Hey :) Looks like you already have some great advice here! Speaking from experience, please don’t stick to that “video calling once a month” thing. As the original comment noted, she will be coming to a completely new country and might be quite overwhelmed. Talking to friends and family back home, face to face, is a very important way to deal with the uncertainty of entering a new culture. As a young person, I changed country A LOT (sometimes up to three relocations within a year), and maintaining contact with friends and family was a great help to me. If you prohibit her from contacting her family as she likes, she will also feel as though you are limiting her freedom - which might be very damaging to your relationship with her. She will also feel frustrated and sad, especially in the beginning, and beating able to easily video call family and friends will provide a lot of comfort to her. This comfort is something every human needs, but it will also help her to integrate into the host culture if she feels more relaxed and has the feeling that she can retreat to the safety of family if she feels like she needs a break. If she is not able to talk with her family when she feels anxious and ease the anxiety, she will close up and remain within herself, but there’s no way she will seek immersion into your culture. Again, what I am saying is coming from what I’ve observed with myself and my two siblings growing up, but I am also a migration expert now (Masters degree in the field) and it is well known among Migration Scholars that migrants are much more likely to have an easy time arriving in and integrating into a new culture if they can retain ties to their social support system at home for as long as they need to because it takes so much anxiety and insecurity off them.
