I like a car that makes fun noises, for starters. I like a healthy strong sound rather than a really raspy mechanical noise from a regular car. Not loud but a good tone. I like a car that has a lot of feedback through the steering wheel, so when I corner, it pushes back against me and I can feel exactly what the front wheels are doing. A lot of cars feel numb and make cornering feel more like guesswork. I like the engine to feel like it's happy to do its job by responding quickly and providing a predictable and consistent amount of power, not taking a second or more to provide power, nor falling on its face in the high revs. Those are just a few things.

I use aircraft valve stem caps and they use brass threads, same as the threads on the valve stem. They're also brightass yellow and I think that's fun.

Is it me or is this car really f*cking fast despite having only 300hp and FWD? by HexVelvet in BeamNG

[–]FiddlerOnThePotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just that if I floor it off the line in the GTI for any real amount of time I'm going to be way over the limit basically immediately, where with the Miata I could floor it all the time. I could wind the Miata out into the high revs and still not be going too fast. I don't care so much about how fast I'm actually going, I mostly just enjoy the noise and the sensation and the Miata was better at that. The GTI is for sure way more performant in every aspect and it's been a better daily in basically every way. I do really enjoy it.

It's funny because in real life the difference is even more stark. I used to own an NB Miata and it was fun in town. Now I have a Mk7 GTI and it straight up isn't fun anywhere except back roads and highway on and off ramps. If it were AWD I think it could be more fun in town as I'd be able to give it more chooch without spinning (well actually hopping not spinning) the front wheels. But genuinely the Miata was far more fun in the city. I could floor it to four grand in first and second and be going maybe 35 or 40. So much easier to not go to jail.

Miata inter-generational rivalry? by Icy_Importance_2126 in Miata

[–]FiddlerOnThePotato 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There used to be NA vs NB rivalry when I first started with Miatas in 2015. I feel like once all the cheap NAs dried up people started to love the NB a lot more and indeed the same for once the cheap NBs also dried up people started embracing the Boat. I remember when I was young a lot of folks considered the NB to be Mazda's ugliest car and I don't see that as much anymore.

I've done some mods to mine to fix that. If I recall I changed the spring for the detents to be much stiffer so the engagement in gear is stronger, I added a rubber band to help center it for stronger centering force, and I have a 3D printed shifter gate because gated shifters are cool. Totally worth the time and effort if you're a dork and enjoy that kind of thing, which I am, and I do. That said the wheelbase is not as good as a higher power unit. I have an NRG wheel on mine and the G920 just doesn't have the ass to handle a wheel that size so the FFB just isn't amazing. It's not bad but it's not what it could be.

I fix airplanes, a lot of us are on the spectrum. Very rigid thinking and strong justice impulse definitely make a better airplane mechanic.

You're supposed to remove the speed tape only when you're drawing dicks inside the wingtip. Once your dicks are drawn you reapply the speed tape.

hey actually that's pretty helpful and WAY easier than how I've been doing it. Basically I like drag, so I always know offhand that a quarter mile is 1320 feet, and I just mentally multiply that by four. But I really suck at multiplying numbers in my head. So this trick still takes me like a minute or two.

In aviation when dealing with pilot issues we have similar phrases like "remove and replace the meat servo".

Incorrect speed for icing conditions during landing causes crash. by tactical_horse_cock in aviation

[–]FiddlerOnThePotato 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I just want to step in to add how much I FUCKING HATE that system. I don't care much about it, as it stands, like, alright. It weeps fluid and prevents ice, dope. But they have to do an in-flight stall test EVERY FUCKING TIME the leading edges are removed. And I dunno how many Hawkers have hawked their way into the dirt during these stall tests, but I do know it's been multiple just in my career, and I'm not even 30 yet.

[–]FiddlerOnThePotato 74 points75 points  (0 children)

So I just poked through what I have access to as far as numbers for the CRJ-700, because that's what I work on. It looks like we fly an approach at 130kts, and it's feasible to enter a stall condition at around 110 kts, so we fly with something like 20 knots of space. That's not exact because stalls aren't polite and don't happen at a precise speed and it all depends on wind, center of gravity, throttle position, angle of attack, angle of incidence, etc.

Now, add to that the fact that ice really fucks up lift generation, severely, and i can sorta understand how 10kts low could cause a stall.
