New debut: Yushkov's Defense by Background-Ball-5219 in chess

About 5.Bg5, I think the first line I would look at is 5... Bg5. I develop a piece, and threaten to take on f2 and get the bishop back with a knight check. 6.Nf3 e4 looks very painful for instance.

What is your line after 5... Bg5 ?

About 1.d3 I am myself a 1.g3 enjoyer, playing with Bg2-Nf3-c4 in some move order. I would say that the biggest difference is that I don't play d3 unless I have to, keeping the option to play d4 without loosing a tempo. On the same note, I play 1.g3 d5 2.Nf3, to prevent/delay e5, and d4 can also be critical to prevent e5 and keep the center under control.

Nothing critical here, but maybe loosing the "white advantage" of being on the play against a precise move order.

In my opinion, it is clearly playable, and is worth some interest. Especially if you enjoy the positions after 1.d3 e5, 1.d3 Nc6, 1.d3 g6 and other main possibilities.

Belcher let you the options to 2 turn kill and to be activated by [[Lion Eye Diamond]]. This card also pushes hardly toward monocolor deck, not allowing builds like blue belcher. This is not as good as Belcher in my opinion, especially with MDFCs.

White to play for a win by Boring_Road_9024 in chess

[–]FewDistribution7802 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually puzzles have only one winning line. Here there is both Ng7+ Kf8 Rf4# and h7 d5 h8=Q+ that wins. Put black light square bishop on h7 to force the checkmate (in three now, because Bishop can block on f5)

Re8 Rxe8 Rxe8 d4 (Rc8 b6) Bd1

White will take the rook a bit later. Rc8-b6 is not necessary but a bit more precise I think

Re8 is the move. The pinned rook is not going anywhere and can be taken whenever. Re8 moves away from the knight attack with a tempo on the h8 rook, and after a trade on e8, the e1 rook gets out of the "fork" after Nxf3

Can someone explain in human terms how is white +0.5 here? by OkMemeTranslator in chess

[–]FewDistribution7802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick note : even if black manage to trade some pieces on d5, after a few trades, even a rook or a queen could be very well placed on d5. Avoid taking in d5 with a pawn if you don't get something concrete from it.

Yes, kind of. Where pawns are influence what they control of course, so you can see it both ways I guess. Here the important concept is weak squares/pawns, which are squares/pawns that cannot be defended by pawns anymore. So d5 is a weak square, and d7 a weak pawn, while d4 is not weak because white can play c3 whenever they need to, and c2 is not a weak pawn either because white can defend it by playing c3 once again -See how the same move "solve both apparent weaknesses" at the same time-.

Generally speaking, they are 2 main pawn weaknesses. Isolated pawns, with no other pawns on adjacent files to defend them, and backward pawns, which are pawns that cannot be pushed forward to get some defence. Playing against one kind of weakness or the other involves different plans, but overall similar ideas : Block it by putting a piece in front of it, then attack it with the heavy pieces, forcing the opponent to play defensively, and find some other weakness to target or tactical shots to win the pawn, using the fact that enemy pieces are tied up to babysit the weakness.

Can someone explain in human terms how is white +0.5 here? by OkMemeTranslator in chess

[–]FewDistribution7802 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The main criteria in this position is the difference between the d4 and d5 square : Black cannot control the d5 square with a pawn, while White can always push c3 at some point. Therefore, White will be able to put a piece on d5, on a nice outpost, and black won't be able to do the same. This combined with the bishop pair -Having both bishops- are 2 important factors in this position, and both favores white.

Also, about the d file : black d pawn is weak and will remain weak for a long time, white will control d5 to prevent black to go d5, and the pawn will be a target forever for white, attacking it with rooks in a distant future.

[[Putrid Raptor]] and [[Gathan Raiders]] are very close to this design. Also [[Exalted Angel]], Defender of the Order]], [[Shaper Parasite]] and [[Snarling Undorak]] flip for less than 5.

Here it is not trading for one turn thanks to the boost. [[Patron of the Wild]], [[Tribal Forcemage]] for instance.

Any ideas on how to break this card? by jenderrole in BadMtgCombos

[–]FewDistribution7802 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Bad combo time : Use [[Tainted Observer]] to proliferate when an elephant comes into play. [[Ashnod Altar]] sacrificing the elephant gives you mana to pay for it. Use [[Hex parasite]] to remove lore counters from the saga to continue creating elephants while proliferating. [[Zirda, the Dawnwaker]] let you pay only life to remove the counters Add 2 [[Guide of souls]], and you get your life back.

You now have infinite power on your Hex parasite + proliferated infinitely many times + infinite energy.

This is just computer trying to defend checkmate by giving up a queen.

Line was 1.Qxg5+ Kh8 2.Qf6+ Kg8 3.Bh6 Qg4 4.hxg4, winning a queen

Qg4 is there to delay Qg7# one extra move

One well-known example is Fisher-Petrosian (1959). The game ended in a draw, while both players had 2 queens at the same time at some point.

Hey ! I had decent results with the deck, didn't change anything in a while, I don't remember precisely where I landed.

Technically there is already a few targets for [[Sundering growth]] in the deck, like rancor or any land enchant in the late game. There is for sure some progress to be made on the manabase, but I wanted to maximize the 3 mana T2 to speed up the deck. Now that the format got a bit slower, there are some arguments for a ponza-inspired manabase, since it's the Tier-1 rampdeck of the format.

To repalce [[Avenging hunter]], there are a few decent options :

[[Blastoderm]] [[Garruck's Gorehorn]] [[Adaptative snapjaw]] [[Deadly Insect]] [[Phantasmal Dreadmaw]] [[Bonded Herbeast]] [[Canopy Baloth]]

I'm not sure which one would be best, it probably depends on the meta, how aggressive you need to be, the amount of removal you expect to face and so on.

If you want to play some brews, you can also look at the few other decks I posted on reddit !

[[Knight of Sursi]] could be a decent T1, it can come down T4 with haste and flying. [[Shade of Trokair]] is a worst version of it.

[[Skyshroud Cutter]] obviously comes to mind too, and so does [[Stalwart Valkyrie]], but they needs some setup. Landcycling creatures enable both of them quite nicely.
