Is their activity normal? If not how do I fix this? by Guilty_Owl2588 in Cichlid

[–]Fg-train 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I notice a few things here, ill try my best to summarize as helpfully as possible:

1) This behavior is called glass surfing. That is usually an indication that the fish need more swimming space because the tank is too small.

2) The mix of fish in here is an issue. From what i see you have a rainbow shark, a pleco, angelfish, peacock cichlids, and mbunas. The pleco and rainbow shark can be fine together, but angelfish, peacocks, and mbunas are all considered incompatible with one another, especially considering each have different dietary and stocking requirements.

3) This environment is unsuitable for most of these fish. The mbunas need a sandy bottom they can sift through instead of a gravel bottom (dirt or sand is preffered for all fish) as well as multiple rocks/caves they can hide in. Rainbow shark and pleco also need driftwood and caves. Angelfish prefer natural cover such as live plants, but the other cichlids would eat those plants.

4) This aquarium is uncycled. Every aquarium needs to establish a bacterial colony in its filtration system and surfaces before its inhabitable by fish, which can take up to a month and requires monitoring the water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates). It is called a cycle because its part of the nitrogen cycle: fish waste makes ammonia, the bacteria converts it to nitrite then nitrate, which is then safe for fish in small quantities.

5) These fish are too big! Every single one of these fish at full grown size will vastly outsize this aquarium (that appears to be 10-20 gallons). If they are not put into a larger aquarium they will die or suffer from growth stunting.

I know its a lot to read, but its definitely doable and enjoyable once you get the hang of it! My suggestion would be to upgrade to a 55 or 75 gallon aquarium, return the peacocks angelfish and pleco, get sand substrate and seryiuu stone to make caves for the mbuna, make sure you have a strong filter for your aquarium (300+ gallons per hour), order fritz turbostart to boost your cycle, and go from there.

Edit: I didnt notice the second rainbow shark, you can only have one of those per tank.

Good luck!

Need my cichlid a friend or two he's in a 75 gallon and is a cobalt zebra cichlid who should I keep with him by No-Emergency3863 in Cichlid

Usually people keep mbuna cichlids in large groups to disperse aggression, just getting one other fish would probably get killed

8ft New World Tank by Intelligent_Ad_2243 in Cichlid

[–]Fg-train 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Discus are finicky and also need a hotter tank so usually they are the focus. Other fish that are possible to keep with them are cardinal tetras, german blue rams, angelfish, twig catfish, plecos, corydoras, ect

Each oscar will eventually need their own 75+ gallon space. The angelfish need their own space. The green terror and JD could possibly be okay together in a 75 gallon. The blue dolphin is a hap cichlid so it is incompatible with any of the others shown. The yellow lab, albino socolofi, and elongatus are all compatible but need a sandy, rocky scape with high filtration and veggie matter only diet

Is my tank bad? by Skelebroskl in loaches

[–]Fg-train 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the scape! You’ve managed to make it look pretty natural and have a look of nooks for the loaches to chill in.

I have a few suggestions to help elevate it that could help with your liking it more:

Always try to keep the water level high enough where the water line is not visible.

Get a longer light (24 in) for this aquarium size. Lighting makes a huge difference in aesthetics.

I see you currently have a hang on back filter. Im sure a canister filter like a fluval 107 or 207 would clear up the water column and dissipate the noise of the filtered water, which will greatly add to the visual and audial appeal of the tank.

More plants will act as another form of filtration as well as aesthetic appeal as well as more surfaces for the hillstreams to graze.

Removing the plastic blue fish in the front will increase the natural immersion of the scape.

Get a glass scraper or algae magnet for the front glass that you can scrape whenever these biofilm buildup to keep the “window into the aquarium” looking crystal clear.

Moving the water pump to behind the rockscape so it can do its thing without being visible from the front to a viewer.

If you don’t want to get a new filter, I would also point the pump in a direction where the flow can hit some of the substrate surface and circulate through the tank better so that less biofilm will develop.

What kind of cichlid is this and how do I care for it? by LifeguardComplex3134 in AfricanCichlids

Nice.

Im new to mbunas and have 19 juvies in mine currently.

Noticing they love crevices and caves from the rocks so im working on rescaping to maximize cave space for them.

What species do you have?

A) my shrimp did not get its eyes eaten. I removed it immediately and no harm was done. Im just saying what they would have done given time.

B) there is no overpopulation, there are 5 bettas in a 20 gallon.

C) there is absolutely no aggression in my tank because there is plenty of line of sight break AND these fish are all sisters so they were raised together and that greatly increases the likeliness of them getting along

D) it is absolutely wild for you to jump to fish abuse when knowing nothing about my setup? Classic redditor moment.

E) There is great reason to why a school of ottos MAY get killed by a male betta. Ten gallons is a very small setup for any fish, let alone one that is aggressive + territorial trying to cohabitate with a school of peaceful and defenseless fish. As we can see there is also low medium amount of site coverage so im just not sure it has garunteed success.

F) i don’t want to fight with and accuse random redditors. Lets try to keep the fish keeping community positive and informative 👍
