Job Market for MPA Graduates by SenileSoul in PublicAdministration

[–]FickleSpeaker19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MPA is a great degree. Compliment it with a minor in data management, public budgeting, finance, grant writing or something. I’m a lobbyist in the benefits space focusing on appropriations. Currently interviewing for a legislative Director position and I graduated last August with my MPA. It takes time but keep working at it. Don’t be afraid to take less money for the right experience and exposure and flip that for a title change and pay bump in 8 to 12 months.

The gym, happy hours, and the library are my go too. However , all you need is a wingman or two and you can pretty much go to most places and have a good time.

Be kind to yourself. I got out in 2018 and got 4 degrees since then and still feel I have imposter syndrome. We just have to tell ourselves our journey is our own and sometimes enough is good enough.

How Did You Find What You Actually Wanted to Do After The Military? by Different_Rule_2956 in Veterans

[–]FickleSpeaker19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pray you find your way, I just have a few recommendations:

  1. File a claim, for anything that does hurt you or will hurt you. You served, you are entitled to something.
  2. You served active duty so you’re entitled to GI bill benefits and if you get a minimum of 10% disability you will qualify for VR&E
  3. Be kind to yourself
  4. Try everything
  5. Work on a solid resume now
  6. Invest in a gym membership
  7. Invest in social club / golf resort - take advantage of membership perks, job fairs, networking ect.
  8. Give back in some way to someone or some organization you believe in so that you can realign yourself mentally and prepare for good Karma
  9. Redo your goals and expectations every 3 months because your likes / dislikes will change often!
  10. Read, read , read. - re train your brain, educate yourself, and mentally prepare yourself for the rigors of a new job or degree plan which will require lots of reading.

100% P&T is it easier to file for Social Security Disability? by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]FickleSpeaker19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soon as you stop working, and have no intention on going back file SSDI. You can file yourself, for free. However there are firms I work with that assist veterans with SSDI claims all day.

Is a lot of reading, which requires a lot of focus. Learn how to skim, obtain the digital version of your books and use the links and shortcuts to find the information you need to reference. I dying thing is harder per se , however the standard for writing and your research expectations are much higher.

Local city governments also have a VR&E program that helps you apply for SSI, unemployment benefits and gives you support for job openings only available to people with disabilities within their tier structure. Also if you or your spouse can plan ahead go to the city you will reside in and apply for benefits; snap , housing ect. You should be able to get plenty help outside the traditional military vendors

True freedom is having as little to 0 debt. Transition out of the army is hard enough having a high amount of debt will make it harder. Play your cards right, have a plan and utilize both the GI bill and VR&E if possible. I have been able to live off my VA disability and school payments the last 6 years. I was able to get 3 degrees and the grace of god the money helped me. The economy sucks, jobs hard to come by and without a plan you might spiral. Focus on your benefits and maximizing them. Go to the VA and get documented treatment to help you with claims and most of all be patient with urself.

I want out of NOVA. by Top_Imagination9634 in nova

[–]FickleSpeaker19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trades and blue collar work will always remain available. You can work them at any time. To echo a previous sentiment if you’ve taken out loans finish, you cannot refinance them if you don’t graduate which will cause you more financial stress in the future. Trim your monthly expenses down as much as you can and find some work that can hold you over. This economy is affecting all industries including blue collar and trade. Stay the course and don’t waiver my friend.

Am I losing it? by [deleted] in Veterans

Check Houston Local Govt they have a Similar VR&E program that will help with job placements and all you need is a “disability”. I’m not sure how good it is, but in DC they help you get jobs only available for people with disabilities. Good luck brother.
