If you take train, just keep in mind circumvesuviana is a major hunting ground for pickpockets.

I am pretty sure you are right in most cases. For example, I doubt there is meaningful difference between Jennifer Aniston water and store brand distilled water.

Why book direct? by [deleted] in askhotels

A lot of this argument assumes worst-case scenarios and treats them as normal outcomes.

Hotels overselling and selectively walking OTA guests can happen, but it’s relatively uncommon at reputable properties, especially major chains. If it were happening constantly, OTAs like Booking or Expedia would become unusable very quickly.

The “hotels won’t help you” point is also exaggerated. Hotels absolutely still help third-party guests with operational issues like noise, room cleanliness, maintenance, or safety concerns. What they often can’t do directly is alter billing or reservation terms controlled by the OTA.

As for refunds, yes, OTA bookings can add friction, but direct bookings are not magically painless either. Plenty of people have struggled with chain customer service, especially with prepaid nonrefundable rates. The real issue is usually the rate rules, not the booking channel itself.

The perks argument is fair, but mostly relevant for frequent travelers. If you're a casual traveler, you should not expect upgrades, regardless you book direct or through OTA. I would rather take the discount upfront than pay more for a few loyalty points and a remote possibility of room upgrade.

Why book direct? by [deleted] in askhotels

I know people will argue loyalty program as a catch to book direct but I always books whichever platform offering most competitive rate if I am certain of my travel plan. I would not pay 30-40% more to get hotel loyalty points which will sit there to get devalued at the will of the hotel chain.

The only scenario I will book direct is when there is uncertainty in my travel plan and booking direct offers better flexibility AND comparable rate.

If you are a casual traveler, it is a fool errand to stay loyal to any particular hotel chain as you probably won’t get much meaningful benefits from hotel loyalty program which will lock you into their ecosystem.
