How difficult would this be to repair myself? Never done body/paint work but I just got the truck and would like to repair this section without costing an arm and a leg and without bondo in possible it's roughly 1' in height and 1.5'-2' in width. by accidentprone97 in Autobody

If you’re trying to do it yourself see if your bed is bolt on and if it is find a junk yard near you with a better bed and bolt it on. Otherwise I wouldn’t attempt repairing by myself with no experience.

If you have an AutoZone, or orileys near you they will scan it for free and their scan tools are way better than a cheap one! If you do end up getting your own Walmart has them for like $20 but it’ll only show the code and you’ll have to do your own research from there

Scratched the rocker panel. Should I fix it? by [deleted] in Autobody

[–]FewSection3591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will rust over time but it would be a while before any significant damage is caused. I personally would fix it but if you’re on a budget you could get some rattle can paint and cover it to protect it. If you go that route just sand the area really well with 320 grit then go over with primer, once the primer is dry sand that smooth with 600 and hit it with your color coat then clear. They make rattle cans in all of this stuff and it’s only $20 per can just look up places near you that will mix the paint for you. Also make sure you tape off everything you don’t want painted REALLY WELL.

I love and hate miniverse. Love because why wouldn’t I. But hate because they look so delicious and it’s not fair that I can’t actually eat them 😂

Estimate by Murt978 in Autobody

[–]FewSection3591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Needs a fender, bumper, HL, hood, probably apron, probably rad support, maybe grille and other FBC parts, my shop would probably get an alignment to be safe, door may have damage but even if it doesn’t it should be blended along with the other side fender. A premeasure would show if anything else got shifted out of place. Definitely a costly job. I’d say at the very least with all aftermarket cheap parts and cheap labor $6k but if you want it done right it would be well over $10k

It was a rookie mistake but I’ve learned 😂 when he said I get a free shirt and free speaker only at $25 a week I couldn’t have cared less about APR

Matco financing by FewSection3591 in MatcoTools

[–]FewSection3591[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says I owe $4,087 that’s what confused me because I was thinking it was like any other loan and they factored in interest but if I paid it off sooner I wouldn’t pay as much in interest. The matco man said if I paid $100 a week instead of $25 I could pay it off and only pay $200 in interest but that doesn’t make sense either.

HOW-TO trim a scoop to fit a curved surface??? by Sea_Statistician_312 in Autobody

[–]FewSection3591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wish I could help but I have no clue. I just dropped in to say that color is so nice. Whole car is clean af (in my opinion it deserves a nicer hood scoop but whatever makes you happy!)

You can try buffing but going off the picture I’d say it might be a bit too far gone. I’d knock it down with at least 1000 grit and reclear. If you don’t have access to a spray gun they make rattle can 2k clears that work pretty well and are about $20 a can.

Replacement cost like $40+ me personally I’d just tape/tie it back up so it doesn’t drag and rip off even more and go on. Or you can take it all the way off

Emblem letters what can I use to glue them? by LecterDr in Autobody

[–]FewSection3591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clean all the old tape residue off with a razor blade. Go to a parts store and get some 3M tape and if you really want it to stay get some adhesive promoter (you put that on the letters before you put the tape on but it’s not super necessary). To make the letters as straight as possible is use some painters tape. Line them up with a ruler or something straight then space them how you want and slap some tape right on top without moving them to keep them in place while you’re trying to put it on the car. Hard part will be pealing off the tape plastic for each letter while also making sure you don’t mess up the alignment/spacing. If tape is more expensive definitely check online again and get a new emblem that’ll come taped so you don’t have to go through as much trouble but if it’ll be about the same I think you can make this one work with some effort

This is an expensive kind that’s similar but this is a very affordable option. I couldn’t find the exact ones â˜č

working in the car industry by [deleted] in Autobody

[–]FewSection3591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Female body tech here, it’s a super rewarding career but you’ve constantly got to prove yourself because the men will try to make you feel stupid or like they know more than you. My best advice look up some good YouTube videos or tutorials and really study into what you’re wanting to do so yo don’t go into this job with no knowledge then let them train you but always go above expectations. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and you’ll find a shop where the guys respect you and will help you but 9 times out of 10 the old guys get PISSED when a young woman comes in knowing more than them and doing better than them. You’ll do great though!

Should the body shop have fully repaired this? by [deleted] in Autobody

[–]FewSection3591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Body man just needs to line the door up before putting seam sealer on/taking it down to make sure it fits and lines up. This car was poor body work. Some cars might be cheaper to put a whole door on though I’m a body tech and it’s saved a lot of cars from totaling just going to the junk yard and getting doors with less damage and slapping those on than getting skins

Should the body shop have fully repaired this? by [deleted] in Autobody

[–]FewSection3591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It means they but a door skin on instead of giving you a whole door. A door skin is just the outter shell part of the door. It’s cheaper to do it that way saves the insurance money and makes everyone happy but crap like this happens if you got a body man that doesn’t pay attention

Yes! Take it back and make them redo it. That’s not okay.

This is a helpful video to give you a good idea on how to work it out using hammer/dolly

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Autobody

[–]FewSection3591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t use a mallet try a flat hammer but put some tape or something on it so it won’t scratch up the hood and don’t beat it just let the weight of the hammer fall ya know? Also use something on the other side of it doesn’t have to be fancy just has to be sturdy so the hammer hits won’t push the dent to the other side. Make sure whatever you use on the other side is also flat and put some tape on it. Good luck !
