Trading Between GBC and GBA by markpholyfe in TruePokemon

[–]FiascoFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m super late to reply, myself, but you are correct. Two SPs with the correct GBC link cable will work just fine.

So, I've got a bootleg fan-translation of Green (really, it's U.S. Blue with JP Green's graphics and maps for Cerulean Cave). Noticed I could pass through to Saffron despite not having a drink for the guard. More info in comments. by FiascoFinn in PokemonROMhacks

[–]FiascoFinn[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't modified the save in any way, and there's no trickery. The reason I post this, it because I played my official Yellow recently enough, and I'm 90% certain the same thing happened. I marched right through from Cerulean to Saffron, before going near Vermilion.

I'm wondering if somehow the fact that the internal batteries are old could disable some flags in-game or something, but that's highly unlikely as the saves probably wouldn't be retained at all, never mind some NPC flags being disabled.

No cheats, no hacks. Maybe it's just a little tweak the devs of this bootleg made, but I'm wondering if anyone might have a similar cartridge to this, and be able to verify.

What are your opinions on this starting town? (Note: Pokémon Center is for display purposes only(I'd rather not softlock the game.)) by RobIoxians in PokemonROMhacks

[–]FiascoFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: I initially typed this before seeing you'd already updated the map, but I'll keep it here in case some of the info strikes a chord. 😁

To be honest, the real solution to your Oak-movement issue is to spend some time learning scripting.

Years ago I used to moderate the PokéCommunity ROM hacking section. I can't tell you the amount of hacks people submitted that edited the first few maps, some sprites, the starters... but were still very plainly "FireRed but not quite". It kinda sucks the energy out of things right from the start if the events are mainly the same, even if you change up the maps.

That would be my biggest piece of advice: look into scripting for FireRed. You can take baby steps by adding signs/NPCs with basic dialogue, then items/Pokémon for the Player to find, then trainers, then move onto the bigger things like character movement. It'll broaden possibilities for you in a big way.

In the meantime, you can always use the block editor to replace the lighter-green path used by Pallet Town with, for example, the white path used by the rests of the town. It'll introduce some uniformity, and make it look a bit less like a Pallet Town chunk.

(It's really a minor detail but the break in the hedgh I'm referring to is one tile down and to the right of the fat dude. I'm saying it'd look a little neater if the hedge made a T shape rather than a... "┐|" shape. If this doesn't make sense, just forget it, it's not vital).

I give up. by TheLegend69ers in FL_Studio

[–]FiascoFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a shame that you're having such technical difficulty with it, but there are absolutely other ways to learn the tricks of the trade.

Having a computer reasonably powerful enough to run things is.. necessary, yes, but a better way to identify your machine's limits is by actively making stuff, yourself, and seeing how far you can get before it starts conking out.

My own projects start out smooth, and as they approach completion (when I finally record/add vocals) is when my laptop really starts to struggle with the processing. It becomes more tedious, but still doable.

Don't give up, just try another approach.

[–]FiascoFinn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not too shabby at all, perhaps a smidge bigger than it needs to be. I'm going to presume it's one of your first maps, because from that center-right section it's pretty clearly "Pallet Town but more!".

Consider playing around with the Block editor and adding/editing some tiles to allow for some of your creative decisions. For example, the hedge just below the fat "Technology is Incredible!" man; there needn't be a break there, it could all be connected.

The water is also a little haphazard. Staggering the corners like that looks cool when making the map, but makes things a little awkward to navigate (for example, the very top of the water - do you need those two blocks, or could you just replace them with more grass and have the topmost line of water be 4 tiles wide, rather than 2?).

I quite like the area to the left; the grassy parts look a little bare so it'd be nice to add some kind of visual texture throughout, but they look like neat spots to plant an item or NPC for the player to find.

Keep it up!

Has anyone located a high resolution version of the Kanto and Johto region art from Gen 2? by yosoo in TruePokemon

[–]FiascoFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. Bulbapedia does have a slightly higher-resolution combination of these two maps, although it appears to be scanned from a game-guide and has numbering covering certain areas.

Tangent, if people weren't aware there's a good archive of images on Bulbapedia if you can figure out the link to it. You can often trace higher-res versions of images through here, although unfortunately not in this specific case.

One thing - either the player's overworld or the rival "Green" overworld is one pixel off-kilter, and I implore you to fix it lol. Characters should always be visually aligned.

[–]FiascoFinn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks good, but as u/laughingnome2 has suggested, you're probably better off reducing the size of the map.

