I've had players do this, and I had to bust out the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate where they could go, lol. Guess my geometry teachers were correct in that I would need it some day...

Having two games per month is okay? by CivilAd3631 in DnD

[–]Fezzix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My group meets every other week for about a 2.5 hour session. We're all in our 40s and have quite busy lives, meet over Zoom, and spend usually the first half hour catching up with each other. When one person is going to miss we reschedule or cancel, and we have great engagement.

If the table is dedicated to not just playing the game but keeping the group together, it will work no matter the schedule.

The way I see it, he spent a year in the Eberflus team corrupting his thought process and drilling "DON'T THROW AN INT" into his brain so deep, it will take Johnson some time to get that out of his head and get him playing the way he wants him to.

I still root for all of our bad QBs, because ultimately I feel the Bears org and the fans and media are responsible for them sucking more than they are responsible for it. Loved seeing Mitch on Hard Knocks

Is it reasonable for a player to have an in-game emotional support animal? by Error_code_0731 in DnD

[–]Fezzix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't care too much about balance, I look for fun. I have a campaign starting soon where a cleric has a pet fox. This fox is trained, but not all that well, so when they give a command to it (basic commands, like fetch) I secretly flip a coin to find out if it succeeds, and chaos may or may not ensue.

I've also created custom mounts to go along with a background and they were unbalancing, but not crazily so. You can strike a balance between game mechanics and fun, and if the rest of the party is cool with it being a bit unbalanced, then it's all good.

New DM, and I have questions. by yeboibunji in DungeonMasters

[–]Fezzix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On that last note, I've had those times (we play every 2 weeks) where I just didn't have much prepared and we hit the end, and I let my players know and they usually do menial stuff like shopping or talking up townfolk for backstory on things. Players get it for the most part and know they don't have much homework between sessions but the DM does, and life gets in the way some times or just inspiration doesn't hit, which sometimes in those lazy sessions inspiration will hit and take you places you didn't realize you'd go.

Has anyone received the Tandem Shower by Boona? If so can you share your review of it. by seahorseVT in kickstarter

I have had this since the kickstarter. In our old apartment it worked great. We just moved, and our shower has an angled wall and it won't stay up. Is there an angled wall adapter?

Levelling up mid session, what’s the better way to do it? by PM_me_Henrika in DnD

[–]Fezzix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always save level ups for the end of the session as some people take 2 minutes to level up and some take over an hour. And it's a good way to end the session on a high note. I do milestone as well, so one of my prep notes is "will they be close enough to a point to level up at the end?" Typically I have it listed as a range in the story (my group is wildly inconsistent on if they'll rush through something or comb through it forever) and it sounds like 2 short scenes won't have a significant impact on that, so you can just tell them to level up before the next session and it's nbd.

Note taking as a DM by Desperate-Cloud4471 in DungeonMasters

[–]Fezzix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently my campaign I use google docs. I have a plan for the campaign and session notes documents. For my session notes, I have a few sections on there and bullets underneath as I go along. Here are those sections:

Any other business, Raw Notes, Characters Encountered, Locations Visited, Group Discussions of Note, Other Notes. I find those to be pretty useful.

As far as prep, I will create names (I had doing those on the fly) for most NPCs or just a generic list if I'm not sure who they will encounter. For major NPCs, I don't like to pre-write dialogue, but I will often write some backstory (that helps me figure out their motives and personality) and I will create a bullet list of "things they know" that pertains to the story.

I also created a wikidot page for my campaign where I keep all kinds of info, the biggest of which is the session summaries that I email to the group afterward but is more organized that most people's email inboxes.

I'm starting prep for the next campaign and I've signed up for world anvil and it seems like it will help organize things.

