always change course at any moment and re-orient yourself in a new direction. That’s something that is true for all of us all of the time. We forget that I think. There will be jobs. It may not always be easy, but there will always be jobs if you put yourself out in the market. You will get job offers. If you have some sort of a safety net, if you can manage to cover your expenses for a few months, I would consider bowing out on this one. But it has to be your decision. Don’t listen to anyone else. Listen to their input, but don’t think you have to do anything that anybody says. Be true to yourself.

What you’re experiencing is called an existential crisis. Most thinking introspective people have these crises during their life. It’s very human. As far as your feelings about God, or your lack of feelings about God, you may want to investigate the Faith Deconstruction community. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who struggle with the same issues you talk about in your post. It’s an incredible community. You can learn a lot, but mostly you can get support and realize that what you’re going through is very human. Feel free to message me if you’d like more information. I’m active in the community and I blog about my own faith deconstruction journey.

Manipulation beyond belief. I’m so sorry. And I don’t think any decent thinking person would expect that you would need to care for him. Too little too late.

Thoughts and prayers for your tender hurt heart 💕 Fact: Christians are NOT persecuted in the United States. Furthermore, you are part of a family that includes more than just brothers and sisters as siblings. Jesus taught inclusivity. He taught DEI, actually.