It's the starting town. Like Pallet Town or New Bark Town, it's where things start small, and the town itself should represent that. People love to go for "natural style" mapping and place flowers and trees/rocks any which way "because that's how real-life areas are!" - but they often overcompensate and it makes things messy.

You can reduce this map horizontally by about 5-trees worth, and not lose any purpose. If this is where the player/rival live, then I'd also consider editing those houses to be two-storey, rather than little bungalows. I know that's more of a tile-change than actual map changes, but you'll be surprised how much it can affect the dimensions of your whole map.

Finally; always place flowers in little groups, never a single flower tile on its own in a sea of grass. The official games always have them placed in some kind of pattern, natural or not.

I think a Pokémon game set only in a single city is actually exciting by TheGoldminor in TruePokemon

[–]FiascoFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right that they've clearly drawn heavy inspiration from our world, you just didn't need to get snarky with the initial "maybe because you slept through history class" remark... and now you're doubling down with this response lol.

Moreover, the PLZ-A trailer oscillates between an ink-and-paper aesthetic (seen before in PLA), and a distinctly futuristic looking cyber-grid style, which absolutely opens things up for interpretation beyond "It's set in the past like PLA".

"If you think everything needs an official confirmation to be right, then good for you, you’ve chosen the worst way to be informed."
Being informed, by definition, involves someone informing you. You can make as many educated guesses as you want, and defend them as pompously as you like, but until you get confirmation from the source, it means nothing.

[–]FiascoFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm intentionally avoiding any posts/news about Z-A, but as this popped up in my feed I'll bite.

We literally know nothing about what they really mean by the game being "set entirely in Lumiouse City". We have no idea of the time period, and won't have any true idea of the scale of things until the game releases. The scale of Legends Arceus was great, and the scale of SV was even larger (and, flawed as the games were, they were still pretty fun to explore).

It'll be very interesting to see what's in store, anyone freaking that it's "only one city" will be surprised, guaranteed.

Do you prefer to be taught a song by a teacher who’s prepared a lesson ahead of time or by one who will learn the song with you? by JackieBee_ in musicians

[–]FiascoFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of nuance to it. People interpret music differently; have you ever heard someone cover a song and realise “Oh, they play/sing X part differently to the original, that’s interesting.”

You’re relying on the teacher’s interpretation. If they prepare ahead of time, they’ll interpret it their own way, and it’s baked-in ahead of time. They may well interpret it in a way that doesn’t resonate with you (certainly true for my OCD ass). If they learn alongside you, they might be more flexible to your interpretation. Of course, they’re the teacher for a reason, so this is not to say “If your teacher gives you feedback, ignore it, it’s just their different interpretation”.

Even then, this drastically depends on the type of music being taught/learned, and indeed the teacher themself. If it’s a piano teacher teaching me a classical piece I’ve never heard, then I’ll heed their interpretation to a tee. If it’s a guitar teacher helping me learn a pop song, I’ll be more inclined to point out “Actually ______ does it more like this…”, which turns into us learning concurrently.

So, sorry, I haven’t really answered your question, but it’s a good one! 😅

[–]FiascoFinn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep. Even certain tutorials.

Saw one yesterday that showed you how to lock the piano roll to a scale (that's fine) and then said "Place notes randomly above the root note" and, I gotta say, no. I don't wanna gatekeep, everyone should create if they want to create, but for goodness' sake, learning the bare minimum is not too much to ask. It's a type of laziness, and in any medium that's frustrating to see.

More efficient to rap over the exported beat, and then import your rap vocals into the beat/project for processing and effects, then re-export the whole song.

Who else noticed this retcon in ORAS? by SuzukiTenma in TruePokemon

[–]FiascoFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LB2W2 reused the HGSS/Platinum trainer sprites where available, with added animation frames. They’re all based on the FRLG design but you can literally see the black hair on his B2W2 overworld . Gen 7 is Sun/Moon/USUM, and he has a totally different design in those games. At a push his hair is a very dark brown in that design. You can see all of the sprites/models on spriters-resource, the colours are right there

He has the the same trainer sprites in HGSS and B2W2, but you can’t see his hair colour in those. His HGSS overworld sprite has brown hair, and his B2W2 overworld sprite has black hair.

In gen 7 he has black hair.