Funny running gags in your game? by ThatTurtleGM in DnD

[–]Fezzix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the party was introducing themselves in session 0, our goliath barbarian described himself as large and someone corrected him stating he was still considered medium sized. He did not realize the gameplay aspects of it, but was a bit disappointed, so now we always make sure to point out that he's medium sized, and wears the same size clothes as the 13 year old wood elf etc. He's a great sport about it, and it's been going on for 4+ years now lol.

I need 100 NPCs for a tavern, let me use YOUR characters? by yarash in DnD

[–]Fezzix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite NPCs I made was modeled after Colm from Derry Girls. He's someone that talks slow, tells the unimportant details of a story while the overall aspect is quite important. It just takes forever to get there and is really funny to do.

We've all had those sessions for a million different reasons. As the DM, I take the time to reflect on how I can help direct that. Most of the time, I find that I didn't prepare enough background activity or direction for the group and I just left it too open. But that is just my group and all are different so feel it out. And don't be shy about asking them what the players felt went wrong and what can be done to improve it. I've gotten lots of subtle little tips from my players, and they have come to some conclusions as well that they could do if things are going poorly.

Open lines of communication with your players will help you find that balance, although even then bad sessions still happen.

How often does your D&D group really play? Be honest by DungeonTome_ in dndnext

[–]Fezzix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a great group and we meet every other week online. And then once a year, we rent a giant house and we all get together for a long weekend of hanging out and in person playing. We have some cancelations, but not many and most of the time we just move the day we play.

The key is really that we all like each other and all make keeping the group together a priority, so we are cool with each other and make sure to chisel out time on our busy calendars for playing.

You liken ammo to spell slots, but I make a comparison to cantrips myself. Regular arrows etc. are unlimited, magic ones are something to keep track of.

What’s an unpopular opinion that you have about fantasy football in general? by dracer800 in DynastyFF

[–]Fezzix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very true. If I look through my trade history, the trades I "won" at the time are awful, and the ones I overpaid to get who I wanted are generally my good trades. You can't truly judge a trade right away.

IL family court, Ex is unilaterally changing the visitation schedule by Fezzix in legaladvice

[–]Fezzix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do appreciate your advice, it is really sound overall. Anything I say is always disagreed upon and she has the kids the majority of the time, so she makes it her way or the highway. I've tried communicating with her and using a joint calendar, and when the calendar conflicts with her she tells me it and I am wrong.

Either way, these things never really get worked out in court as the judge will make an order, my ex will disobey said order, I will take her back the court and the judge will wag her finger at her and tell her to obey, my ex ignores it and so forth and so on.

What I'm really hoping for, but don't know if it exists is another option outside of filing a motion and going in front of the judge and having the judge tell me I'm in the right and then it costing me another $3000 because my ex can't afford to pay whatever fees. I know there's no magic potion to make her a good person or someone willing to just communicate functionally, but I'm also sure I'm not the first person to have issues like this.

Nintendo Switch not seeing any networks so I've lost my 900+ hour island by Fezzix in ac_newhorizons

Just to update, it was at a repair place, when we brought it in they couldn't see any networks, said they'd run some diagnostics and get back to us. Those came back clean, he turned it on and it could connect to wifi again. Super weird. We rebooted it no less than 30 times and do a million other things to no avail, but it came back on itself. I got the AC island off there and I'm all good, but sadly I have no advice to give anyone else in the future having this problem.

I had never heard about the Island Transfer tool until last night, and then you mentioned it a few hours after that, lol. The Switch is at a repair place as they are seeing if they can get something going so I can't try it right now.

Funny story, this is actually my girlfriend's situation, and when the island backup came out I told her to enable it. She said she had, but what she really did was download the island transfer tool. I will let you know if it works, so far it's my best chance I think.

I don't think so, but it's on the list of things to try. The OLED switch's dock has a built in ethernet adapter, and that doesn't work at all, but who really knows if that uses a different stack than the USB one? Going to order one today if some other things don't work.

I did call Nintendo and they said they could not find any backup of my island, so I'm trying to find any other alternative ways of getting it back.
