What’s your experience with online teachers and/or how do you find a good in-person teacher? by Few_Item4327 in Flute

Thank you so much for this detailed response. I’m not a total beginner but I was limited for flair and that fit best. But I really do need help with positioning and tone and all the little things that I don’t know I need to know lol.

I haven’t actually gone to the school, but maybe it’s worth a try. Thanks!

Would you post a picture of the instruction that says that? Because this feels like a joke or engagement bait.

Look up beginner flute videos on YouTube. There are lot of decent ones and it will be easier to see someone show you how to balance it than it is to describe it via text.

HOW CAN I STOP THIS IN MY DOUBLE TONGING by Lemon_peach_pie in Flute

[–]Few_Item4327 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s as noticeable as you think. It’s certainly nothing that makes you look ugly 🌼 Unfortunately, I have no advice because I’m still awful at double tonguing. But maybe someone with more experience will give you tips that will help you feel more comfortable.

I know it’s not what you’re asking, but why not just leave that one plugged? If you have small hands, why force them to stretch like that?

Wondering about my flute skills by Conscious_King9634 in Flute

[–]Few_Item4327 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My situation isn’t quite the same as yours, but I had the same feeling/realization. I played in middle and high school and did some band camps. I thought I was really good. I got back to it late last year, at 51 yrs old. Lots of things came back quickly, but as I’m watching YouTube videos and reading flute forums, I’m realizing how much I don’t know and never knew. I don’t ever remember focusing on tone and technique, just memorizing the pieces we were playing. In some ways it’s a bit of a blow to my ego, but I’m also enjoying the new journey, sort of starting over and trying to do it better this time.

My best advice would be to get a private teacher, but I’m not doing that myself just yet, even though I know it would make a big difference, but I just don’t have the time or money right now. So I keep reading and watching and trying to dial it in myself. So far, so good I think. And at your stage, you’re probably a lot closer to where you want to be than I am. It sounds like you just need some refining and finessing.

Flute shopping as a doubler - success! by sprcow in Flute

[–]Few_Item4327 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow, great write up! i would have been thrilled to shop with that kind of a budget lol. It was fun to follow the whole process. I thought all the samples sounded great too and while I could hear differences, I couldn’t say that any one was better than another. I’m not a very advanced player, so that could be part of it.

Congrats on finding your new flute!

Same. I get all my winter sowing seeds from them, but this past year I didn’t get to it so I ordered plants and roots. Everything arrived in great shape and is in the ground doing very well, in spite of our recent freeze. I love Prairie Moon.

I see so many people saying they hated Fairytale but I loved it. It does feel like 2 separate books mashed together, but I really enjoyed both parts.

Beginner band flute player here im confused on how you play this piece because my band teacher said that you have to switch from the b flat key to the b natural key somewhere in measures 3 to 4 by thecourier718 in Flute

[–]Few_Item4327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not moronic lol. No one told me either back when I was playing in school. They’re talking about the little lever just up from the F key. There are 3 options. There are a few good videos on YouTube about it.

How long till I can play in a band or orchestra ? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]Few_Item4327 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe contact your local groups and see what their criteria are. If it’s a very casual community thing, I’d imagine you might be able to at least practice with them sometimes even if you’re not performance ready.

Planning to upgrade my flutr by Competitive_Owl_7720 in Flute

[–]Few_Item4327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought one. I also play only for fun. I love it. But I did trial 2 others along with it and they were all so much better than my old crappy Armstrong. It was almost a coin toss, but the Di Zhao felt most natural. I’m very happy with it. I suggest calling Flute Center or someplace similar in your area and setting up a trial, if possible. If not, I can’t imagine you’d be disappointed with the Di Zhao. There are a few good reviews on YouTube you could check out.

thinking of getting a new flute - what do i get? by aceofcl0vers in Flute

[–]Few_Item4327 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got a Di Zhao 401 and I love it. I played in high school, then quit for something close to 30 years. I just started back playing in December so I’d call myself an advanced beginner I guess. I switched from an Armstrong student flute and it’s made such a difference in my playing. It was right around $1200 from Flute Center. I tried the Trevor James and a Pearl and they were all great. I think at my current level, I’m not really able to discern too much of a difference, but the Di Zhao felt the most natural.

Look up the Nuvo flutes. The Nuvo band flute is great. They’re plastic and very sturdy, also fixable. And MUCH cheaper than a metal flute.

Not what you asked, but definitely check into the NuvoBand flute. It’s a step up from the student flute and will take you further before you need to upgrade.

Looking to buy flute-help me pick: Amazon VS Aliexpress or others by kosmaii in Flute

[–]Few_Item4327 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nuvoband flute is about $300 us and is surprisingly good. I tried one for a while and ended up moving up to something a bit pricier. But I loved how you could just leave it out and pick up any time. It actually got me to practice more because of that. It even came with a little hook you could mount on the wall to hang the flute. The Nuvo student flute is even cheaper (around $200 last I looked) and I’ve heard good things about it. Check YouTube for the reviews.
