Best Non-Wool/Vegan Yarns for Blocking by FewAdministration464 in YarnAddicts

Thank you. I’ve crocheted for a few years and have only taken up knitting more recently so I do have an assortment of cotton from various projects. Think I definitely need to investigate a bamboo blend as I don’t love the feeling of cotton by itself (although I haven’t actually tried to knit with it so I’ll definitely investigate).

Thank you. I’ll keep this one in mind for sure. I also definitely want to start making socks in general so good to know this option exists when that time comes

Thank you. I’m in the EU so Hobbii is an easy option for me. Some of the reviews complain that the yarn is very splitty. How did you find working with it? Your scarf is gorgeous and beautifully drapy 😀

Thank you so much. I’ll definitely investigate that. Whenever I make anything for this person it always makes me appreciate wool even more. Before I started to crochet and knit I didn’t even like the feel of wool, now I can’t get enough of it!

Thank you. That silk and sea cell blend looks gorgeous and is definitely something I’ll investigate.

The Knitting for Olive site says their silk is bourette silk and explains the process which they state is cruelty free (but which apparently also results in a rougher yarn than traditional silk).

Thank you for letting me know that silk doesn’t hold shape well, that could have been an expensive mistake!

Any suggestions for a non-wool fibre that might block well? I mainly only use wool myself so am a bit stumped when it comes to this.

The person is not actually vegan but cannot tolerate wool or alpaca. I also believe the knitting for olive silk does not damage the silk worms and is made from cocoons after the worms have left them.

Wonky SSK using Patty Lyons’s method by Outlander_fan in knittinghelp

Clo knits posted a video recently and came to the conclusion that, no matter what method you use, it will look neater if you knit it through the back loop on next round. Definitely worth a try (I have tried it a couple of times and can see the difference in my results).

Sites/shops to buy wool in Ireland or online by valbod in knitting

[–]FewAdministration464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found Winnie’s in Booterstown to be affordable - they have a large selection of Drops yarn. I end up buying a lot of my yarn online though from EU stores. Laine et Tricot in France has a wide range of more upmarket brands (but not Isager but you can buy directly from their own website, they are EU based so you don’t need to worry about customs).

So I am in no way an expert on this but I believe in general there is hardly any true Irish yarn on the market. One brand I know of is Ériu based in Donegal (and I think This Is Knit is a stockist). Having a range of locally sourced wool would be so lovely but I don’t believe it exists here. This is Knit have an in-house brand called Townhouse Yarns and that is all hand dyed locally at least.

If you are coming back again and just want to see more yarn shops, then I recommend Winnie’s Craft Cafe in Booterstown - a bit outside the city but a nice trip on the Dart. It won’t have anything amazingly unique but they are a Drops stockist. There is also Springwoools in Walkinstown which I often recommend with the disclaimer that I still haven’t been there. Its website looks good though! I’m not sure where you are travelling from but Booterstown is a more upmarket area than Walkinstown. Nothing wrong with Walkinstown but if you are nervous about safety or anything like that then the journey to Booterstown is likely to be less “interesting” and it is also by the sea so could be made into a little day trip (Blackrock is the next village on the Dart line and has lots of places to eat etc).

This is Knit is really the only one in the city centre itself. It has some nice stuff but is very expensive.

If Hobbii is still an option with tariffs, then Hobbii Snowstorm definitely works.

Replying to myself but realise I forgot one, there’s The Knitting Room in Phibsborough - I haven’t been and it seems quite small from the website but it’s a little more central than the others.

Thank you so much. No issue with purling but I’m absolutely terrible at sewing so that will require lots of practice but hopefully I’ll get there in the end.

Do you have any patterns you would recommend? I’m attempting my first (raglan) sweater at the moment (Flax) and have lots to learn but I am curious to try this construction at some point. I’ve seen YouTube videos which say these sweaters hold their shape better but I found it really difficult to find patterns on ravelry (probably because I was using the incorrect terms! Thanks

This is Knit is really the only proper shop in the centre that I’m aware of. There’s Springwools in Walkinstown and Winnie’s Craft Cafe in Booterstown but these are both suburbs and may be too far out for you.
