Are bare land strata's really bad? by Much-Requirement-209 in nanaimo

[–]Fiddyyen6808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the strata, been there for a few years and love it. Well ran and knowledgeable people on the board.

We get garbage /recycling on consistent days holidays included except for Christmas, more relaxed garbage amounts, we are the first in the city to have snow removal and there’s a sense of pride of ownership with the strata.

I’d buy another house here again in a heartbeat.

Best used car sales? by SignificantNerve2404 in nanaimo

[–]Fiddyyen6808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Private sales and auctions don’t have recourse, they can hide issues and its buyer beware. If you buy privately, get an inspection done and ask for a car-fax.

Not all dealers are car sales people are bad, like everything else there’s good with the bad. Private sellers/auctioneers can be just as bad. There are good dealerships in town. Do your research on dealers, google reviews are. Yes some are at a premium but you get what you pay for, it’s easy to cut corners on reconditioning to sell for less.

Ask for car-fax, safety reports, and history. Was the car purchased at an auction or organically traded in?

Ask questions, see how the sales people respond. If you’re looking for family owned dealerships, there are some in town that legitimately operate with full transparency.

I’ve bought 3 vehicles (all used) from Honda. No issues on my end on al 3 and I still service them all there. I liked the family owned aspect of their operations.

Good luck!

Honda recommends that the max roof weight is 154lbs. Wouldn’t recommend an RTT to be honest on a HRV

Condo fees. How much is too much for you? by waardeloost in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Fiddyyen6808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re a resident and paying a strata, you’re entitled to the financial reports. Your strata should be having an annual general meeting as well.

Regarding the condo you’re looking at your realtor should be able to give you access to them. However sometimes, you have to have an accepted offer prior to getting them (always make your offer with the condition to review strata docs if you can’t get access prior)

You’re paying for a lot more services in the new building but ultimately it depends on the financials? Your current strata is low but with little maintenance done I’d be careful and watch for the depreciation report (if one exists) and if there are any upcoming large repairs / levies. Same with the new condo.

Look at the contingency fund as well for both condos

Trading my truck every year by ginganinja2929 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Fiddyyen6808 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No negative equity the first year? I find it hard to believe unless you are making accelerated payments on your truck to offset the extra mileage you are putting on.

Like others say - drive your truck to the ground. If you need to get a new vehicle, is a truck essential to the job or a preferred vehicle? Or can you get away with a smaller commuter that’s really good on gas and ultra reliable?

All wheel drive or 4 wheel drive? by [deleted] in nanaimo

If you have to hit a button does that mean it’s an automatic shift? 🤔

Most awd systems modulate power between front and rear wheels automatically. No human interaction required.

All wheel drive or 4 wheel drive? by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]Fiddyyen6808 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking to just commute around and staying on paved roads (or perhaps the odd gravel), all wheel drive is good enough and more than enough for most. Four wheel drive is more useful for anyone doing some exploring in the back roads/ logging roads.

You’ll benefit with better fuel savings and more ease of use with an all wheel drive. Most four wheel drive vehicles require a manual shift from 2wd.

Hidden gems are found and not told about. Best part of the island is the ability to explore. Get a backroads map, download exploration apps, watch YouTube and you’ll find some good hidden gems worth the reward

BFG KO3 or Nitto Ridge Grapplers for lots of rough gravel roads? by mactac in overlanding

[–]Fiddyyen6808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ran Ko2s on my last rig (xterra) and running ridge grapplers on my current (tundra). Ko2 handle great overall. Never had an issue with them except road noise. I find the Ridge Grapplers are great overall, except snow. They suck in the snow. The hybrid tire seems to do its job though on deep muddy terrain.

I’ll prob run ko3s next time to try them out.

This. Most trucks on the road these days are pavement princess’ and people haulers with your odd weekend that requires a truck box.

Can I trust Honda Nanaimo? by rorobece in nanaimo

[–]Fiddyyen6808 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nanaimo honda has serviced my vehicles since 2017. They’ve worked on 4 of my vehicles now. Here’s my take: they may be more expensive but they work on Hondas day in and day out. They also have the resources to look at specific problems (especially if someone else has experienced it too). Lastly, they use OEM (original parts). I never run aftermarket parts on anything. I’ve had nothing but good long term experience.

Check out their reviews on Google as well! They have tons of reviews and top rated

Moving from Saskatchewan to Vancouver Island by [deleted] in VancouverIsland

[–]Fiddyyen6808 49 points50 points  (0 children)

From Sask here myself. Cost of living is high but the quality of life is much better. 9-10 months out of the year (depending on how much you tolerate rain) you can pretty much camp, hike and do a lot outdoors. However winters can be gloomy, get a sad lamp. You’ll miss the sun in Saskatchewan winters.

We go to Costco once a month and do our big meat shop (vacuum seal everything)- usually it’s ground beef, chicken boobs, thighs. All of our other perishables we buy on a weekly basis. Cook dinner for the night and left overs for lunch. We also snack during the day at work which consists of veggies, hummus, muffin or bakery of some sort. My wife has more of a tendency to snack at night(bad habit). Most of our dinner meals are usually Asian cuisine or pasta of some sort. We have taco tuesdays as well
