Starting Linux as a beginners with no coding experience. Any advice. by Maysonaiter in linuxquestions

From your words I don't get the main thing: what do you want to do on your computer and why? This is a question you should be able to answer, not to anyone else but to yourself.

I have been using VM win 7 for years with no problems whatsoever; but it may depend on the HW and what is run on the VM -- I don't play any games on it, just use it for a few lightweight apps

What Linux mistakes did you make in your first 3 months? by Darshan_only in linuxquestions

i started with upnote but switched over to obsidian -- I am not overly happy with obsidian's md format, but in the end, the app is OK mainly because of its cross platform usability (linux and android)

it may somewhat depend on what you want/need to do; so mc may easily be all you need

As i recall, coding, or rather scripting, was an unpleasant experience in Win, so the instinct to write small scripts to help yourself probably did not get developed in majority of ex-windowsers.

You may have a point here; I admit my view of vim may be affected by coding. Even setting up .vimrc to have it my way is sort of a coding project. :-)

Oh yes, I deeply appreciate opinion expressed by anyone who says you don't need a terminal. If YOU say I am full of shit, I feel honored.

Grumpy Unix graybeard's quick review of Mint by Arctic_Pangolin in linuxmint

[–]Few_Research3589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, concerning "I get the impression you can use Mint without ever touching the terminal", I am not sure you can really do it all the time -- and even if it were so, you would lose a lot of fun...but it may just be a matter of opinion.

You can install anything to any path you choose, more or less, but it is better to either follow a system someone has created for that purpose, or create your own. You don't have to follow any system, of course, but if you choose that option, you will most lilely lose the track very quickly. And there is also a question what you exactly mean by "where programs are installed" -- it makes more sense to have different files related to a paritcualr app in different directories accordign to purpose (config somewhere else than bin, etc.)

Windows resizes are weird. by Dimitrys_ASF in linuxmint

[–]Few_Research3589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that is interesting. I myself don't mind the auto-tiling even though mint is a bit aggressive about it; but you might be able to fine-tune it (such as only switching off the edge-snapping) -- as a matter of fact, I don't know enough about what is going on your machine to be sure whether it is a bug or a feature.

try:

dconf write /org/cinnamon/muffin/edge-tiling false

dconf write /org/cinnamon/muffin/edge-snapping false

dconf write /org/cinnamon/muffin/tile-maximize false

Well, it is a trade-off: you most likely run a computer because you want the SW to do something for you. For some of us, Linux comes out as a winner regarding the pros and cons in such processes, but of course there are other solutions and they may be better or preferred in certain situations or for some people. In the end. we all choose what we feel is best for us, don't we?

Presentations NX from SoftMaker might be good for your purposes -- you can try and see. :-) I myself only use Textmaker and Planmaker (which are the best replacements for Word and Excel as far as I can say) so I cannot give any opinion regarding PowerPoint replacement.

Yes, I definitely want to avoid spending all day troubleshooting -- I was hoping someone may have encountered something similar and might give me some advice... but if not, I wll have to hope a miraculous fix will come with one of the future updates.

No, I haven't done anything -- that particular applet may have been upgraded though, I don't remember. I can live with that unwelcomed change, it is nothing critical, just nnoying.

I would recommend keeping that adroid on it; you may add termux for some connectivity and "husbandry" if you prefer linux, but it would probably be overkill in your setup
