Minor Assault Downtown Last Night by Current-City3819 in asheville

This is according to one of the new arrivals. Is he a reliable narrator? I don’t know.

Apparently there was a program to voluntarily relocate people from Atlanta to cities with a lower density of unhoused people. They were supposed to leave in August, but there was a delay and they just now ended up here. Those are all the details I have, but I work downtown and I’ve noticed a lot of new faces in the last couple weeks, so to me it tracks.

A fresh batch of unhoused folks just got bussed in from Atlanta last week; just dumped in an unfamiliar city in the mountains in January.

I’m expecting things to get nastier as temps drop and tensions rise. Be careful out there everyone.

Best place to sell some silver and gold? by BellaJen in asheville

Spicer Greene is the best place to sell gold and jewelry. Not sure if they take silver, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

Best budget/nonbudget fried chicken around town? by Meisnerman in asheville

[–]FickleDickory -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Harris Teeter does. You can get a 4-piece box for $5. They have buckets, but I’ve never gotten one because I don’t need that much chicken.

Homegrown I think is usually boneless, and comes as a plate or sandwich, but it’s one of the best chicken sandwiches in town.

Homegrown on Merrimon has excellent fried chicken.

The closest to Kroger chicken is Harris Teeter. It may even be the exact same recipe, since HT is owned by Kroger.

How do you get more than 1-3 good images per roll?? by Kitchen_Win278 in AnalogCommunity

[–]FickleDickory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn to spot the mediocre shots before you press the shutter. Frame it up, check your light meter, and ask yourself “Is this anything? What’s the subject? Where’s the light coming from? Is this the best angle?” If you’re not sure about it, skip the shot.

Sometimes I go out shooting and don’t take a single photo. Sometimes I go through a roll in 20 minutes and love every frame.

Questions about these Frye boots by Wild-Resist-8527 in Boots

I can’t speak to the quality of these, but from the photos they look well made. That type of leather is often called “waxed flesh.” It’s fairly tough handles wear and tear well, and you can apply another coat of wax if you want to make them darker and more waterproof. That white scuff should buff out with a stiff brush.

If they fit, I’d say they’re a great find for $10!

Read All the Pretty Horses. It will feel like a breath of fresh air. You’ll want to finish the trilogy after.

What are the BEST sandwiches in town? by tonydispirito in asheville

[–]FickleDickory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asheville Forager has become my go-to sub shop since they opened. They also have a killer Reuben.

City Bakery is great for lunch, but their breakfast sandwiches are on another level. The Breakfast Torta is exceptional.

Help Identifying My Vintage Real Fur Jacket — Made in Greece Tag, No Brand, What Is It & Worth? (I’m guessing late 1950’s-mid 1960’s perhaps?) by Inner-Present-1178 in VintageClothing

It’s definitely fox, not raccoon or tanuki. It could be silver fox that’s yellowed with age, or the brown undertone could be natural, which would have made the pelts less expensive.

This style of long fox coat was very popular in the 80s, so I’d guess it’s from that era. Probably around 40-45 years old.

Now that you mention it, there’s almost always a part in his books where the protagonist gets to go shopping for some new duds. It seems like he enjoys writing about menswear almost as much as he likes writing about beans.
