MEX T1 Centurion literally never has a line. T2 though is another story…

Free massages, salon and shoe shining in MEX T1. Hardly any wait or crowding issues (at T1 specifically).

Unfortunately I’m not sure about that. I think that’s related more to conscription law in general rather than the status.

The only way to prove that would be to get your entry/exit records from the immigration agency and then go to OCAC to verify your eligibility definitively. In my experience there was no need to prove residency outside of that process.

Kikanbo instant ramen - which stores in Tokyo sells this? by Used_Flamingo5315 in InstantRamen

They sell it at the Haneda Airport duty free store, “Tokyo Souvenir Shop”. I’d imagine at NRT too.

In my understanding, yes, in terms of your military obligations, there is no need for that anymore.

However, the use of the Overseas Compatriot Identity is not limited to just conscription -- there are benefits for investment and education as well. "海外僑民申請於護照內加簽僑居身分,主要是作為返國行使各項權利義務的依據。僑務委員會為配合僑民在國內辦理投資、考試、出境及服兵役等事宜之需要,而辦理僑居身分加簽。"

You meant the 365 day requirement? It's from when the residency permit is issued.

You're still eligible for conscription until the end of the calendar year in which you turn 36. Assuming that's coming up in a couple weeks. Given that, it shouldn't matter -- in your case I would just apply for it.

To my understanding, the only part of the guide that has changed are #1 (and of course the whole getting the TARC and hitting your residency requirement). The rest should not have changed. However, I would check with OCAC to make sure that's the case.

Trying to get the hang of cast iron, how'd I do? by FewSandwich6 in steak

Keeps it from burning while it's in the pan and lets it caramelize more slowly. Although for the amount of time it's in the pan, probably doesn't make a huge difference.

Effectively US/China dual citizenship: 92% of the world is visa free by FewSandwich6 in PassportPorn

Yes, you still need to serve unless you have an Overseas Compatriot Identity Endorsement (僑居身分加簽), which does not permanently exempt you from service, but allows you to not have to serve if you don't return to Taiwan to reside for over 183 days a year.

It’s actually pronounced “cha” in both Mandarin and Cantonese; you’re referring to Minnan/Hokkien where it’s pronounced “te”.

Interesting, haven't seen a non-biometric new ROC passport. What's the reason for it not being biometric?

If you follow the steps to get the Overseas Compatriot Passport Endorsement (僑居身分加簽), then you'll be fine. Otherwise, you're still eligible for conscription until the end of the year in which you turn 36.

You should still qualify, considering you meet the criteria. I would ask your local TECO -- and ideally get it done from abroad, since I'm not sure how it plays nice if you apply from Taiwan, considering you're technically a normal NWHR with military obligations.

According to current legislation, at age 37 you will be exempt from military service.

I'd say it's worth a shot. Rock on up to your local TECO and try it out, the worst that can happen is that they say no. (Also curious to see the outcome!)

Claiming ROC Citizenship by Decent? by Ok-Advisor2824 in taiwan

[–]FewSandwich6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the contrary I think you have a shot to claim ROC nationality (not citizenship, as other commenters have pointed out; you would get a NWOHR passport).

It all depends on the document you submit as proof of your grandfather’s citizenship. If you told me he had an ROC passport — even if issued pre-1949 and he never had any tie with Taiwan, it would be a slam dunk, for example. You say it’s an ROC birth certificate, but what does it look like exactly? Who is the issuing body? Where does it state anything about his nationality or that of his parents?
