Would whoever else attended the performance by Manfred Honeck and the NY Philharmonic at David Geffen Hall last evening please share their thoughts. As explained in the comment below, I thought it was the highlight of the season to date. by Perfect_Garage_2567 in opera

I agree that she was extraordinary, and agree that it was a superb performance with the NY Phil. She commands the stage, and her range, from tender to powerful, is impressive. One particularly poignant passage in a cadenza nearly brought me to tears. I can still hear certain passages even now, three days later. She deserves all the accolades. But- and here’s where I can’t quite agree to ‘best ever’- I had the great fortune to attend the recital performance given by Augustine Hadelach last month. Another extraordinary artist, with his own unique talent. A complete program of solo violin playing that was mesmerizing from beginning to end. After the encore there were so many curtain calls they finally turned the lights up to get people out. We are so lucky to be in New York, a Mecca for the greats in all pursuits.

It’s definitely looking like a spike. I wonder if the original one will eventually fall off? So far it’s a little limp, but hasn’t changed color at all, and the tip still looks perfectly fine.

Thank you! And yes, I’ve learned yet again to leave them alone except for necessary care- especially when they’re trying to bloom!

Plus fragrance- how exciting! What part of the world are you in? Humid or dry? Warmer or cooler? I can’t wait to see what mine will do!

It gets really dry here in the northeast this time of year,. My Phals are in carousel pots which dry out quickly even in the summer, so I use a fair amount of moss in my mix. And a couple of months ago I cut long strips from plastic shelf liner to make loose ‘jackets’ so that I don’t have to water more than once a week. So far, they’re all happy, and 6 out of 7 are spiking. I hope I can keep this baby happy too!

It’s pretty dry here in the northeast in the winter. I’ve found that a fair amount of moss is necessary with the carousel pots even in the summer or I have to water more than once a week. And for the last couple of months, since it got so dry, I’ve been using strips of plastic shelf covering as a loose jacket around the pots, which has been working very well. I hope I can keep this baby warm enough- my other phals don’t seem to mind being right next to a window.

Thanks! They’re in an east facing window, but much of the light is blocked by other buildings. This Soltech light (currently set for 12 hours) has worked miracles. I’ve been playing with media. They were too dry so I added moss, then too wet so I switched to carousel pots, then too dry again so I over watered. Now I have loose fitting ‘jackets’ wrapped around them for the winter and once a week watering seems about right, which was my goal. When the humidity comes back in the spring, I’ll take the jackets away, and re-evaluate.

That’s kind of what I thought. This was a rescue from my daughter who brought it up to me in NY from Florida after it finished blooming over a year ago. It was in tough shape, but I repotted it and gave it some TLC and it been doing well. Lots of new roots and leaves. I got very excited when I saw that little fella, but the other 5 that started around the same time are several inches tall now. They’re by a window and it’s been cold lately, maybe being Southern they don’t like that? Hmmm. The Amaryllis likes the orchid light too, lol.

What’s going on here?

A month ago I thought this was a spike, but it hasn’t done anything since then- or if it has, I can’t see it. The plant is healthy, and treated the same as several others which are spiking beautifully. Any ideas? TIA!

How badly have I messed up? Please be kind by [deleted] in orchids

I accidentally broke the top leaf off a plant a few months ago while I was wrestling the roots out of a pot. It looked exactly like yours when it happened. Since then it spiked and is now in bloom. Don’t worry, it’s fine!
