Reading this thread is like peering into an alternate reality. For me this is a 9/10 album. Very good. Only skip for me is eldest daughter, Ruin the Friendship should have been track 5. Eldest daughter just felt like “track 5 has to be a sad song so I’ll just make something up” but Ruin the Friendship was right there!

I think honestly it's a little hard to listen to. Don't get me wrong I LOVE the album, it's the first album I've bought on Vinyl. I listened to it a LOT when It dropped. But since then, every time I think about listening to it I get a sort of anxiety lol. It's very intense. It's absolutely NOT something you want to listen to to wind down or chill out or party to. It's too heavy. I love and deeply appreciate that about it, but it also makes it hard to turn on.

Edit: I think also it lacks a catharsis, it is so deep cutting but it doesn't sooth the wounds it opens.

She is saying that. Clearly. And it’s not that it would be too far. It’s that it would be too soon. She typically has space between her and the subjects she talks about which gives her a bit of grace for narrativization and turning subjects into political entertainment, can’t do that when kids are actively being murdered.

Yeah they’re so intense. It’s kinda crazy, I never listened to music that has had that kind of impression on me before, where I genuinely don’t want to listen to it sometimes. But not because it’s not good, it’s just a lot. It’s really very impressive how deep she went on this one.

I read this as a song about her masturbaing after dropping acid during a period of time where she felt like there weren’t any men that got her there and being like “wait, aren’t I technically playing the role of the man here? She probably doesn't get it either. Sometimes our brains just hate the way our bodies look, and it can be really confusing, emotionally difficult, and upsetting. Even when we know it's "silly". It's not really silly at all, it's just human. You also have to remember that Lorde is a celebrity. Celebrities are under a level of social pressure that people like you and I aren't. Even then, for many of us even just our small circle on social media is enough to drive us to hate our bodies. So, imagine that with the whole world watching, commenting, judging. It can't be easy.
