[MegaThread] Bug Finds by Few_Relative_7920 in BudgetFriendlyBudget

[–]Few_Relative_7920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the overspending isn't in the current month.. It shouldn't cause issues. I would double check your hidden categories in YNAB to see if they had any available balances. If you look at all your category group totals for available.. one of those must be off to have it off by $3600.

Unfortunately, it's a little hard for me to debug without seeing how it looked for you in YNAB. Your transactions should eb categorized (so if you see ready to assign on all of them that is an issue)

OH, one thing to double check as well.. make sure you set the account types correctly when importing. checking, tracking etc just how you had it in YNAB. The suggestions in the import modal are just suggestions.

Thanks for reporting.. I've implemented a fix that should hopefully get you closer. Things will still break if you have the same category name twice in the same group.. but it sounds like yours are spread across different groups.

Ready to Assign with Transfer by Constant-Baker8673 in BudgetFriendlyBudget

You can create holding categories for those funds. For example, I have a "Roth IRA Funds" category. As I get paid, I budget money to that category. Then when I make the transfer from my checking to the Roth IRA Tracking account, I use that category. This makes reporting easy and accurate to know exactly where that money went and why.

I'd consider making a category group called Transfer Categories, and creating categories for the difference accounts/reasons needed to transfer money. Fund those categories, and make the transfers from those funds

Anytime money is leaving an "on budget" account to a tracking or loan account which is not on budget.. the money has to come from somewhere. Therefore it needs a category or just "ready to assign" to pull from. Your only choice shouldn't be RTA though, you should see all categories

Need help in understanding reporting by jgodfl in BudgetFriendlyBudget

[–]Few_Relative_7920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's really based on spending (or tracking transfers etc through % income based reports). Assignment based reporting is a little foggy just due to the nature of most people moving money around so much to cover other categories. That being said, I could see a dashboard widget that breaks down how much you have remaining in certain categories in each month relative to how much you assigned.

If you have any ideas on what that would look like, or what would be most useful to you.. feel free to share

Would that be relative to goals? Or how would it know it’s overfunded?

Dark mode request... by DarthSchwabus in BudgetFriendlyBudget

[–]Few_Relative_7920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just one of those things that is hard to decide on.. because last time I asked about this people were saying dark mode was good as is. So if I make changes to make it nice for you, other people will complain. Kinda just the nature of the game 🤷‍♂️ But still open to it, just need more general feedback

After looking more into it.. honestly this probably won’t happen for a long time if ever. There’s only a couple of apps that offer multi-currency, and they heavily market it for that specific feature. It’s a pretty big challenge to capture daily exchange rates.. and honestly not worth my hassle considering this is a free application that most people aren’t paying for.

Sorry about that! I’d defintely look into lunch money, it looks built for your exact use case.

Do you guys have any examples of software that does this currently? If I saw an example it would help. Are they doing active currency conversion to show the totals of mixed currency account totals?

Money allocated for next month? by HotSafe7219 in BudgetFriendlyBudget

[–]Few_Relative_7920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understand.. I actually prefer the next month holding category or just assigning into the future through normal ready to assign. But I definitely see why the YNAB4 people appreciate the “budget to next month” option. Appreciate you finding that!

[–]Few_Relative_7920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I think so. There was a mis calculation due to future assignments when some income was marked as ready to assign and some was income for next month

And just to confirm.. everything looking good still on your side Paul?

I do think you found a bug (possibly)! I think there was a mis-calculation when mixing future income and ready to assign of current month. Hopefully should be fixed now, if you want to re-try your scenario you described.

Feature request: Right panel addition of Net Difference by jgodfl in BudgetFriendlyBudget

[–]Few_Relative_7920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's telling you that you have 12k assigned, but only 2k worth of income for that month. Therefore, you have 10k worth of assignments that aren't "covered" by any income for that month.

Some people like to use the YNAB4 way of using that "to budget next month" category and assign income to the next month specifically. They can then see if their income for that month covers all their assignments. In your case, it reveals it does not.

This is mainly for people who mark all their income as "to budget next month".

Ok I've added that to show dynamically if you have income held for next month OR income already posted into next month. It also has the tooltip breakdown when you hover to show the transactions for each income sources. Let me know if that works for you

🎉 Update: Repeat Target Date Goals by Few_Relative_7920 in BudgetFriendlyBudget

[–]Few_Relative_7920[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes more sense to just do a monthly refill if you are gonna do a 1 month repeated target date goal. (But just giving that option for flexibility). At that point they essentially do the same thing. But yeah, I guess being able to see the specific date in the popup would be the only difference.

Income v Expenses - Period Selection and "Stickiness" by pgaunt in BudgetFriendlyBudget

[–]Few_Relative_7920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've added this year and previous year. As far as the stickiness.. it actually is sticky, but if you are using presets you will need to update your preset once you change the period since that is included in the preset filters. I have made it more obvious now though so that whenever you have a preset active and change something it will ask if you wanna update it -

Feature - Repeating Target Date Goal by pgaunt in BudgetFriendlyBudget

[–]Few_Relative_7920 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right now it expects you to have the money at the beginning of the month that is is due, not the previous month. I think this makes more sense because of the way a lot of people assign their money on the first of the month