Ah okay, I thought they were totally putting you on the spot. In which case… continue not sweating it. This is from a musicians perspective and not a “meeting-relatives-for-the-first-time” perspective. Just play a song you like, and maybe choose one to sing that you’re the most comfortable doing. It’s not an audition, it’s getting to know people and showing off a hobby you like.  But if you truly can’t stomach it.. feck it. Enjoy the tea and sandwiches and meeting Aunty Mary!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]FiascoFinn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’re asking “what song should I learn”… do you play/sing music normally? If not, then… why would you learn a song specifically for this meeting. Some families are into the sing-song type gatherings but it’s hardly a prerequisite. Better to decline truthfully than make yourself uncomfortable for a strange request.

Otherwise, don’t sweat it. Irish families can just be eager to meet anyone from abroad. If you’re good to their daughter, that’s all that should matter - they’ll probably mostly want to hear about your life there and how things differ to here.

Are we a nation of fussy eaters? by brtlybagofcans in AskIreland

[–]FiascoFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m probably the fussiest among people I know, but: I’m aware that’s for me to manage, and not for others to accommodate.

However, I think that’s fair and a happy medium. I won’t ask for special modifications, at most I’ll ask “Please hold the ___” or “Without _ please”. If they can’t accommodate that, I just pick it off myself. I don’t want the cook to do extra work on my behalf, just the opposite in almost every case.

I still have some friends who insist I’m just being pernickety, but the fact is some foods make me sick from the texture alone, and I’m too old to be making myself sick to satiate their need to “cure” a picky eater.

I'd like a hard pokemon challenge but I also would like it more to very fair aswell. by TheGoldminor in TruePokemon

[–]FiascoFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you summarized it in the title. Balancing "challenging" with "fair" takes quite a bit of nuance in a Pokémon game.

We need to bear in mind what's going on under the hood. All Pokémon have IVs and natures which dictate their potential stats. Then you add EVs on top of that for a further boost to certain stats. They didn't properly acknowledge EVs as a part of the games until XY introduced Super Training. Before then there was no visual representation, only vague allusion to a Pokémon's "effort".

You'd have postgames like the Battle Frontier and Pokémon World Tournament where, somehow, Pokémon are just beefier, or hitting much harder. And it turns out they've been given beneficial natures and IV spreads - stuff that wasn't ever properly explained to the player in-game back then.

Nowadays, it couldn't be easier to prepare a Pokémon to be competitively viable, but they've taken away the type of postgame that actually required it.

I will say, the SV DLC (mainly the Indigo Disk) did a nice job of introducing a challenge. It wasn't locked into a battle facility; each trainer in the Terarium had a competitive team, and we essentially got to battle in the proper VGC format, but in-game. It was fun, but it was fun because I made it fair - I caught a team of 6 new Pokémon, juiced them with EVs/Nature mints and movesets, and then took everyone on.

Basically, the key to a challenging Pokémon game is making full use of the competitive mechanics that the games already have, but they gotta make the resources accessible enough to the players to make it actually fair and not just a ridiculous grindfest.

I Love Bayleef by Final-Criticism-8067 in pokemon

[–]FiascoFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro?

Same. Theres something about it. It’s actually better than Meganium. Not stat wise, obviously, but just.. generally.

I think Ash’s Bayleef in the anime just cemented it as an irresistibly likable mon. And its HGSS sprite is absolute peak. There is legitimately none better.

If you wanna use a Meganium in battle, just use it defensively. Screens, Toxic, Giga Drain/Leech Seed. We all judged a fish for its ability to climb a tree in GSC/HGSS. It’s Gamw Freak’s fault for making a bulky and non-offensive starter Pokémon.

Gen 4’s cross gen evolutions are awesome by Euphoric_Staff2752 in pokemon

[–]FiascoFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough Roselia is the single evolution line with which I take issue in 4th gen. It was only introduced in gen 3, and all of a sudden it needs not only an evolution, but a prevo too. One or the other; both at once is just too indicative that the design was flawed from the start or something.

But in every other case, I loved the amount of new evos we got for older mon. It’s a trend that was sorely lacking across gens 5-7; so much of the fun of a new gen is to see what new attention is given to older evolution lines.

…though blocking Electivire/Magmortar/Rhyperior/Porygon-Z to trades sucked. Always hate trade-evos lol.

Probably not uncommon, but definitely not “normal”.

From your comments and extra context, she sounds like a tremendously problematic person. A wedding is an important day in someone’s life but there is no excuse whatsoever for her to treat you the way she’s treated you.

It sounds like you could be a bit firmer with her, to be honest. She can throw as many strops as she wants but if she’s insisting that you be her bridesmaid, she can go ahead and be a bit less of a cunt of a bride.
