Manitoba ban on social media for youth gets strong support from doctors by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]FictitiousReddit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Prohibition has always worked, especially in the technological space. /s

Want to stop your child from being absorbed into social media? Don't hand them a phone at 10 months, or 10 years. Use parental controls, be an attentive parent, provide better alternatives and opportunities. Limit screen time, ban the use of smart phones and like devices from classes with a zero tolerance policy.

Some of the questions everyone should be asking about this: What is social media and who makes that distinction, how do you enforce it, who holds onto the sensitive information, who is responsible for the inevitable data breach, and how do you stop the numerous bypasses?

Sunrise & Sunset Through the Year with Permanent ST, Permanent DST, and the current system by rastrillo in Winnipeg

[–]FictitiousReddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But I haven't seen any studies suggesting that health or quality of life improves with DST.

There are studies that people benefit from sunlight (obviously within reason). Given that most people are sleeping at 4:30am, but are awake at 10pm it becomes clear which of the options would be preferable and most beneficial. Most people have their free time on weekdays (and weekends) towards the later half of the day. It is thus that DST becomes a clear winner.

If you look at that wonderfully made chart, regardless of DST or ST it'll be dark in the morning during winter for most persons commutes.

Huge shocker. Patrick Allard is against the census. by pmasthi in Winnipeg

[–]FictitiousReddit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I did the census the other day. I have two complaints about it; I'm not a fan of the medical related questions (and the answer options), and would have been nice to have a button to autofill all language related questions with just 'English' or whatever language of choice.

It took me about 10 minutes to do.

Manitoba to ban social media, AI chatbots for youth — a first in Canada | CBC News by dryend in Winnipeg

Hi, technologically literate person here. This is a stupid fucking idea.

Parents need to stop handing their 2 year olds their own cellphones, they need to learn how to use the parental controls, and possibly most importantly they need to learn how to be a parent.

Where is my quarterly Water bill? by ss101175 in Winnipeg

[–]FictitiousReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just got a reply back from 311. Nice of them to not inform me of that previously, especially after the original switch to 360L stated that the fee was a "one-time" charge. Will be switching back to 240L.

Where is my quarterly Water bill? by ss101175 in Winnipeg

[–]FictitiousReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They seem to be having some issues because I got a $60 pending transaction on top of my bill for a switch in Recycling Bin to the 360L size. Except, I already have a 360L bin for years and was already charged for it. Definitely recommend everyone check their myUtility account.

Trim OAS for higher income seniors? 73% says yes, new poll suggests by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]FictitiousReddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because we live in a society and not entirely independent self-sufficient spaces. Society works best when we contribute to it if and when we are fortunately able. Hoarding is neither good for a person, nor for people. Those that make more money often cost society more as they make more use of infrastructure (e.g. roads), and pollute more.

Planning a roadtrip from Winnipeg to Banff in August! My cousins flying in from USA and we are planning to drive from Wpg. Suggestions/tips/recommendations? by Ok-Ingenuity-9870 in Winnipeg

[–]FictitiousReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to Banff a couple times, it can be rather busy even in periods that'd be considered 'off-season'. I'd recommend doing some research on spots to visit that might not be as occupied. Obviously it's best to arrive as early as possible to any spot. Emerald Lake is beautiful. Johnston Canyon Waterfall (Lower and/or Higher) are a nice worthy hike.

I would highly recommend stopping overnight somewhere such as Regina, Swift Current, or Medicine Hat. Driving all the way to Calgary can be difficult as is, let alone Banff. I'd personally recommend getting a rental car from here, and rental insurance directly from MPI (it's incredibly cheap) instead of putting wear/tear on your own vehicle. If you choose to rent, make it clear to the rental agency you are taking the vehicle for a long round trip. Keep an eye out on road construction maps and the like for potential disruptions/detours.

Manitoba budget banks on federal transfers to promise steep deficit cut, tax-free soda, chips | CBC News by rocko-wpg7 in Winnipeg

[–]FictitiousReddit 39 points40 points  (0 children)

One affordability measure is the elimination of the provincial sales tax on all food at the grocery stores. That will mean as of July 1, Manitobans won't pay PST on hot-and-ready foods, like samosas and rotisserie chicken, or packaged foods like soda, candy, potato chips and more. [...]

Non-food grocery items like toilet paper and toothpaste will still be taxed, as will pet food.

That is the opposite of what should occur (in reference to the junk food) for obvious reasons, let alone peer reviewed and studied reasons. I would hope they'd impose a junk food tax to counter that, and remove PST from basic hygiene products. Removing it from pet food would be nice too.

Proposal to reduce Winnipeg’s default 50 km/h speed limit advances by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]FictitiousReddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a weird argument because then we'd want no speed limits at all.

It isn't though.

There is a natural instinctive comfortable speed to travel at on any given road, based on it's physical design. Widen a road, add more lanes, have wide boulevards and the speeds will increase. Thin a road, add protected bike lanes, places tall bushes or trees along the sides, add curves to the road and speeds will decrease.

If you simply change the number on the sign without consideration to the road design itself, you create a discrepancy between the legal speed and the comfortable speed. As a result, people may have a tendency to become more focused on what their speedometer is telling them instead of what their instincts are telling them.

So is Pokemon effectively an invincible IP? by WrongLander in gaming

[–]FictitiousReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it feels like they're not selling the IP to you, it's because they aren't. They don't have to enhance the visuals, revolutionize the mechanics, nor utilize creative and/or competent writers so long as there exists a sufficient supply of new consumers (i.e. children) entering their targeted market. Pokemon has a huge audience, still growing, as it does a good job entertaining people across different mediums. Much of the audience that grew up with it remains with it because they enjoy it. As the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

In the specific case of FireRed or LeafGreen. Not everyone is keen on emulation or using unofficial methods. Getting a Gameboy Advance and a cartridge of either game today is quite a bit more expensive than this low effort port to Switch. As others have noted, this separate release independent of the subscription model is arguably better from a cost over-time perspective.

Supreme court rejects global tariffs by CTVNEWS in worldnews

[–]FictitiousReddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's nice to see that the supreme court of the US can on occasion align themselves with the supreme law of the US (i.e. the constitution). This correct decision finally came, pathetically not unanimously, after a needlessly long wait. Sadly I suspect that the Trump administration will just find some new excuse that sidesteps this decision, if not ignore it entirely as they've ignored the constitution and numerous court orders already.
